Acoustic Ladyland was a London-based jazz-punk band consisting of Pete Wareham on vocals and saxophone, Seb Rochford on drums, Chris Sharkey on guitar, and Ruth Goller on bass guitar.

Tom Herbert of The Invisible played bass on their first three albums. They are part of the F-IRE Collective. Some of the members are now part of electronic jazz group Melt Yourself Down, whose debut album came out in 2013.

History

Acoustic Ladyland formed in 2001 and released their first album Camouflage , an acoustic album inspired by Jimi Hendrix songs, in 2004. [1] Their second album, Last Chance Disco, an electric set of self-penned compositions, was released in 2005, [1] and was the Jazzwise album of the year. [2]

On 13 September 2010 Pete Wareham announced that the band "as we know it will be no more" after a series of farewell gigs in December 2010. [3] The band were chosen by Portishead to perform their last ever show at the ATP I'll Be Your Mirror festival that they curated in July 2011 at London's Alexandra Palace. [4] Before beginning their performance, Wareham announced that after the farewell gig the band would be known as Silver Birch.

Awards and honors

Acoustic Ladyland won the BBC Jazz Award for Best Band 2005. [5] Their third album Skinny Grin was released on V2 Records in November 2006. [6]

Roller Trio are a British jazz-rock trio, who formed whilst studying at Leeds College of Music in 2011. In 2012, their eponymous debut studio album was nominated for the Mercury Prize alongside a nomination for the band as "Best Jazz Act" at the MOBO Awards that year. In performance, John Fordham of The Guardian described their preview gig for the Mercury prize [as having] "the same wild insouciance that has made their sound a howl of fresh air." DJ and broadcaster Gilles Peterson described their music as "Dark, menacing, bass heavy – the new sound of UK jazzzzzzz!" They are known for their "epic memorably singalong melody hooks and blistering riffs".

Melt Yourself Down are a London-based band who incorporate elements of West African musical styles (afrobeat), punk, jazz and funk. Founded in January 2012, the band is led by saxophonist Pete Wareham, former leader of now defunct jazz/punk band Acoustic Ladyland and saxophonist in British jazz band Polar Bear. The original line-up included saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings, drummer Tom Skinner, vocalist Kushal Gaya, bassist Ruth Goller and percussionist Satin Singh.

Bex Burch's Vula Viel is a jazz group from London, playing music based on the sound of the gyil, a wooden xylophone from West Africa, fused with elements of electronica and minimal music. The group was formed by Bex Burch, a musician from Yorkshire. Burch trained in percussion at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she was introduced to the minimalist music of Steve Reich, and then spent three years with the Dagaaba people of the Upper West Region of Ghana. There she learned music and xylophone making as the apprentice of a master xylophonist Thomas Sekgura before returning to the United Kingdom and forming Vula Viel. The name Vula Viel was given to Burch on the completion of her apprenticeship, and means "Good is Good" in the Dagaaba language, Dagaare.

WorldService Project is a British band founded and led by keyboard player, vocalist and composer Dave Morecroft. The group plays a combination of jazz, rock, punk and experimental styles and has toured extensively across Europe, Asia and America since its formation in 2009.
