The Addis Ababa City Corridor Project, also known as Smart City Project, [1] is an ongoing urban planning project in the city of Addis Ababa initiated by the Addis Ababa City Administration in December 2022 to upgrade key routes and improve connectivity among the corridors. Due in 2025, the project aims to expand metropolis that incorporates the construction of bicycle routes, spacious pedestrian walkways, better roads, parks, libraries, and additional housing.

The Addis Ababa City Roads Authority awarded three million birr contract to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation and the World Bank, the latter previously contracted since 2016. [2] The Corridor project has been controversial due to relation with the current house demolition in Addis Ababa. [3]

Overview

The Addis Ababa City Corridor Project was launched by the Addis Ababa City Administration on 29 December 2022 to upgrade key routes and improve connectivity among the corridors. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials like Mayor of Addis Ababa Adanech Abebe. [4] Targeted places and routes were from Mexico to Sar Bet and Wollo Sefer. [5] [6] It was expected to be completed in 2025. [7] The project aims to expand metropolis that includes projects for the construction of bicycle routes, spacious pedestrian walkways, better roads, parks, libraries, and additional housing. To improve quality of life, drainage systems would fully developed, upgrading utility networks such as power and internet. During a meeting with project leaders on 27 March 2024, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed highlighted the necessity of project with the goal of transforming Addis Ababa to "hospitable and livable metropolis" for its citizens, He acknowledges the potential effect on government-owned or leased properties, low-income communities, and the private sector during the project phase and stakeholders would benefitted from the involvement. The City Administration prepared land plot auction amidst the project, primarily in Piassa. [11] The corridor project often has been related to widespread house demolition in the city. [3] In May 2022, the corridor project launched Chaka Project, aiming toward the renewal of forest in Yeka sub-city and added scenery of artificial lakes, resorts and residencies. Its operation maintained by a contractor named E-tollo with 500 billion birr. [12]

She is the first woman to hold the mayorship since it was created in 1910.

The Ethiopia Museum of Art and Science is a 15,000 m2 (160,000 sq ft) lying science museum in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed along with other high-ranking officials on 4 October 2022. Part of Chinese aided Addis Ababa Riverside Development Project Phase II, the museum contains exhibition hall dedicated to scientific and developmental research. The museum lies on 6.78 hectares with 9-metre (30 ft) circular shape dubbed "ring of wisdom" to denote "human ability and skillfulness to create objects". In addition, the second room is dedicated to a three-dimensional theatre movie called Dome Theatre. The museum also contains several building complexes and interactive display screens, cybersecurity, finance, geographical information system (GIS), service industries, data analysis, manufacturing, and robotics.

Many buildings have been demolished by the government of Ethiopia under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed since early 2019, with 12,000 homes planned to be demolished for the purpose of rebuilding urban sprawl. The project was targeted toward Addis Ababa and Oromia, in the towns of Sebeta, Buraryu, Lagatafo Lagadadi, Sululta, Ermojo, and Gelan. Residents have criticized the government demolition, claiming they paid taxes to the government properties, and the government is illegally taking undue advantage to confiscate for the Oromia government.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Political repression under Abiy Ahmed</span>

Political repression is a visible scenario under the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed after 2018, characterized by severe human rights violation, restriction of press, speeches, dissents, activism and journalism that are critical to his government. Similar to TPLF-led EPRDF regime, there was a raise of censorship in the country, particularly internet shutdowns under the context of anti-terror legislation labelling them "disinformation and war narratives" since the raise of armed conflict in Ethiopia. In June 2018, Abiy unblocked 64 internet access that include blogs and news outlets.

The project encompasses the construction of National Palace, residencies, resorts, artificial lake and renovation of forest in Yeka sub-city of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Adwa 00KM Museum is a public historical museum located in Piasa, Arada district, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Inaugurated on 11 February 2024, the museum is dedicated to the Battle of Adwa, the battle of the First Italo-Ethiopian War where Italian forces defeated by the Ethiopian Army in 1896. Part of Adwa Zero KM Project, the museum lies on 1.5 hectares of land.

Gorgora Project is a national project initiated by the Ethiopian government "Dine for Nation" initiatives under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on 20 August 2020. The project took place in Gorgora town in Amhara Region with 4.2 billion birr expenditure along with sister projects in Wenchi and Koysha.

The A3 Road is a national route in Ethiopia. The primary highway spans around 762 kilometers from Addis Ababa, the capital, to Gondar in the northwest region of the country. The road links the central highlands of Ethiopia to its northwestern parts and is essential for transporting people, goods, and services.

The A4 Road is a national route in Ethiopia. It runs from Addis Ababa, the central city of Ethiopia, to Gedi Adis located in the west is roughly 444 kilometers long and stretches from east to west. The route links the central Ethiopian highlands to its western region thereby enabling people, goods and services movement.

Desalagne Chanie is an Ethiopian politician who is currently MP in the House of Peoples' Representatives (HoPR) since 2021. He was the founder of the Amhara nationalist party, the National Movement of Amhara (NaMA) in 2018 along with Belete Molla. He has served as a chairman until 2020.
