The Addis Ababa City Corridor Project, also known as Smart City Project, [1] is an ongoing urban planning project in the city of Addis Ababa initiated by the Addis Ababa City Administration in December 2022 to upgrade key routes and improve connectivity among the corridors. Due in 2025, the project aims to expand metropolis that incorporates the construction of bicycle routes, spacious pedestrian walkways, better roads, parks, libraries, and additional housing.

The Addis Ababa City Roads Authority awarded three million birr contract to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation and the World Bank, the latter previously contracted since 2016. [2] The Corridor project has been controversial due to relation with the current major house demolition in Addis Ababa particularly in old parts of the town. [3] Opponents of the project also claim that the economic or societal benefits are not clear and there is a major mis-prioritization considering other critical macroeconomic, societal, political and ideological issues the country is facing.

Overview

The Addis Ababa City Corridor Project was launched by the Addis Ababa City Administration on 29 December 2022 to upgrade key routes and improve connectivity among the corridors. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials like Mayor of Addis Ababa Adanech Abebe. [4] Targeted places and routes were from Mexico to Sar Bet and Wollo Sefer. [5] [6] It was expected to be completed in 2025. [7] The project aims to expand metropolis that includes projects for the construction of bicycle routes, spacious pedestrian walkways, better roads, parks, libraries, and additional housing. To improve quality of life, drainage systems would fully developed, upgrading utility networks such as power and internet. During a meeting with project leaders on 27 March 2024, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed highlighted the necessity of project with the goal of transforming Addis Ababa to "hospitable and livable metropolis" for its citizens, He acknowledges the potential effect on government-owned or leased properties, low-income communities, and the private sector during the project phase and stakeholders would benefitted from the involvement. The City Administration prepared land plot auction amidst the project, primarily in Piassa. [11] The corridor project often has been related to widespread house demolition in the city. [3] In May 2022, the corridor project launched Chaka Project, aiming toward the renewal of forest in Yeka sub-city and added scenery of artificial lakes, resorts and residencies. Its operation maintained by a contractor named E-tollo with 500 billion birr. [12]

Second phase

Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abebe announced that the second phase of corridor development project works is set to be launched in October 2024 in various areas of the Ethiopian capital, after the success of the first phase of the corridor and redevelopment project. [13] It spans 132 kilometers from Kazanchis to Estinfanos Corridor. [14]

Corridors

This phase includes eight corridors with different length and focus: [15] [16]

  • Kasanchis-Estifanos-Meskel Square-Mexico-Churchill-Arat Kilo: 40.4 km long, this corridor connects major transportation hubs and commercial centers
  • Chaka Project (South Gate)–Megenagna–Haya Hulet– Meskel Square: 7.1 km long, this corridor connects Southgate with Haya Hulet
  • CMC-Summit-Goro-Bole VIP Terminal Corridor and Addis International Convention and Exhibition Center Corridor: 10.8 km long, this corridor includes the VIP terminal at Bole Airport
  • Anbessa Garage-Jacros Area-Goro: 3.1 km long
  • Arat Kilo-Shiro Meda-Entoto Maryam-Gulele Botanical Garden: 13.19 km long
  • Kebena Riverside Development Corridor: 20 km long
  • Entoto-Peacock River Corridor: 21.5 km long

Adanech Abebe is an Ethiopian politician who is serving as the thirty-second mayor of Addis Ababa since 2021. She has been serving as a deputy mayor from 2020 until 2021. She previously was the Minister of Revenue and Customs Authority from 2018 to 2020, when she became the first female to assume the role of the Federal Attorney General of Ethiopia. She is the first woman to hold the mayorship since it was created in 1910.

Yonatan Aklilu Anjulo is an Ethiopian Pentecostal pastor. He is known for his project called Melkam Wetat/Excellent Youth. On 6 September 2020, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed offered Yonatan an award of 25,000 euros for his contribution to the youth of Ethiopia through the Hessian Peace Prize in 2019.

Filsan Abdullahi Ahmed, also called Filsan Abdi, is an Ethiopian activist and politician from the Somali Region. She is a founder of the Nabad project, a satellite television station for promoting communication and peace in Somali Region and between the Somali and Oromo communities.

Democratic backsliding in Ethiopia is ongoing, most notably under the administration of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Since assumption of power in April 2018, Ahmed has played crucial role of reforms in the Ethiopian politics and reversal of policies implemented by the former ruling party, the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF). Abiy immediately gained public approval and international recognition owing to liberalized policymaking including in media outlets, gender equality, internet freedom and privatization of economy. Furtherly, he was also warmly gained accolades for ending 20-years conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea, from which he awarded the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize, being the first Ethiopian to earn the title. In 2019, Ethiopia received a score of 19 out of 100 in the Freedom in the World metric, a significant improvement from previous years, although it is still characterized as "Not Free". In December 2019, he formed the Prosperity Party by dissolution of EPRDF and merged all its ethnic based regional parties while the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) refused to obey, resulting intense face-off with the federal government. He promised to hold free and fair upcoming election; although due to COVID-19 pandemic deterioration and other security and logistics issues, the election was postponed indefinitely in mid-2020. Opponents called this action as backdrop to "reconsolidate dictatorship" and "constitutional crisis". On 9 September 2020, the Tigray Regional election were held as the federal government deemed illegal election. According to the electoral commission, the TPLF won 98.2% of 152 seats were contested. The federal government and the Tigray authority relations aggravated by late 2020, culminating the Tigray War.

The Ethiopia Museum of Art and Science is a 15,000 m2 (160,000 sq ft) lying science museum in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed along with other high-ranking officials on 4 October 2022. Part of Chinese aided Addis Ababa Riverside Development Project Phase II, the museum contains exhibition hall dedicated to scientific and developmental research. The museum lies on 6.78 hectares with 9-metre (30 ft) circular shape dubbed "ring of wisdom" to denote "human ability and skillfulness to create objects". In addition, the second room is dedicated to a three-dimensional theatre movie called Dome Theatre. The museum also contains several building complexes and interactive display screens, cybersecurity, finance, geographical information system (GIS), service industries, data analysis, manufacturing, and robotics.

Many buildings have been demolished by the government of Ethiopia under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed since early 2019, with 12,000 homes planned to be demolished for the purpose of rebuilding urban sprawl. The project was targeted toward Addis Ababa and Oromia, in the towns of Sebeta, Buraryu, Lagatafo Lagadadi, Sululta, Ermojo, and Gelan. Residents have criticized the government demolition, claiming they paid taxes to the government properties, and the government is illegally taking undue advantage to confiscate for the Oromia government.

Menelik II Referral Hospital is a public health care hospital in Addis Ababa, and is one of the oldest hospitals in Ethiopia. Named after Emperor Menelik II, it was established in 1909, serving as a tertiary care hospital that provides with specialized services in the country. It is located near Jan Meda on Russia St.

Adwa Zero KM Project, also called Adwa 00KM Project, is a megaproject in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, started in 2019. Named after the Ethiopian victory at the battle of Adwa in 1896, the project hosts a multipurpose facility, including a meeting hall, amphitheater, libraries, and youth centers. The Chinese firm Jiangsu was awarded a bid for construction with 45,000 square kilometers of land in the place of Piassa. On 10 February 2024, the project was completed.

Chaka Project is an ongoing urban planning project and part of Addis Ababa City Corridor Project, known as Smart City Project launched on 21 May 2022. The project encompasses the construction of National Palace, residencies, resorts, artificial lake and renovation of forest in Yeka sub-city of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Adwa 00KM Museum is a public historical museum located in Piasa, Arada district, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Inaugurated on 11 February 2024, the museum is dedicated to the Battle of Adwa, the battle of the First Italo-Ethiopian War where Italian forces defeated by the Ethiopian Army in 1896. Part of Adwa Zero KM Project, the museum lies on 1.5 hectares of land.

Jantirar Abay is an Ethiopian politician who is the deputy mayor of Addis Ababa since 2020. He was the Minister of Urban Development and Housing from 2018 to 2019. On 26 April 2019, he was appointed as advisor to the Prime Minister on Infrastructure & Urban Development. On 18 April 2019, Jantirar was replaced by Aisha Mohammed as minister of Urban Development and Construction.

Desalagne Chanie is an Ethiopian politician who is currently MP in the House of Peoples' Representatives (HoPR) since 2021. He was the founder of the Amhara nationalist party, the National Movement of Amhara (NaMA) in 2018 along with Belete Molla. He has served as a chairman until 2020.

Taye Dendea is an Ethiopian politician and activist. Taye has been subjected to arbitrary detention multiple times. During Abiy Ahmed premiership, he was appointed as State Minister of Peace from 2021 to 2023.
