Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo III (born 14 September 1943) is the current Alake of Egba,a clan in Abeokuta,Nigeria. He has ruled since 2 August 2005.
Gbadebo was born on 14 September 1943,into the Laarun Ruling House. He is a grandson of the sixth Alake of Egbaland,Oba Gbadebo,who ruled from 1898 to 1920,and is a nephew of Oba Gbadebo II. [1] His great grandfather was Okukenu,the first Alake of Egbaland. Through Okukenu,Gbadebo's lineage traces back to Laarun,an Alake of Ake who ruled in the early 1700s. Laarun is Gbadebo's 5x-great-grandfather.
Gbadebo attended the Baptist Boys' High School in Abeokuta and Ibadan Grammar School,then went on to University of Ibadan in 1965,obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969. [2] He joined the army in 1969,and attended the Command and Staff College,Jaji from September 1978 to August 1979. He eventually became a Principal Staff Officer to Major-General Tunde Idiagbon,the Chief of Staff at the Supreme Headquarters,Dodan Barracks,from January 1984 to September 1985. He retired from the army as a Colonel. [3]
Gbadebo's election as Alake in August 2005 ended a six-month period of uncertainty about who would succeed the former Alake,Oba Oyebade Lipede,who died on 3 February 2005. [4] He scored 15 out of 23 votes in an election conducted by the Egba kingmakers,defeating eight competitors including his younger brother,Adeleke. [5]
In April 2010,a dispute between Gbadebo and the Olu of Igbein,Oba Festus Oluwole Makinde,was taken to the High Court of Ogun State,Abeokuta Judicial Division,Ogun State,Nigeria. The Olu of Igbein was contesting an attempt by the Alake to change his title from Olu of Igbein to Olu of Mowe,a change which would affect his rights to use certain traditional symbols including the Igbein stool. The Ẹgbado,now Yewa,are a subgroup of the Yoruba people and mostly inhabit the eastern area of Ogun West Senatorial District,Ogun State,in south-west Nigeria,Africa. In 1995,the group's name was changed to Yewa after the Yewa River,the river (odo) they foraged towards. The name of this river is derived from the Yoruba goddess Yewa. Yewa/Ẹgbado mainly occupy four Local Government Areas in Ogun State,Yewa South,Yewa North,Imeko-Afon,and Ipokia,while the Ado-Odo/Ota LGA forms the fifth Awori part of the senatorial district. Other Yewa/Ẹgbado are located in Lagos West,Lagos East,Oyo North,and Oyo South senatorial zones.
The Egba people are a subgroup of the Yoruba people,an ethnic group of western Nigeria,a majority of whom are from the central part of Ogun State,that is Ogun Central Senatorial District.
Chief Esther Bisoye Tejuoso was a Nigerian businesswoman from Abeokuta. She was born into the family of an Egba farmer who was also a chief in Abeokuta. She herself held the chieftaincy of the Iyalode,a fact which made her very prominent in Egba affairs.

Oba Sir Ladapo Samuel Ademola KBE,CMG (1872–1962),also known as Ademola II,was the Alake of Abeokuta from 1920 to 1962. Before he was crowned Alake,Ademola was involved in the affairs of the Egba United Government. As a member of the Egba council,he was a leading participant in negotiations with the Lagos State colonial government in 1889 for the rights to construct railway tracks passing through Egbaland. In 1904 he travelled with Alake Gbadebo to the U.K.,where they were received by King Edward VII. He succeeded Oba Gbadebo in 1920 with overwhelming votes from the Egba council.
