The Adelaide Jazz Festival (AJF) is a city-wide musical event held in Adelaide, South Australia. It was first held in April 2023, and a second event was held in April 2024.

Contents

History

Founded and produced in 2023 by Kaya Blum, the festival received state government funding for the inaugural event and partnered with Adelaide Festival Centre. [1]

The first edition of the festival hosted 12 bands in a series of venues across the city over three days from 28 to 30 April 2023. It culminated in the UNESCO International Jazz Day concert at the Adelaide Festival Centre. [2] [3] The program covered a wide range of jazz styles and genres, with a focus on Australian artists and local bands from Adelaide. [4]

The participating artists in 2023 were: Bend, The 6 ft Pelicans, Soylent Green, Penny Eames Band, Lucky Seven, Women in Jazz Adelaide, Er@ser Description, Kara Manansala, Django Rowe Quartet, DJ Oisima, DJ Troy J Been, and DJ Mike Gurrieri. [5]

While jazz is the core focus, the festival also includes music from genres such as such as blues, rock and indie.

The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (ASO) is a South Australian orchestra based in Adelaide, established in 1936. The orchestra's primary performance venue is the Adelaide Town Hall, but the ASO also performs in other venues. It provides the orchestral support for all productions of the State Opera of South Australia and all Adelaide performances of the Australian Ballet. It also features regularly at the Adelaide Festival, and has performed at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, WOMAdelaide and several other festivals in Adelaide.

The Elder Conservatorium of Music, also known as "The Con", is Australia's senior academy of music and is located in the centre of Adelaide, the capital of South Australia. It is named in honour of its benefactor, Sir Thomas Elder (1818–1897). Dating in its earliest form from 1883, it has a history in professional training for musical performance, musical composition, research in all fields of music, and music education. The Elder Conservatorium of Music and its forerunners have been parts of the University of Adelaide since the early 1880s. The current Director is Professor Anna Goldsworthy.


The Chicago Jazz Festival is an admission-free, four-day annual jazz festival in Chicago's Millennium Park. It is run by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and programmed with the assistance of Jazz Institute of Chicago during Labor Day weekend, integrating international and local artists playing many forms of jazz music.

The South Australian Music Awards, also known as SA Music Awards, commonly SAM Awards, formerly Fowler's Live Music Awards (FLMA), are annual awards that exist to recognise, promote and celebrate excellence in the South Australian contemporary music industry. They take place in Adelaide, South Australia every November. The venue has varied over the years.

The Perth International Jazz Festival (PIJF) is an annual jazz festival event held over three days in early November. This jazz festival incorporates both ticketed and free community events. Its location over the festival weekend spans across the CBD of Perth, the cultural precinct area of Northbridge, through to Hyde Park in the City of Vincent.
