Adolfo Mella is a Canadian former soccer player who played in the USL A-League, Canadian Professional Soccer League, and the National Professional Soccer League.

Playing career

Mella played a match with the Toronto Blizzard in 1991. [1] Mella played with Richmond Hill Kick in 1992 in the National Soccer League. [2] He signed with Toronto Supra for the 1996 season. [3] During the 1996 season he was selected for the CNSL All-Star team against Toronto Italia which featured Diego Maradona. [4] In 1997, he helped Supra reach the playoffs where he scored two goals for Toronto in their 8-1 victory on goals on aggravate over Toronto Croatia. [5] [6] In finals the club faced St. Catharines Wolves, where in the final match Mella scored a goal but Supra failed to bounce back from a 4-3 defeat. [7]

During the 1996 winter season he featured in the National Professional Soccer League with the Toronto Shooting Stars, where he holds the franchise's all-time goalscorer record with 37 goals. [8] In 1997, he had a tenure with Montreal Impact during their 1997-1998 winter indoor season appearing in 26 matches and recording 21 goals. Mella signed with Toronto Lynx of the USL A-League in 1998. He made his debut for the club on July 19, 1998 in a match against Rochester Rhinos. [9] He scored his first for the organization on August 23, 1998 against his former club Montreal Impact in a 2-1 victory. [10]

In the 1998-1999 winter season he signed with Milwaukee Wave, and in 2000 he signed with expansion franchise Toronto ThunderHawks. [11] The following year Mella signed with the Brampton Hitmen in the Canadian Professional Soccer League. [12] [13] During his term with Brampton he won the CPSL Championship after defeating Vaughan Sun Devils in the playoff finals by a score of 1-0. [14] In 2006, Mella returned to his former club the Toronto Supra Portuguese for the 2006 CSL season. He made his debut for the organization in a friendly match S.C. Braga. [15] He helped Supra finish fourth in the International Division and secured a postseason berth. He featured in the quarterfinal match against the Serbian White Eagles FC, but were eliminated from the competition by a score of 3-0. [16] He had a stint with Toronto Croatia for the 2007 CSL season. [17] During his tenure with Toronto he won the Croatian World Club Championship, and concluded his career with the Brampton Lions in 2009. [18]

International career

Mella played for the Canada national futsal team, where he made six appearances and recorded one goal. [19] He made his debut for Canada on May 31, 2008 against Ukraine national futsal team. [20] He was selected to represent the Canada in the 2008 Grand Prix de Futsal. [21]

SC Toronto was a Canadian soccer team, founded in 1994. The team was a member of the Canadian Soccer League, and played its final home games at Lamport Stadium in the city of Toronto, Ontario. The club found success early on since its inception as the Toronto Supra in the Canadian National Soccer League, making the postseason in 1996, and the championship finals in 1997. With the creation of the Canadian Professional Soccer League in 1998, Toronto missed out in registering for the league which resulted in the club completing in local amateur leagues. Supra would eventually return to the professional level in 2001, entering the CPSL as an expansion franchise.

The 2006 Canadian Soccer League season was the 9th season for the Canadian Soccer League. The season began on May 19, 2006, and concluded on October 15, 2006, with Italia Shooters defeating Serbian White Eagles, 1–0, at Esther Shiner Stadium to win their first CSL Championship. In the regular season Serbia clinched the International Division, and Oakville Blue Devils secured their first National Division title. The league was re-branded as the Canadian Soccer League, and renamed their two existing conferences into the International and National division. The changes brought about an increase in sponsorship, media coverage, and a 50% increase in attendance. The CSL also received greater autonomy from the Ontario Soccer Association. The league struck an agreement with the Toronto Community News which provided coverage for the league and its member clubs through their nine community newspapers.

The 2005 Canadian Professional Soccer League season was the 8th season for the Canadian Professional Soccer League. The season began on May 21, 2005 and concluded on October 10, 2005 with Oakville Blue Devils defeating Vaughan Shooters 2-1 to win their first CPSL Championship. The final was played at Esther Shiner Stadium, which gave North York Astros a playoff wildcard match. In the regular season the Vaughan Shooters won their first Eastern Conference title, while Hamilton Thunder secured their third Western Conference title. The league increased in membership with the return of the Laval Dynamites. For the first time in the league's history the CPSL introduced a Women's Canada Cup tournament, which included 6 district all-star teams from the existing men's soccer districts.

The 2004 Canadian Professional Soccer League season was the seventh season for the Canadian Professional Soccer League. The season began on May 24, 2004 and concluded on October 11, 2004 with Toronto Croatia defeating Vaughan Shooters 4–0 to capture their second CPSL Championship. The championship was hosted for the first time at Victoria Park Stadium in Brampton, Ontario, which granted the Brampton Hitmen a wildcard berth. In the regular season the Toronto Supra clinched their first Eastern Conference title, while Hamilton Thunder secured their second Western Conference title. Though the league decreased in membership they managed to expand to the Windsor - Detroit territory with the addition of the Windsor Border Stars.

The 2003 Canadian Professional Soccer League season was the sixth season for the Canadian Professional Soccer League. The season began on May 24, 2003 and concluded on October 5, 2003 with the Brampton Hitmen defeating Vaughan Sun Devils 1-0 to capture the CPSL Championship. The victory marked Brampton's first championship title, and the final was played at Cove Road Stadium in London, Ontario. During the regular season the Ottawa Wizards and the Hamilton Thunder won their respective conferences. Ottawa became the second CPSL franchise to go undefeated throughout the regular season.

The 1998Canadian Professional Soccer League season was the inaugural season under the Canadian Professional Soccer League name. The season began on May 31, 1998, and concluded on October 14, 1998, with the St. Catharines Wolves defeating the Toronto Olympians in 4-2 victory in a penalty shootout to claim the first CPSL Championship held at Centennial Park Stadium in Toronto, Ontario. Though Toronto was denied the treble they still managed to go undefeated the entire regular season, and dominate the league with the best offensive and defensive record.

The 2011 CSL season was the 14th season in York Region Shooters participation in the Canadian Soccer League. The club ended their CSL campaign by securing the final postseason berth in the First Division. In the postseason York Region defeated division champions SC Toronto in the preliminary round, but were eliminated from the competition in the following round to Toronto Croatia. While in the Second Division their reserve team clinched a playoff berth after finishing third in the East Conference standings. Kadian Lecky was Vaughan's top goalscorer for the sixth consecutive time scoring a personal record of 15 goals.

The 1997 Canadian National Soccer League season was the seventy-fifth season for the Canadian National Soccer League. The season began on June 4, 1997, and concluded on October 8, 1997, with St. Catharines Roma Wolves defeating Toronto Supra in a two-game series for the CNSL Championship. While the league cup was awarded to Toronto Supra due to several irregularities on behave of Kosova Albanians.
