Adrian Dodson also known as Adrian Carew (born 20 September 1970) is a British former Olympic boxer. He competed for Guyana at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul under the name Adrian Carew before representing Great Britain at the 1992 Summer Olympics. [1]

Amateur career

Dodson's first Olympic appearance came as a 17-year-old competing in the light welterweight division. He won his first two fights against Bilal el-Masri of Libya and Vukašin Dobrašinović of Yugoslavia before losing to eventual bronze medallist Reiner Gies of West Germany in the third round. [2]

In 1989 he competed in the 147-pound division of Golden Gloves and won the Sugar Ray Robinson award as the outstanding boxer of the tournament. [3]

After moving to England he was the ABA welterweight champion in 1990, fighting out of Lynn ABC. [4] He then took his mother's last name Dodson and made his second Olympic appearance competing for Great Britain at the 1992 Games in Barcelona. [3] Due to the presence of Robin Reid in the team Dodson was forced to drop from his favoured light middleweight to the welterweight division in order to compete. [5] He won in the first round against Masashi Kawakami but lost in the second round to former World Amateur champion Francisc Vaştag of Romania. [6] Reid went on to win a bronze medal. [5]

Professional career

After turning professional Dodson won his first 18 fights, including winning the WBO inter-continental title and defeating former world champion Lloyd Honeyghan in 1995. He lost to Winky Wright in a world title fight in 1997 but won the IBO super-middleweight title in 2001. [5]

In 1999 he was fined £1,000 and banned for 18 months after being found guilty of biting Alain Bonnamie in the last round of their fight for the Commonwealth title. [7] Dodson retired from boxing in 2003 with a record of 25 wins and 6 defeats. [8] [9]

In 2011 Dodson was scheduled to make a comeback in the super-middleweight division as part of the Prizefighter series, where he could have faced fellow 1992 Olympian Robin Reid. [10] Dodson pulled out before the series as he felt he was not in physical condition to compete and was replaced by Joe Ainscough. [11]

Christopher Cornelius Byrd is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1993 to 2009. He is a two-time world heavyweight champion, having first won the WBO title in 2000 after an upset corner stoppage over then-undefeated Vitali Klitschko. In his first title defense later that year, he lost to Vitali's brother Wladimir Klitschko. In 2002, Byrd defeated Evander Holyfield to win the IBF heavyweight title for his second reign as world champion. He made four successful defenses until losing his title again to Wladimir Klitschko in a 2006 rematch. He was ranked by BoxRec as the world's top 10 heavyweight from 1996 to 2003, reaching his highest ranking of No.4 in 1998.

Great Britain, represented by the British Olympic Association (BOA), competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. British athletes have competed in every Summer Olympic Games. A total of 371 athletes represented Great Britain and the team won twenty medals, five gold, three silver and twelve bronze. This equalled the number of golds won at the previous three Summer Games but was the lowest total medals achieved since the Montreal Games in 1976. Archer Simon Terry and hurdlers Sally Gunnell and Kriss Akabusi each won two medals.

Vernon Forrest was an American professional boxer who competed from 1992 to 2008. He held multiple world championships in two weight classes, including the WBC, IBF, Ring magazine and lineal welterweight between 2002 and 2003, and the WBC super welterweight title twice between 2007 and 2009. In 2002, Forrest was named Fighter of the Year by The Ring and the Boxing Writers Association of America.

Laurent Boudouani is French former professional boxer who competed from 1989 to 1999. He held the WBA light middleweight title from 1996 to 1999 and the European light middleweight title from 1992 to 1993. As an amateur, he won a silver medal in the welterweight event at the 1988 Summer Olympics.

Robin Reid is a British former professional boxer who competed from 1993 to 2012. He held the WBC super-middleweight title from 1996 to 1997, and the IBO super-middleweight title from 2004 to 2005. As an amateur, Reid represented Great Britain at 1992 Summer Olympics, winning a bronze medal in the light-middleweight division.

Daniel Santos (boxer) Puerto Rican boxer

Daniel Santos Peña is a Puerto Rican former professional boxer who competed from 1996 to 2009. As an amateur Santos represented Puerto Rico in international events, including the 1990 and 1992 Junior World Championships, Pan American Boxing Tournament, Goodwill Games, 1995 Pan American Games and the 1996 Summer Olympics, where he won a bronze medal in the Welterweight Division. Santos debuted as a professional in 1996. Santos won the World Boxing Organization Welterweight championship on May 6, 2000. On March 16, 2002 he vacated the welterweight division's championship in order to compete against Yori Boy Campas for the vacant World Boxing Organization Light middleweight championship. Santos defended this championship on four occasions, against Mehrdud Takaloo, Fulgencio Zúñiga, Michael Lerma and Antonio Margarito before losing it to Sergiy Dzindziruk by unanimous decision in a fight that took place on December 3, 2005. On July 11, 2008, Santos won his third professional championship, knocking out Joachim Alcine in six rounds to win the World Boxing Association's light middleweight title.

Andrew Lewis was a Guyanese professional boxer in the Middleweight division and the WBA World Welterweight Champion. He also competed in the men's welterweight event at the 1992 Summer Olympics.

Issake Dabore was a boxer from Niger who mainly fought in the light-welterweight and welterweight weight classes. Dabore competed at three Olympics; Tokyo 1964, Mexico City 1968 and Munich 1972. He was the first Nigerien person to compete at the Olympics and the first Nigerien to win an Olympic medal. Dabore won his Olympic medal at the 1972 Munich Olympics, where he won a bronze medal in the men's light-welterweight.

Clinton Jackson is an American former professional boxer. As an amateur, he competed in the 1976 Summer Olympics. He also won a silver medal at the 1974 World Championships and a gold at the 1975 Pan American Games.

The Prizefighter series was a professional boxing tournament created by boxing promoter Barry Hearn and aired on Sky Sports. The format has an initial eight fighters, who compete in four quarter-finals of 3 x 3 minute rounds followed by two semi-finals and one final all on the same night. The total prize money of the tournament is £80,000 with the winner of the tournament taking home £32,000, a figure that has increased from the initial top prize of £25,000 when the tournament first aired in April 2008. There have been 34 Prizefighter tournaments so far featuring 14 different weight divisions. The last tournament was held in 2015.

Ted Bami Minsende is a former professional boxer. Nicknamed "Dangerous", Bami is a former European light welterweight champion and British light welterweight title challenger. He was until recently the trainer of his nephew, British boxer Isaac Chamberlain. Bami and Chamberlain parted ways following Chamberlain's accusations of theft; however, in May 2018, the Boxing Board of Control cleared Bami of all accusations and he remained Chamberlain's Manager until 2020.

Tony Dodson is a British former professional boxer who competed from 1999 to 2016. He held the British super middleweight title in 2003, and challenged for the Commonwealth super middleweight title in 2006 and the light heavyweight title in 2012.

Christian Kjeld Kristensen known as Christian "Gentleman Chris" Christensen,, was a Danish professional middleweight boxer. His heyday was in the late 1950s and early 1960s, when he won the European middleweight title. Professionally, he had a 20.25% knock-out rate, winning 56 of his 79 professional fights. He was born in Kundby, Holbæk, Zealand, Denmark.

Alain Bonnamie is a Canadian professional boxer of the 1980s, '90s and 2000s who won the World Boxing Council (WBC) Continental Americas light middleweight title, World Boxing Council (WBC) International light middleweight title, and Commonwealth middleweight title, and was a challenger for the North American Boxing Federation (NABF) light middleweight title against Wayne Powell (twice), and Canada light middleweight title against Stephane Ouellet, his professional fighting weight varied from 151+3⁄4 lb, i.e. light middleweight to 169+3⁄4 lb, i.e. light heavyweight.

Dillon Carew is a Guyanese Olympic boxer. He represented his country in the light-welterweight division at the 1992 Summer Olympics. He won his first bout against Rafael Romero of the Dominican Republic, and then lost his second bout to Mark Leduc of Canada.
