Adrian Z. Diaz is an American law enforcement officer who served as the chief of the Seattle Police Department from 2020 to 2024. Diaz had previously served as deputy chief of the department. Diaz assumed office in an acting capacity on September 2,2020,following the resignation of Carmen Best. [1] [2] [3] On September 20,2022,Diaz was appointed to the permanent position. [4]
Diaz and the Seattle Police Department are facing lawsuits relating to sex and race discrimination from officers in the department. [5] [6] On May 29,2024,Mayor Bruce Harrell announced that Diaz was removed from his position as chief and subsequently reassigned to another division. Former King County Sheriff Sue Rahr was appointed as the interim chief of the department. [7]
Diaz was fired as of December 17,2024. [8] The city claims that Diaz had an affair with Jamie Tompkins,who had been hired from the evening anchor desk at KCPQ to become Diaz' Chief of Staff. [9] [10] Tompkins had resigned on November 6,2024. [11]
Born in Santa Ana,California, [12] Diaz was raised in Anaheim,California and Mercer Island,Washington. [12] [13] Diaz earned a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice from Central Washington University and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Washington. [14] Diaz has stated his father was a police officer while serving in the Air Force and later managed a grocery store. His older brother also works for Seattle Police Department. [13]
Diaz stated he worked managing grocery stores before joining the Seattle Police Department. [12] He also worked as a wrestling coach. [13] He began his career with the department as a bike patrolman and undercover officer and expressed uncertainty if he really wanted to be a police officer. [12] Diaz also works as a Master Defensive Tactics instructor at the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission. [15]
Diaz came out as gay in June 2024,amid allegations of discrimination and retaliation and a $5 million tort claim filed against him by 4 female officers. [16] [17] He was also sued by a police captain for discrimination and retaliation. [18] In October 2024,Diaz sued the city of Seattle for $10 million for discrimination,harassment and retaliation. [19] He was on paid administrative leave at the time with a $338,000 salary. [20] [21]

The murder of Timothy Brenton occurred on October 31,2009,in the Central District of Seattle,Washington,United States. Timothy Quinn Brenton,an officer with the Seattle Police Department (SPD),was seated in a parked patrol car with another officer discussing a traffic stop when a gunman stopped his vehicle alongside the patrol car,opened fire on both officers,and fled the scene. Brenton died at the scene and his partner sustained minor injuries. One week later,as a public memorial service for Brenton was being held at KeyArena,the gunman was seriously wounded and apprehended after being shot by police officers in Tukwila.
James Thurman Butts Jr. is an American politician,currently serving as the mayor of Inglewood,California. He rose through the ranks of law enforcement in Inglewood during the 1970s and 1980s,eventually becoming a Deputy Chief. He then worked as the Chief of Police in Santa Monica,California from 1991 to 2006. Butts then took a public safety position with Los Angeles World Airports in 2006. Participants expressed opposition to systemic racism,police brutality and violence against people of color.

She was the first black woman to lead Seattle's police force. She was chief of police during the George Floyd protests. She announced her resignation in August 2020 following budget cuts,and officially left office on September 2,2020. Best currently serves as Director of Global Security Risk Operations at Microsoft.

The zone,originally covering two intersections at the corners of Cal Anderson Park and the roads leading up to them,was established on June 8,2020,by people protesting the May 2020 killing of George Floyd by a police officer in Minneapolis,Minnesota. The zone was cleared of occupants by police on July 1,2020.
