AfroNubians

The AfroNubians (also known as Tarig Abubakar & The Afro Nubians) was a world music band based in Toronto. They played newly composed and traditional pan-African-style music, blended with Latin, reggae, rock sounds. [1]

The AfroNubians came together in 1992. The group's founders included Sudanese immigrant Tarig Abubakar (1964–1998) [2] as leader and principal composer, guitarist Adam Solomon, lead guitarist Joe Szilagy (aka Joe Slant), keyboardist Wail Hajelamin, drummer Kofi Acka, saxophonist Bruno Hedman and bassist Mohammed Hajelamin.

In 1993, the AfroNubians toured western Canada, [3] and in 1994 released their first album, Tour to Africa. [4] [5] In 1995, they released the album The Great Africans and were named Band of the Year at the Toronto African Music Awards.[ citation needed ] [6] That was followed by three tours across Canada and, in 1997, the Toronto Arts Council released their third album, Hobey Laik. [7]

In 1998, shortly before the band was scheduled to embark on its first U.S. tour, Abubakar took a trip to Sudan and was killed in a motor vehicle accident.

In 2005, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation released a CD, produced by Todd Fraracci, of two of the band's live concerts. [8] [9] Musicians included on the CD with Abubakar, Solomon, and Szilagy were Bruno Hedman (saxophone), Jim Heineman (saxophone and flute), Pa Jo (lead guitar), Altaf Bwana Moto (drums) and Joseph Ashong (percussion).

Brighton Rock was a Canadian hard rock band, who released three albums in their home country during the 1980s and 1990s. They broke up in 1991, before reuniting and releasing a live album in 2002.

Adam "The Professor" Solomon is a Juno Award-winning composer, guitar maestro, and singer. Solomon began performing at an early age, playing the kivoti (flute) and the kayamba (shaker) at village celebrations and festivals. He established his career playing lead guitar and singing on recordings and videos with some of Kenya's most popular bands and musicians, including Joseph Kamaru, Bana Citoyen, Super Kalles, Super Mazembe, Les Wanyika, Popo Lipo of Lessa Lessan, Professor Mb. Naaman with the Nine Stars Band, Kanda Bongo Man, Fadhili Williams, Juma Toto, and the Mombasa Roots Band. Beyond the Pale is a Toronto-based Canadian world/roots fusion band. Their style is rooted in klezmer, Balkan and Romanian music but heavily accented with contemporary and North American styles including bluegrass, jazz, reggae, funk and classical chamber music. They are known for unique songcraft, virtuosic musicianship, meticulous dynamics, and exuberant live performances. Black Roots are a roots reggae band from the St. Paul's area of Bristol, England, formed in 1979. They toured extensively in the UK and Europe in the 1980s and early 1990s releasing several albums and singles during that time before disappearing from the music scene for about ten years. Their comeback began when Soundicate/Makasound, a record label in France, released an album in 2004 and followed it up with another in 2007. In December 2010 they performed their first live show for some twenty years at the Trinity Hall in Bristol and since then they have been active once again, playing live dates and releasing a new album.

Huron is a Canadian rock band from Hamilton, Ontario. Members include pedal-steel player/guitarist Aaron Goldstein, known for his session work with Cowboy Junkies, and Cam Malcolm, who was previously in the band Sweet Homewreckers, bassist Adam Melnick, and drummer Pete Hall who was also a founding member of A Northern Chorus.
