Aftenbladet ("The Evening Paper") was a daily newspaper in Oslo, Norway.

History and profile

Aftenbladet was established in 1855 as a continuation of the satirical magazine Krydseren , [1] and had the same editor-in-chief, Ditmar Meidell, for its entire existence except for a short time when J. F. Sandberg edited the newspaper. Contributors include Ole Richter, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, Frederik Bætzmann and Jens Braage Halvorsen. Bjørnson was political editor of the newspaper in 1859, published Ja, vi elsker for the first time in 1859 in Aftenbladet, and published En glad Gut as a feuilleton. The newspaper was liberal-leaning, and anti- Morgenbladet . [2]

The newspaper was printed and published by Christian Schibsted until 1860 when it was sold to W. C. Fabritius. It became defunct in 1881. [2]

Ja, vi elsker dette landet National anthem of Norway

"Ja, vi elsker dette landet" is the Norwegian national anthem. Originally a patriotic song, it came to be commonly regarded as the de facto national anthem of Norway in the early 20th century, after being used alongside "Sønner av Norge" since the 1860s. It was officially adopted in 2019. The lyrics were written by Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson between 1859 and 1868, and the melody was written by his cousin Rikard Nordraak sometime during the winter of 1863 and 1864. It was first performed publicly on 17 May 1864 in connection with the 50th anniversary of the constitution. Usually only the first and the last two verses are sung.

Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson Norwegian writer (1832–1910)

Bjørnstjerne Martinius Bjørnson was a Norwegian writer who received the 1903 Nobel Prize in Literature "as a tribute to his noble, magnificent and versatile poetry, which has always been distinguished by both the freshness of its inspiration and the rare purity of its spirit". The first Norwegian Nobel laureate, he was a prolific polemicist and extremely influential in Norwegian public life and Scandinavian cultural debate. Bjørnson is considered to be one of the four great Norwegian writers, alongside Ibsen, Lie, and Kielland. He is also celebrated for his lyrics to the Norwegian national anthem, "Ja, vi elsker dette landet". The composer Fredrikke Waaler based a composition for voice and piano (Spinnersken) on a text by Bjørnson, as did Anna Teichmüller.

The 1920s saw a wave of establishments which restricted themselves to covering specific outer boroughs of the former Aker municipality. The early 21st century saw several new borough-specific newspapers emerge, alongside some publications seeking to cover the politics of the city as a whole.
