Ahmad Al Khaled Al Sabah is a Kuwaiti politician and the former lieutenant general in the Kuwaiti Armed Forces. He served as deputy prime minister and minister of defense of Kuwait from 2012 to 2013.

Early life

Ahmad Al Sabah is the son of Khaled Al Hamad Al Sabah and Mouza Al Ahmad Al Sabah, a daughter of Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who was the 10th ruler of Kuwait from 1921 to 1950. [1] He is the brother of Mohammad Al Khalid Al Sabah, former deputy prime minister and interior minister of Kuwait. [1] His other brother, Sabah Al Khalid Al Sabah, served as prime minister [2] and from 2024 was appointed Crown Prince.

Career

Al Sabah is a military officer with the rank of lieutenant general. [3] He was appointed as the 7th chief of general staff of the Kuwaiti Armed Forces in January 2010. [4]

Al Sabah was appointed as deputy prime minister and minister of defense on 14 February 2012 as part of the cabinet led by Prime Minister Jaber Al Mubarak Al Sabah. [5] Ahmad Al Sabah's tenure ended on 4 August 2013 when Khaled Al Jarrah Al Sabah was appointed both deputy prime minister and minister of defense. [6] [7]

He is a commando officer in Kuwait Army who progressed in the chain of command since 1977, when he got commissioned from Kuwait military college, currently Ali Al-Sabah Military College, until reaching the highest post in the Army as a chief of general staff.

On 5 April 2022, the Prime Minister tendered a letter of governmental resignation to the Crown Prince. On 10 May 2022, the Emir accepted the government resignation. The government will function as care-taker until the formation of the new government.

Talal Khaled Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, also known as Talal Al-Khaled, is a Kuwaiti politician who previously served in the Kuwaiti government as the first deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Interior and Minister of Defense from 2022 till 2023. Additionally, he served as the Governor of the Capital Governorate.

The Kuwaiti political gridlock, which extended from 2020 to May 2024, was marked by a persistent standoff between the appointed cabinet and the elected parliament in Kuwait. This crisis was set against a backdrop of successive internal succession crises within the ruling Al Sabah family, beginning with the death of Emir Sabah Al Ahmad in 2020. Leadership transitioned to his half-brother Nawaf, who died in 2023, subsequently elevating Mishal Al Sabah to the role of emir. Before June 1, 2024, Mishal, the last surviving member of his generation and a son of Ahmad Al Jaber Al-Sabah, had not appointed a successor.
