Aiono Nonumalo Sofara is a chief (matai) and former Member of Parliament in Samoa. He was a member of the Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP) and later the Samoan National Development Party (SNDP).

Samoan National Development Party

The Samoan National Development Party (SNDP) was a political party in Samoa, and the country's main opposition party between 1988 and 2003.

He became Speaker of the National Legislature when the Human Rights Protection Party first came to power. He was the Speaker from 1982 to 1987. [1] Nonumalo then went on to join the SNDP. He was also a strong opponent of the introduction of universal suffrage, and actively sought to have the act repealed.

Aiono was married to the late Eni Sofara, [2] sister of two other Samoan parliamentarians, Laulu Fetauimalemau Mata'afa and Matatumua Maimoana.

Masiofo La'ulu Fetauimalemau Mata'afa, also known as Fetaui Mata'afa, was an ambassador and a member of parliament in Samoa. She was also the wife of Samoa's first Prime Minister, Fiame Mata'afa Faumuina Mulinu'u II. Their daughter, Fiame Naomi Mata'afa, is a matai high chief and Cabinet Minister in the Government of Samoa. The honorific title "Masiofo" is the queenly title for the wife of a paramount chief in Samoa.

He served as Prime Minister twice, first between 13 April and 18 September 1982, and then from 30 December 1985 until 8 April 1988. Aiono Fanaafi Le Tagaloa was a chief (matai), scholar, historian and professor of Samoa. An authority on Samoan culture and language, she was one of the most educated female matai in the country with a PhD in educational philosophy and applied linguistics from the University of London.

Le Tagaloa Pita is a high chief matai and a former Member of Parliament of Samoa. He is a matai from the village of Sili on the island of Savai'i and has an honorary doctorate from Drew University in the United States. During his political career, he was a member of the Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP) and a cabinet minister with the portfolios of economic affairs and post office.
