Since independence, with Jaja Wachuku as the first Minister for Foreign Affairs and Commonwealth Relations, later called External Affairs, Nigerian foreign policy has been characterised by a focus on Africa as a regional power and by attachment to several fundamental principles: African unity and independence; capability to exercise hegemonic influence in the region: peaceful settlement of disputes; non-alignment and non-intentional interference in the internal affairs of other nations; and regional economic cooperation and development. In carrying out these principles, Nigeria participates in the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Non-Aligned Movement, the Commonwealth of Nations, and the United Nations.
The New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) is an economic development program of the African Union. NEPAD was adopted at the 37th session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government in July 2001 in Lusaka, Zambia. NEPAD aims to provide an overarching vision and policy framework for accelerating economic co-operation and integration among African countries.
Chief Olusegun Matthew Okikiola Aremu Obasanjo, GCFR, is a Nigerian political and military leader who served as Nigeria's head of state from 1976 to 1979 and later as its president from 1999 to 2007. Ideologically a Nigerian nationalist, he was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from 1999 to 2015 and again from 2018 onward.

After he lost his re-election in 2003, he was appointed the first Minister of Defence of the Fourth Republic with no prior military background from 2003 to 2007. Joy Uche Angela Ogwu is a former Foreign Minister of Nigeria and a former Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations in New York 2008–2017. She is the first woman to hold the post of Permanent Representative, to the United Nations in the history of Nigeria. Bello Maitama Yusuf Sardaunan Dutse is a Nigerian politician, Businessman and Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He was the Minister for Internal Affairs in 1979 and Minister for Commerce in 1982. He was educated at Northgate University, Washington and was a member of the defunct National Party of Nigeria. Prior, to joining politics, he was a lawyer and businessman and had served as a chief registrar at the Chief Magistrate's Court in Kano. He was also a member of the Constituent Assembly and is one of Jigawas few billionaires till now. Bello Maitama has set up the stage for all politicians and businessmen in Nigeria. As minister for Commerce, he was in charge of curtailing imported goods to Nigeria which was massively draining the nation's foreign reserves.
Nenadi Esther Usman is a Nigerian politician from Jere in Kaduna State, Nigeria. She was elected Senator for Kaduna South in the April 2011 elections, running on the People's Democratic Party (PDP) platform.

Simisola Olayemi Onibuwe Johnson was a Nigerian dentist and gender advocate who served as Minister for Social Development and Culture during the nation's second republic. She was a former chairman of Allied Bank and the Lagos State branch of National Council of Women Societies. Johnson and Grace Guobadia both qualified as dentists in 1957, making both women the first set of trained female dentists in the country. She was a fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.
Janet Febisola Adeyemi is the current President of Women in Mining in Nigeria, an affiliate of International Women in Mining. She also served on the Strategic Development and Policy Implementation Committee of the 2016 Governor-elect of Ondo State. She is part of a broad civil society network coordinating an intervention in the recent South Kaduna crisis. She notably served in Nigeria national House of Representative, Executive Board Member of ICRC, Senior Special Assistant to the Presidency on National Assembly Matters, Chairman of Ondo State Cocoa Industry, amongst other advisory committees and national developmental agendas. During her term in the National Assembly, she served as Chairman on Irrigation, Flood and Erosion Control, sub-committee Chairman for Solid Minerals and Water Resources. She sponsored/co-sponsored 15 bills enacted as law amongst several other initiative bills despite serving as a member of a minority political party. She declared her intention to run for senator of Ondo South District under All Progressives Congress (APC) on 17 September 2018.
Aishatu Madawaki, OFR is a Nigerian academic and politician. She was the first woman professor from the old Sokoto caliphate states, an Islamic dominated region in Northern Nigeria. In 1999, she was made commissioner for women affairs and social development by Attahiru Bafarawa-led administration. Madawaki is also an advocate for the representation of Nigerian women in politics.
