Aisha Ismail, MON, appointed Minister of Women Affairs from June 1999 until May 2003, is a Nigerian matriarch and public servant.

Biography

Aishatu Ismail was educated at Ahmadu Bello University and University College of Swansea in Wales, United Kingdom.

She served in the Government of Kano State during the 1980s, becoming the first female commissioner in the Kano State Executive Council. [1]

She became the first director general of the National Commission for Women in 1992.

At various times between 1992 and 1994, she was a Special Envoy to the Organisation of African Unity (now African Union), Head of Delegation to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in Vienna and President of the African Regional Coordinating Committee on the Integration of Women in Development of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. Aisha served in the Cabinet of Olusegun Obasanjo as the Federal Minister of Women Affairs and Youth Development from 1999 until 2003. She worked on the passage of 2003 Child Rights Act, [3] and during her tenure was a member of the opposition All Nigeria People's Party. [4]

She was made a Member of the Order of the Niger awarded "for services to the nation"; she attended the 2014 National Conference as a delegate from Kano State. [5]

After leaving public service, she dedicated herself to her private life. [6]

Olusegun Obasanjo Former president of Nigeria and elder statesman

Chief Olusegun Matthew Okikiola Aremu Obasanjo, GCFR, is a Nigerian political and military leader who served as Nigeria's head of state from 1976 to 1979 and later as its president from 1999 to 2007. Ideologically a Nigerian nationalist, he was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from 1999 to 2015 and again from 2018 onward.

Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, titled Turakin Sokoto from 1962, was the first democratically elected President of Nigeria, after the transfer of power by military head of state General Olusegun Obasanjo in 1979 giving rise to the Second Nigerian Republic.

Ambassador Oluyemi Adeniji was a Nigerian career diplomat and politician who was the Special Representative of the General Secretary with the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) from November 19, 1999 to July 16, 2003. Rabiu Kwankwaso Nigerian politician

Rabi'u Musa Kwankwaso, FNSE, FNIQS is a Nigerian politician who was the Governor of Kano State from 1999 to 2003 and 2011 to 2015. After he lost his re-election in 2003, he was appointed the first Minister of Defence of the Fourth Republic with no prior military background from 2003 to 2007. He was later elected to the Senate in 2015, serving one term under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) representing Kano Central Senatorial District.

Bello Maitama Yusuf Sardaunan Dutse is a Nigerian politician, Businessman and Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. As minister for Commerce, he was in charge of curtailing imported goods to Nigeria which was massively draining the nation's foreign reserves.

Nenadi Esther Usman is a Nigerian politician from Jere in Kaduna State, Nigeria. She was elected Senator for Kaduna South in the April 2011 elections, running on the People's Democratic Party (PDP) platform.

Iyabo Obasanjo is a former Nigerian Senator and the daughter of former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo and his wife Oluremi Obasanjo.

Abraham Babalola Borishade was a Nigerian politician. He was a four time Federal Minister in Nigeria, between 1999-2011. He was known as an electrical engineer, teacher and political strategist.

Simisola Olayemi Onibuwe Johnson was a Nigerian dentist and gender advocate who served as Minister for Social Development and Culture during the nation's second republic. She was a former chairman of Allied Bank and the Lagos State branch of National Council of Women Societies. Johnson and Grace Guobadia both qualified as dentists in 1957, making both women the first set of trained female dentists in the country. She was a fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.

Janet Febisola Adeyemi is the current President of Women in Mining in Nigeria, an affiliate of International Women in Mining. She also served on the Strategic Development and Policy Implementation Committee of the 2016 Governor-elect of Ondo State. She is part of a broad civil society network coordinating an intervention in the recent South Kaduna crisis. She notably served in Nigeria national House of Representative, Executive Board Member of ICRC, Senior Special Assistant to the Presidency on National Assembly Matters, Chairman of Ondo State Cocoa Industry, amongst other advisory committees and national developmental agendas. During her term in the National Assembly, she served as Chairman on Irrigation, Flood and Erosion Control, sub-committee Chairman for Solid Minerals and Water Resources. She sponsored/co-sponsored 15 bills enacted as law amongst several other initiative bills despite serving as a member of a minority political party. She declared her intention to run for senator of Ondo South District under All Progressives Congress (APC) on 17 September 2018.

Aishatu Madawaki, OFR is a Nigerian academic and politician. She was the first woman professor from the old Sokoto caliphate states, an Islamic dominated region in Northern Nigeria. In 1999, she was made commissioner for women affairs and social development by Attahiru Bafarawa-led administration. Madawaki is also an advocate for the representation of Nigerian women in politics.
