Akasol AG is a German manufacturer of batteries for electric vehicles. Akasol was founded in 2008. Its headquarters and main manufacturing site are located in Darmstadt. A manufacturing site in Detroit was opened in 2019. In 2021, the company was acquired by the American automotive supplier BorgWarner. [1]

History

The Company emerged from a solar technology team founded in 1989 at the Darmstadt University of Technology's Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. The student team developed a number of solar and battery driven cars, aiming at low energy consumption. [2]

In 2008, members of the team founded the Akasol Engineering GmbH, a for-profit company for developing Lithium-ion batteries and an electric car suitable for everyday use. The name was changed to Akasol GmbH in 2012. [3]

In June 2018 the company went public as Akasol AG. Starting from June 2021, BorgWarner took over a majority of Akasol. [1] [4]

In August 2021, a factory with 15,000 m², called "Gigafactory 1" went operational in Darmstadt. Production capacity is up to 1 GWh during the first stage, and by 2022 is planned to increase to 2.5 GWh. [5]

The company designed and assembled lithium-iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery systems for automotive and power storage utility applications, and electric cars. Miles Automotive partnered with Hafei and Qingyuan Electric Vehicle to establish Coda Automotive as an affiliate company. The name CODA comes from the musical term for the concluding passage of a piece of music. The electric vehicle industry in China is the largest in the world, accounting for around 58% of global production of electric vehicles (EVs) and more than 1.5 million exports in 2023. In 2023, CAAM reported China had sold 9.05 million passenger electric vehicles, consisting 6.26 million BEVs and 2.79 million PHEV. Automotive Energy Supply Corporation (AESC) is a manufacturer of lithium ion batteries for electric vehicles established 2007 as a joint venture between Nissan, and Tokin Corporation. Since 2018 Chinese company Envision is a strong partner in the joint venture.

Northvolt AB is a Swedish battery developer and manufacturer, specialising in lithium-ion technology for electric vehicles. Founded in 2015 by two former Tesla executives, it commissioned its first manufacturing plant in Skellefteå, Sweden in 2021 and announced plans for five others in Europe and North America. The company filed for Chapter 11 reorganization on November 21, 2024.
