Akbar Ebrahim (born 14 December 1963) is a well-known Indian motorsports driver. [1] He is the first Indian to take part in an international race when he participated in the British Formula 2 in England. He is currently the President of the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India [2] from September 2020. He is also the head of the International Karting Commission, [3] the CIK of FIA.

In 1988, Karivardhan, considered as one of the stalwarts of Indian Motorsports, built the first Indian Formula car, with a Maruti 800cc engine and the inaugural race was won by Akbar Ebrahim. Later, the championship was named as FISSME, Formula India Single Seater Maruti Engine. The first FISSME race was held at Sholavaram and the next year in 1989, the legendary Jackie Stewart laid the foundation for the racing track at Irungattukottai, which is presently known as Madras International Circuit.

Ebrahim was also credited with teaching basics to India's first Formula One driver Narain Karthikeyan. [4]

Career

After his schooling in Don Bosco Matriculation in Chennai, Ebrahim finished his Commerce graduation from the Loyola College, Chennai. He is a professional cricket player and represented Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy. [5] He is also a car racer who took part in open-wheel Formula racing.

Ebrahim was the first Indian to take part in the British F2 [4] races. He took part in the 1994 British Formula Two Championship and also participated in the 1996 British Formula Three Championship. [4] In a Dallara F398-Mugen Honda he took part in the MRF Madras Formula 3 Grand Prix and got a podium. He went on to drive a SMR AF2000-Ford Zetec shod on Michelin tyres in the Formula 2000 Asia Championship in 2000 for the FRD team. In the 2004 Formula LGB Swift Championship he took part as part of the Super Speeds team, the famous outfit of Karivardhan, in a Maruti Esteem. He was also a popular rally driver and made a comeback taking part in the 2018 Indian National Rally Championship at Coimbatore after 25 years. [6]

Akbar Ebrahim was first elected as the President of the FMSCI in 2016. Ebrahim was elected as the President at the 43rd Annual General Meeting of the club, when he replaced Zayn Khan, who has been leading FMSCI since September 2015, after the death of Bharat Raj, the then president. [7]

Sundaram Karivaradhan Naidu or Kari was an Indian formula racing driver, designer and a business executive. He was one of the pioneers of Indian motorsports. He designed the Formula Maruti open wheeled race car and supported Indian racers, notably Narain Karthikeyan, Karun Chandhok, and Armaan Ebrahim, in their entry into motorsports. He was later killed in an air crash, aged 41.

Formula LGB Hyundai is a single seater, open wheel class of motorsport in India launched in 2006 by LGB with Hyundai the engine supplier. The cars are powered by 1.4 liter Indian built Hyundai Accent engines in the entry level JK Road Racing National Championship series. This car along with Formula LGB Swift can be considered as an Indian equivalent of Europe's Formula Ford series, where it is void of aerodynamic aids like wings. This series is one of the starter formula series to enable karting drivers step into a formula car.

Formula Rolon, also known as Formula Rolon Chevrolet and later Formula Rolon 2010 is an open wheel single seater Formula Racing car made and raced in India. They run in the single make championships held in the tracks of Coimbatore and Chennai. The car is similar to Formula Asia, and was powered by 1600cc Chevrolet and later Suzuki engines with a racing gear box. The car was launched in Mumbai December 2005 and made its debut in Coimbatore track in September 2006. The 2010 season was its last season as LG Sports announced that it will not enter Formula Rolon for the 2011 season.

Indian National Rally Championship (INRC) is a rallying Natioinal Championship in different classes with a series of rounds, organised uder the aegis of the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI), which is the Governing Body or ASN of India recognised by FIA culminating with National Champion Driver and Co-Driver. The driver and co-drivers's championship are based on a point system. The championship first received its National Championship Title status in 1988. Aroor Arjun Rao of Mangaluru is the reigning National champion. Supported by MRF Tyres, he drives for Mandovi Racing team in a Maruti Baleno. The 2024 National Championship begins in Chennai from 15 March 2024 with the South India Rally (SIR) which is also a round of the APRC Asia Cup.

The Motorsports Association of India (MAI) was the national sporting authority (ASN) of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) in India for a period between 2000 and 2008. It was the association responsible for the control and promotion of motorsport in India under the International Sporting Code of the FIA for a few years. The current ASN is Federation of Motor Sports Clubs in India (FMSCI). MAI was a rival body formed by Nazir Hoosein.

Nazir Hoosein was an Indian racing driver and motorsport administrator. He was the President of the Motorsports Association of India, Vice President of the FIA for Sport, chief steward of the World Rally Championship and a member of the World Motor Sport Council.

The JK Tyre National Racing Championship also known as JK-NRC is an auto racing championship series consisting of several one-make series events of open wheel single seater formula cars and saloon cars in India. This championship series is also considered to be the stepping stone for Indian Racing drivers who want to break into international motorsports. Several drivers have gone on to take part in international events including Formula One and A1 Grand Prix and other premier racing series around the world.

Arjun Balu is an Indian motorsports driver. After starting as a road racing driver in 1992, he took part in the Indian National Rally Championship for 17 years. He won 11 Championships, all in road racing and is currently racing in the Indian Touring Car (ITC) class in the MRF MMSC fmsci Indian National Car Racing Championship 2023. He is the reigning National champion in the ITC class (2022).

Karnataka Motor Sports Club, popularly known as KMSC, is a state association for promoting and conducting motorsports in the Indian state of Karnataka. The club is based in Bengaluru. It is a founder member of the Federation of Motor Sports Club of India (FMSCI), the governing body for motor sports in India. It is one of the oldest ‘active’ motorsports clubs in India. It holds the record of organising the Karnataka 1000 rally continuously for the last 48 years.
