George Akilagpa Sawyerr, FGA (born 24 March 1939) is a Ghanaian academic. He is a professor in the field of law and has served in various universities in Ghana and abroad. He is a former vice-chancellor of the University of Ghana [1] and also a former president of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Early life and education

George was born on 24 March 1939 to Akilagpa Sawyerr and Charlotte Amy (née Mettle) Sawyerr.

He attended Achimota School, where he received his Cambridge Certificate in 1956 and his Cambridge Higher Certificate in 1958. He studied at the University of Durham for his bachelor of laws degree (LL.B). He received his Master of Laws degree (LL.M) from the University of London and the University of California, Berkeley. He received his doctorate in Juridical Science (JSD) from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1972. [2] [3]

Career

Akilagpa joined the teaching faculty of the University of Dar Es Salaam in 1964 as lecturer and later on a senior lecturer. In 1969 he was appointed director of the university's research center, a position he held until 1970. He moved to Ghana that same year and was employed at the University of Ghana as a lecturer at the faculty of law. In 1979 he worked as a professor of law at the University of Papua New Guinea. He worked there until 1985 when he was appointed vice-chancellor of the University of Ghana. [4] He served in that capacity until 1992. In 1993 he was appointed director of research for the Association of African Universities, rising to the position of Secretary-General of the Association from 2003 to 2008. [5] In 2015, he was elected president of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences. [6]

Akilgpa has authored many books, chapters and articles that have been published in journals. His interest are mostly focused on legal matters and higher education in Africa. Some of his books include:

Award and legacy

In 2018 he was conferred an honorary Doctor of Letters (D. Litt, Honoris Causa) degree by the University of Cape Coast. [12]

The road stretch from the roundabout to the campus of the University of Ghana was named in his honour. [13]

Personal life

He is married to Judith Sara Quitkin. Together they have two children. His hobbies include tennis.[ citation needed ]

Ernest Aryeetey, is an Emeritus Professor at the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) at the University of Ghana. Until 31st July 2024, he was the secretary-general of the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA). He was also previously vice-chancellor of the University of Ghana (2010-2016). Prior to his appointment as vice-chancellor, he was a senior fellow and director of the Africa Growth Initiative at the Brookings Institution, Washington, D.C. He had also been director of ISSER at the University of Ghana for the period February 2003 to January 2010.

Harry Alphonso Ebun Sawyerr MBE was a Sierra Leonean Anglican theologian and writer on African religion. He became principal of Fourah Bay College and Vice Chancellor of the University of Sierra Leone.

Ebenezer Oduro Owusu is a Ghanaian entomologist and university administrator who served as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana from 1 August 2016 to 31 July 2021. In this role, he was the principal academic and administrative officer of the university. Owusu is a professor of entomology at the Department of Animal Biology and Conservation Science and prior to his appointment as vice-chancellor, he was the provost of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences at the University of Ghana. He is the current President of the Presbyterian University College.

Dr. Ken Kwaku is an international investment and corporate governance expert. In 2013 he was nominated together with the late President of Ghana, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills for the Africa Achievers Award. This recognition stemmed from his track record in the area of business development and the unearthing of leadership potentials across Africa. He is Ghana's Honorary Consular to Tanzania and a special adviser to the former president, H.E. Benjamin Mkapa.

Henrietta Joy Abena Nyarko Mensa-Bonsu, is a Supreme Court Judge of the Republic of Ghana. She was nominated by president Nana Akufo-Addo. She is the 5th female member of the Court. Prior to her appointment to the Supreme Court, she was a Ghanaian law professor who served as a member of the United Nations Independent Panel On Peace Operations.

Kwesi Yankah is a Ghanaian academic, author, and university administrator. He is a professor of linguistics and oral literature specializing in the ethnography of communications. He has served as the Pro-vice-chancellor of the University of Ghana and the president of the Central University. The author of several books, he was inducted as a fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1999. He is currently the Ghanaian Minister of State in charge of tertiary education.

Yaa Ntiamoa-Baidu is a Ghanaian zoologist, environmental specialist, academic and management expert. In March 2017, she was appointed the Chair of the Board of Millennium Development Authority of Ghana. She served as a Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana until her retirement in 2011. She is a member of the New Patriotic Party of Ghana.

Smile Afua Gavua Dzisi was born on 18 June 1971, to Rev. Eusebius Kofi Gavua and Mrs Rebecca Dzandu Gavua from Wusuta in the Volta Region of Ghana. She was the first female to be appointed rector in the history of the Koforidua Polytechnic now Koforidua Technical University. She is the current interim vice chancellor of the Koforidua Technical University.

Johnson Nyarko Boampong is a Ghanaian pharmacist, biomedical Scientist, professor and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast.

Kwadzo Ebli Senanu was a Ghanaian academic in English literature. Originally, a teaching member of the University of Ghana, he served as Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university from 1981 to 1983 and as acting Vice-Chancellor from 1983 to 1985.
