Akramul Qader is a Bangladeshi diplomat and former Ambassador of Bangladesh to the United States. [1] [2] [3] He was the longest serving ambassador of Bangladesh to the United States. [4] He had the rank of a state minister in the government. [5]

Early life

Qader completed his M.A. from the University of Dhaka in Islamic History. In the 1960s he taught in college and would later join the Pakistan Ministry of Foreign office as a section officer. He graduated in 1970 from National Institute of Public Administration, Dhaka and in 1973 completed a Foreign Service Training Course in Australia. [6]

Career

Qader joined the Bangladeshi Foreign service in 1972 returning from Pakistan after the Independence of Bangladesh. He was assigned to the USSR in 1974, where he worked till 1976. He was posted in Burma from 1976 to 1981 and in Pakistan from 1981 to 1984. From 1984 to 1986 he was the Director of the South East Asia Division in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1996 he served as the ambassador of Bangladesh to Thailand and Cambodia till 1999. [6]

From 1999 to 2002, he was the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to South Africa, and was also cross-accredited as High Commissioner to Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, and Lesotho. He served as the Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific. From November 2009 to May 2014 he was the Ambassador of Bangladesh to the United States. [6] [7] [8]

Humayun Rasheed Choudhury was a Bangladeshi career diplomat and Speaker of the Bangladesh National Parliament from 1996 to 2001. He was elected president of the 41st session of the UN General Assembly in 1986. He was awarded Independence Day Award in 2018 posthumously by the Government of Bangladesh.

Quazi Golam Dastgir

Major General Quazi Golam Dastgir was a Bangladesh army officer and diplomat who belonged to a coterie of immigrant elites from the Indian state of West Bengal. Following a distinguished career in the Pakistan Army, he opted to join the defence services of Bangladesh after the country’s independence in 1971. Quickly rising to the then top rank of Major General in the Bangladesh Army, ahead of all his military academy course mates, from 1975 to 1977, he served as the Zonal Martial Law Administrator for Dhaka Division. This included the nation’s capital and was unequivocally the most important of the four provinces in Bangladesh. He commanded two of the five independent brigades that comprised the Bangladesh Army up to the mid-1970s, and served as chief of the border forces, holding the office of Director General of Bangladesh Rifles. He was one of the three Major Generals in the Bangladesh Army following the promulgation of martial law in 1975. In 1977, the service of Dastgir was transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and he went on to serve four terms as Ambassador of Bangladesh until his retirement in 1991.

Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali is a Bangladeshi politician and diplomat who served as parliamentarian and cabinet minister including the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh from 2013 to 2019. He previously served as Minister of Disaster Management and Relief from 2012 to 2013.

Tabarak Husain was a former Bangladeshi career diplomat. He was foreign secretary of Bangladesh from 1975 to 1978. He also held the position of chairman of Sadharan Bima Corporation and Grameen Bank.

Faruq Ahmed Choudhury was a Bangladeshi diplomat. He served as Bangladesh's first Chief of Protocol beginning in 1972, Foreign Secretary from 1984 to 1986, and High Commissioner to India from 1986 to 1992.
