Al Barbre (born October 13, 1942) is an American former basketball coach. He has coached men's and women's basketball at the high school and college level. He served as an assistant coach for the Stephen F. Austin and Lamar men's basketball teams. At Stephen F. Austin, the Lumberjacks won 29 straight games in the 1969–70 season. [1] He took over as the Lamar Lady Cardinals basketball head coach prior to the 1987–88 season. As head coach for the Lady Cardinals, his team's results improved each year. His 1990–91 team qualified for the 1991 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament and defeated Texas, LSU, and Arkansas before losing to the eventual tournament champion finalist, Virginia Cavaliers, in the Elite Eight round. In addition to his coaching skills, he was a good recruiter. [1] [3]

At 29–4, his 1990–91 team holds the Lamar Lady Cardinals record for most wins in a season. The 1991 NCAA regional tournament game held on the Lady Cardinals' home court, the Montagne Center, against the LSU Lady Tigers set a Montagne Center attendance record for a women's basketball game with 9,143 fans in attendance. Honors and probation

As head coach for the Lady Cardinals, Al Barbe was named American South Conference Co-coach of the Year in 1988 and 1989. In 1991, he was named American South Conference Coach of the Year and Converse District VI Coach of the Year.

Following an NCAA investigation, all wins for the 1990–91 season were vacated due to violations by the program. In addition, the program was placed on two years' probation and the number of allowed scholarships was reduced during the probation period. Al Barbre resigned as head coach. [6] Barbre did not coach at the collegiate level again following his resignation in 1992.

The Montagne Center, built in 1984, is a mixed-use Auxiliary/E&G event center that houses a 10,746-seat a multi-purpose arena and a variety of event spaces in Beaumont, Texas. The Montagne Center was designed especially for the basketball program with a wing designated for instructional purposes. The Montagne Center is currently home to the Lamar University Cardinals, the Lady Cardinals basketball teams, and the Lamar University Pathway Program, Lamar University's language program. The Lamar Cardinals and Lady Cardinals refers to the college athletics teams of Lamar University, in Beaumont, Texas. The Cardinals and Lady Cardinals teams compete in seventeen NCAA Division I sports as a member of the Southland Conference. The Cardinals rejoined the Southland after spending the 2021-22 athletic year in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).

The Lamar Cardinals basketball team represents Lamar University in NCAA Division I men's basketball competition. The Cardinals currently play in the Southland Conference following a return from the [[Western Athletic Conference on July 11, 2022. They were one of four programs, all from Texas, that left the Southland Conference on July 1, 2021 to join the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). Lamar left the Southland Conference for the second time, having initially joined at the league's formation in 1963, left in 1987, and returned in 1999. After one season in the WAC, Lamar returned to the Southland Conference The Cardinals have played home games in the Montagne Center since 1984. The Lamar University basketball team is one of the school's most storied athletic programs. The Cardinals have competed in NCAA Tournament play eleven times (five at the NCAA College Division level and six times at the NCAA Division I level with the most recent appearance in the 2012 tournament. The Lady Cardinals, led by first year head coach Robin Harmony, played their home games at the Montagne Center and are members of the Southland Conference. The Lady Cardinals finished the season tied for the Southland Conference regular season championship with Stephen F. Austin. The Lady Cardinals were the Number One seed in the conference tournament because of the conference tie-breaker. After falling to Northwestern Louisiana in the Conference tournament final game, the Lady Cardinals received and invitation to the WNIT. The Lady Cardinals played the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles in Hattiesburg, MS.

Liz Galloway McQuitter has held positions as head coach and assistant coach women's basketball at the collegiate level. In April, 2015, she ended her career in athletics retiring as head coach of the Rockdale High School in Rockdale, Texas. McQuitter served as head coach at Mundelein College (1984–1986), Lamar (1990–1994), and Northern Illinois (1994–1998). McQuitter took over the head coaching position at Lamar after the resignation of Al Barbre following an NCAA investigation which ended with two years probation and other penalties for the team. In spite of the cloudy start, McQuitter's team tied for first-place finish in the Sun Belt regular season. The Lady Cardinals were not eligible for post-season play that year. McQuitter left Lamar after four seasons to become head coach for the Northern Illinois Huskies women's basketball team. Her first season at Northern Illinois was also successful as the team qualified for the 1995 NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Tournament. Coach McQuitter served as assistant coach at Northwestern, Dartmouth, DePaul, and Texas A&M.

The Lady Cardinals finished the season with an overall record of 22-8. They won the Southland Conference regular season championship were 17-1 in Southland play. After losing to Nicholls in a Southland Conference tournament semi-final game 68-74, the Lady Cardinals were an automatic qualifier to the WNIT. Their season ended with a first round 68-80 loss to the TCU Horned Frogs in the first round.

The Lady Cardinals compete in the Southland Conference and play their home games at McDonald Gym, an on campus facility in Beaumont, Texas. Brandon Crisp was named head coach on July 15, 2022. He replaced former head coach Jordan Lay who left the program on May 5, 2022, for another position.

Their season ended with a first round 71-73 loss to the South Alabama in the first round. The loss ended a 42 home court win streak which started on November 16, 2016. Chastadie Barrs set the NCAA Division I steals record in the WNIT game at 192. She had tied the steals record of 191 the previous season.

The Cardinals were led by sixth-year head coach Tic Price and played their home games at the Montagne Center in Beaumont, Texas as members of the Southland Conference. They finished the season 17–15, 10–10 in Southland play to finish in a three-way tie for sixth place. They defeated McNeese State in the first round of the Southland Tournament and were set to face Nicholls in the second round before the tournament was cancelled amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Lady Cardinals, led by first year head coach Aqua Franklin, played their home games at the Montagne Center as members of the Southland Conference. They failed to qualify for the Southland Women's Tournament, which would eventually be cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
