The Lamar Lady Cardinals basketball team represents Lamar University in NCAA Division I women's basketball competition. [2] The team plays in the 10,080 seat Montagne Center. The Lady Cardinals currently compete at the NCAA Division I level in the Southland Conference.

History

The Lady Cardinals have competed as members of four conferences at the NCAA Division I level. Lamar competed in the Southland Conference beginning in 1983. The Lady Cardinals competed in the American South Conference from 1987 to 1991. From 1991 to 1998, the Lady Cardinals competed as members of the Sun Belt Conference. Lamar returned to the Southland Conference beginning with the 1998–99 season. The Lady Cardinals moved to the Western Athletic Conference in 2021 rejoining the Southland Conference on July 11, 2022 after one year in the WAC. [3] [4]

Al Barbre years

In the 1991 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament Lamar, under coach Al Barbre, made a run as a tenth seed in the Austin regional. The 1991 Lady Cardinals defeated Texas, LSU and Arkansas before being defeated by Virginia in the Elite Eight. Virginia went on to lose in the National championship game by 3 points.

Larry Tidwell years

Larry Tidwell coached the women's basketball team from 2007 through the end of the 2012-2013 season. Coach Tidwell turned the team around from a struggling program to a perennial power in the Southland Conference. In 2010 the team won the regular season and conference tournament to advance to the 2010 NCAA tournament. The Lady Cardinals made their first ever appearance in the preseason WNIT in the fall of 2010. In the 2011 season, coach Tidwell's Lady Cardinals received their first top 100 RPI ranking (RPI #80) since the figures were made public in the 2005 season. [5] The 2010-2011 squad finished with a record of 25-8 and made an appearance in the 2011 post season WNIT.

Coach Tidwell resigned his position in March, 2013 to take a position at University of Texas-Pan American as head women's basketball coach. [6]

Robin Harmony years

Robin Harmony was named head coach on April 30, 2013 [7] and remained until April 2019. Her first Lady Cardinal team shared the Southland Conference regular season title. The Lady Cardinals also participated in their second WNIT and fourth post season tournament appearance in five seasons. [8] The Lady Cardinals competed in the WBI tournament in 2017. The team won the Southland Conference 2017-18 regular season title outright repeating as outright champions in 2018-19. The Lady Cardinals represented the Southland Conference in the Women's National Invitation Tournament for the third and the fourth time.

Coach Harmony resigned her position on April 19, 2019 to become head women's basketball coach for the College of Charleston. [9] [10] [11]

Aqua Franklin years

Aqua Franklin was named head coach on May 1, 2019 becoming the 14th women's basketball head coach in program history. [12]

Billy Duane Tubbs was an American men's college basketball coach. The Tulsa, Oklahoma native was the head coach of his alma mater Lamar University, the University of Oklahoma (1980–1994) and Texas Christian University (1994–2002). His first head coaching job — from 1971-72 through 1972-73 — was at Southwestern University, Georgetown, Texas, where his teams were 12–16 and 19–8. From there he went to the University of North Texas to serve as assistant coach under Gene Robbins and for one year under Bill Blakeley.

The Lamar Cardinals and Lady Cardinals refers to the college athletics teams of Lamar University, in Beaumont, Texas. The Cardinals and Lady Cardinals teams compete in seventeen NCAA Division I sports as a member of the Southland Conference. The Cardinals rejoined the Southland after spending the 2021–22 athletic year in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).

The Lamar Cardinals basketball team represents Lamar University in NCAA Division I men's basketball competition. The Cardinals currently play in the Southland Conference following a return from the Western Athletic Conference on July 11, 2022. They were one of four programs, all from Texas, that left the Southland Conference on July 1, 2021, to join the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). Lamar left the Southland Conference for the second time, having initially joined at the league's formation in 1963, left in 1987, and returned in 1999. After one season in the WAC, Lamar returned to the Southland Conference. The Cardinals have played home games in the Montagne Center since 1984. The Lamar University basketball team is one of the school's most storied athletic programs. The Cardinals have competed in NCAA Tournament play eleven times and six times at the NCAA Division I level with the most recent appearance in the 2012 tournament. The 1979–80 team was one of the 1980 tournament's Sweet Sixteen teams. The Cardinals have also competed in four NIT tournaments. Heading into the 2014–2015 season Lamar had a 284–143 record in the Montagne Center. The Cardinals overall record going into the 2014–2015 season was 922–818.

Larry Dan Tidwell, is the head coach for the Dallas Christian College women’s basketball team. Before moving to Kansas, he served as women's basketball head coach from 2013–2018 at the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley, having been retained when his former institution, the University of Texas–Pan American (UTPA), merged with the University of Texas at Brownsville. Prior to this position, he was head coach of the Lamar Lady Cardinals basketball team for six seasons from 2007–2013, as well as the Lamar athletics director from June 2010 to May 2011.

The Lamar Cardinals football program represents Lamar University in college football at the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision level. The Cardinals are members of the Southland Conference and play their home games in the 16,000 seat Provost Umphrey Stadium. The Cardinals left the Southland Conference in July 2021 to join the Western Athletic Conference, which relaunched its football league at the FCS level during the 2021 season. After one season in the WAC, Lamar and the Southland Conference announced on July 11, 2022 Lamar's accelerated return to the Southland Conference effective immediately.

The Lamar Cardinals baseball team represents Lamar University and competes in the Southland Conference of the NCAA's Division I after officially rejoining the conference on July 11, 2022. The team is coached by head coach, Will Davis following Jim Gilligan's retirement at the end of the 2016 season. Except for five seasons (1987–1991), the Cardinals baseball team had been coached by Jim Gilligan since 1973. With over 1000 career wins as a head coach, Gilligan was one of the most winning coaches in NCAA history.

The Lamar Lady Cardinals softball team represents Lamar University in NCAA Division I college softball. The team competes in the Southland Conference. The Lady Cardinals are currently led by head coach Amy Hooks. The team played its home games at the off–campus Ford Park for the first two seasons following the program restart in 2013. The Lady Cardinals began playing home games at the Lamar Softball Complex located on the university's campus starting with the 2015 season.

Robin Harmony is an American college basketball coach. She currently serves as head coach of the College of Charleston Cougars women's basketball team. She previously was head coach at Lamar and St. Thomas University. Prior to that, she served as assistant coach and associate head coach at Miami Hurricanes. She split her stay at the University of Miami by serving as an assistant coach at Fairleigh Dickinson University for one season prior to her return to the Hurricanes.

The Lady Cardinals, led by third year head coach Robin Harmony, played their home games at the Montagne Center and are members of the Southland Conference. Qualifying for the conference tournament, the Lady Cardinals won the first game against Houston Baptist and were eliminated by McNeese State.

The Cardinals were led by third-year head coach Tic Price and played their home games at the Montagne Center in Beaumont, Texas as members of the Southland Conference. They defeated Southeastern Louisiana in the first round of the Southland tournament to advance to the quarterfinals where they lost to Stephen F. Austin. The Lady Cardinals, led by fourth year head coach Robin Harmony, played their home games at the Montagne Center and are members of the Southland Conference. They finished the season with a 21–6, 15–3 Southland play. They lost in the semifinals of the Southland women's tournament to Stephen F. Austin. They were invited to the WBI where they lost to Rice in the first round.

The Lady Cardinals, led by fifth year head coach Robin Harmony, played their home games at the Montagne Center and are members of the Southland Conference. The Lady Cardinals finished the season with an overall record of 22-8. They won the Southland Conference regular season championship were 17-1 in Southland play. After losing to Nicholls in a Southland Conference tournament semi-final game 68-74, the Lady Cardinals were an automatic qualifier to the WNIT. Their season ended with a first round 68-80 loss to the TCU Horned Frogs in the first round.

The Lamar Lady Cardinals soccer team represents Lamar University in NCAA Division I college soccer. The team, currently led by head coach Nathan Kogut, competes in the Southland Conference. The team's initial season was 2007. The Lady Cardinals' home stadium is the Lamar Soccer Complex located on the university's campus. The team began playing home games there starting with the 2009 season. The Lady Cardinals home stadium for the first two seasons was Cardinal Stadium now named Provost Umphrey Stadium.

The 2018–19 Lamar Lady Cardinals basketball team represented Lamar University during the 2018–19 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Lady Cardinals, led by sixth year head coach Robin Harmony, played their home games at the Montagne Center as members of the Southland Conference.The Lady Cardinals finished the 2018–19 season with an overall record of 24-7. They won the Southland Conference regular season championship were 17-1 in Southland play. After losing to Abilene Christian in the Southland Conference tournament semi-final game 79-88, the Lady Cardinals were an automatic qualifier to the WNIT. Their season ended with a first round 71-73 loss to the South Alabama in the first round. The loss ended a 42 home court win streak which started on November 16, 2016. Chastadie Barrs set the NCAA Division I steals record in the WNIT game at 192. She had tied the steals record of 191 the previous season.

The 2019–20 Lamar Lady Cardinals basketball team represented Lamar University during the 2019–20 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Lady Cardinals, led by first year head coach Aqua Franklin, played their home games at the Montagne Center as members of the Southland Conference. They finished the season 10–19, 6–14 in Southland play to finish in tenth place. They failed to qualify for the Southland women's tournament, which would eventually be cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The 2022–23 Lamar Lady Cardinals basketball team represented Lamar University during the 2022–23 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Lady Cardinals, led by fourth year head coach Aqua Franklin, played their home games at the Montagne Center in Beaumont, Texas as members of the Southland Conference. The Lady Cardinals finished the 2022–23 season with an overall record of 20–12 and 12–6 in conference play. After defeating McNeese in the second round and Texas A&M–Corpus Christi in the semi–final round of the 2023 Southland Conference women's basketball tournament, Lamar's season ended losing to Southeastern Louisiana in tournament championship game. Lamar entered the tournament as third seed.
