The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks basketball team is the women's basketball team that represents Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) in Nacogdoches, Texas. SFA rejoined the Southland Conference on July 1, 2024 after playing the previous 3 seasons in the WAC. [4]

Contents

The women's basketball team was part of the growth in popularity of women's intercollegiate basketball in the 1970s. Women's basketball at the college level was organized under the auspices of the AIAW in the early 1970s, at a time when competitive power was distributed among smaller colleges, such as Immaculata, Delta State, West Chester State and Wayland Baptist. The Ladyjacks were a consistent presence in the Top 20 rankings during the 1970s.

The Southland Conference, abbreviated as SLC, is a collegiate athletic conference which operates in the South Central United States. It participates in the NCAA's Division I for all sports; for football, it participates in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Gary Claude Blair is a retired women's basketball head coach. He coached for 37 years closing with Texas A&M Aggies women's basketball, who he coached from 2003 until his retirement in 2022. In his 37 years as a collegiate head coach, Blair only suffered two losing seasons, and has reached postseason play 28 times, including 23 NCAA Tournament appearances and Final Four appearances in 1998 with Arkansas and 2011 with Texas A&M. He led the Aggies to the NCAA national championship in 2011. He is listed in the top 35 of the all-time winningest NCAA Division I women's basketball coaches, and he is one of the few coaches to guide three different schools to national rankings and NCAA Tournament berths. Blair was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023.

The Sam Houston Bearkats are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent Sam Houston State University, located in Huntsville, Texas. Sam Houston's colors are orange and white. Austin teams participate in Division I as a member of the Southland Conference (SLC), having rejoined that conference on July 1, 2024 after three years in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). The football team competes in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision for football in the SLC. The Jacks, which participate in NCAA Division I college softball, were members of the Western Athletic Conference through the 2024 season, after which they will return to the Southland Conference after a three-season absence. The team is currently led by head coach Jeff Jackson and plays home games at SFA Softball Field.

The Ladyjacks were Southland Conference regular season co-champions with Lamar and were runner-up in the 2014 Southland Conference women's basketball tournament. They closed out post-season play as Runner-up in the 2014 Women's Basketball Invitational.

The 2014–15 Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks basketball team represented Stephen F. Austin University during the 2014–15 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Ladyjacks were led by fifth year head coach Brandon Schneider and played their home games at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. They are members of the Southland Conference. Winning the Southland Conference regular season championship, the Ladyjacks had an overall record of 23–8 and a conference record of 16–2. After losing the SLC tournament championship game to the Northwestern State Lady Demons, the Ladyjacks were an automatic qualifier to the 2015 Women's National Invitation Tournament where they met the TCU Horned Frogs. The season ended with an 80–85 first round loss to the Horned Frogs in Fort Worth, TX.

SFA Softball Field is the home stadium for the Division I (NCAA) Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks softball team. The stadium is located next to Jaycees Field, home of the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks baseball team, in Nacogdoches, Texas. The stadium has seating for 750 fans. Stephen F. Austin State University has a nineteen (19) year exclusive use lease on the stadium with the City of Nacogdoches, Texas starting in 2010. The university made several improvements to the preexisting city softball field including a new playing surface, a warning track, a Daktronics electronic scoreboard, new dugouts, windscreens, a new grandstand, an expanded press box, and bullpens.

Stephen F. Austin won the tournament, claiming its 16th and final Southland Conference title, and received the Southland's automatic bid to the 2021 NCAA tournament. The 2022 WAC women's basketball tournament was the postseason women's basketball tournament for the Western Athletic Conference during the 2021–22 season. All games were played at Orleans Arena in Paradise, Nevada, from March 8 to 12, 2022. Regular-season champion Stephen F. Austin, in its first WAC season after moving from the Southland Conference following the 2020–21 season, also won the tournament, receiving the WAC's automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA tournament.
