Al Mujahidi (born 1 January 1943) [1] is a Bangladeshi poet. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2003 by the Government of Bangladesh for his contribution to literature. [2]

Career

Mujahidi started publishing poems in 1952 and as of 2004 has published 52 books of poems. He has been the literary editor of The Daily Ittefaq. [2]

In July 2014, Mujahidi fell ill due to diabetes and high blood pressure. [3]

In March 2019, Mujahidi attended a memorial meeting in Dhaka recalling the life and works of the poet Al Mahmud. [4]

Kazi Nazrul Islam, popularly known as Nazrul, was a Bengali poet, writer, musician, and is revered as the national poet of Bangladesh. Regarded as one of the greatest poets in Bengali literature, Nazrul produced a large body of poetry, music, messages, novels, and stories with themes that included equality, justice, anti-imperialism, humanity, rebellion against oppression and religious devotion. Nazrul Islam's activism for political and social justice as well as writing a poem titled as "Bidrohī", meaning "the rebel" in Bengali, earned him the title of "Bidrohī Kôbi". His compositions form the avant-garde music genre of Nazrul Gīti.

Shamsur Rahman was a Bangladeshi poet, columnist and journalist. A prolific writer, Rahman produced more than sixty books of poetry collection and is considered a key figure in Bengali literature from the latter half of the 20th century. He was regarded as the unofficial poet laureate of Bangladesh. Major themes in his poetry and writings include liberal humanism, human relations, romanticised rebellion of youth, the emergence of and consequent events in Bangladesh, and opposition to religious fundamentalism.

Mir Abdus Shukur Al Mahmud was a Bangladeshi poet, novelist, and short-story writer. He is considered one of the greatest Bengali poets to have emerged in the 20th century. His work in Bengali poetry is dominated by his frequent use of regional dialects. In the 1950s he was among those Bengali poets who were outspoken in their writing on such subjects as the events of the Bengali Language Movement, nationalism, political and economical repression, and the struggle against the West Pakistani government.

"Ekusher Gaan", more popularly known as "Amar Bhaier Rokte Rangano" is a Bengali song written by Abdul Gaffar Choudhury to mark the Bengali Language Movement in 1952 East Pakistan. It was first published anonymously in the last page of a newspaper with the headline Ekusher Gaan, but was later published in Ekushey's February edition.

Bangla Desh – A Voice of a New Nation was an anthology of poems published in 1971, when the people of the-then East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, was fighting the war of independence against the occupation army of West Pakistan. It was a collection of seventy poems by fifty poets, all translated from Bengali into English by Pritish Nandy. It was stated in the credit page that 'The translator's royalty from the sale of this book will be donated to the Bangla Desh Assistance Fund'. Notably Bangladesh emerged as an independent state on 16 December 1971.

He is called "Father of Bangladeshi theatre" and "Natyaguru" of Bangladesh. He was awarded the Bangla Academy Award in 1961, merely a year after its inception.
