Independent agencies of the United States federal government are agencies that exist outside the federal executive departments and the Executive Office of the President. In a narrower sense, the term refers only to those independent agencies that, while considered part of the executive branch, have regulatory or rulemaking authority and are insulated from presidential control, usually because the president's power to dismiss the agency head or a member is limited.

The Election Assistance Commission (EAC) is an independent agency of the United States government created by the Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA). The Commission serves as a national clearinghouse and resource of information regarding election administration. It is charged with administering payments to states and developing guidance to meet HAVA requirements, adopting voluntary voting system guidelines, and accrediting voting system test laboratories and certifying voting equipment. It is also charged with developing and maintaining a national mail voter registration form.
The United States Maritime Commission (MARCOM) was an independent executive agency of the U.S. federal government that was created by the Merchant Marine Act of 1936, which was passed by Congress on June 29, 1936, and was abolished on May 24, 1950. The commission replaced the United States Shipping Board which had existed since World War I. It was intended to formulate a merchant shipbuilding program to design and build five hundred modern merchant cargo ships to replace the World War I vintage vessels that comprised the bulk of the United States Merchant Marine, and to administer a subsidy system authorized by the Act to offset the cost differential between building in the U.S. and operating ships under the American flag. It also formed the United States Maritime Service for the training of seagoing ship's officers to man the new fleet.

He is also a lawyer, unsuccessful 2005 Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, former United States Coast Guard officer, and a retired officer of the United States Naval Reserve. He was confirmed as Maritime Administrator by the Senate on August 3, 2006.

For 15 years thereafter, he was Chief Federal Defender of the Legal Aid & Defender Association of Detroit from 1979 to 1994. When he was appointed to be a federal judge, he became the first federal defender to be appointed to the federal bench. He was also a Professor and Assistant Dean at Wayne State University Law School, and an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Michigan Law School.

He stayed on with the Commission under the administration of Donald J. Trump during the first year of President Trump’s term. In January 2018, Mr. Doyle became the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of the Dredging Contractors of America. On July 22, 2020, Mr. Doyle was appointed by Maryland Governor Larry Hogan as the Executive Director of the Maryland Port Administration where he serves as the chief executive of the Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore.
Carl Whitney Bentzel is an American attorney and political advisor serving as a commissioner of the Federal Maritime Commission. Nominated by President Donald Trump on November 21, 2019, he was sworn in on December 9, 2019. His term is set to expire in 2024.
