Alan Arthur Reid (born 29 January 1956) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon and Geelong in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He also played for East Fremantle in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL). [1]

Reid, who came from Coorow, was a member of East Fremantle's 1974 premiership team. [2] Reid began his professional career at 17 years old. He represented Western Australia in an interstate fixture against Victoria at Subiaco Oval in 1977, which they won by 94 points, to record their first ever "State of Origin" victory. [3] [4]

A wingman, Reid had a strong debut season at Essendon in 1979, when he averaged over 20 disposals from his 16 appearances and polled nine Brownlow Medal votes. [5] Only Terry Daniher polled more votes for Essendon that year. Injury restricted him to seven games in 1980, but he was a regular again in 1981, playing 18 games. [5] [6] His only appearances in 1982 came late in the season, due to an ankle injury. [5] In 1983 he played only in round two, then got a clearance to Geelong, where he played seven games. [5] He finished his VFL career on 52 games. [5] Despite Essendon making the finals in three seasons that Reid played, 1979, 1981 and 1982, he never got to participate in a finals series. [5]

He moved to China in 1985 and has lived there since. [4] A University of Western Australia graduate, Reid worked at the Australian Embassy in Beijing as Minister Commercial and Senior Trade Commissioner then at Fosters China Limited as chief operating officer, during the 1990s. [7] He is currently the managing director of Intercedent (Beijing) Ltd.

Rivalries in the Australian Football League exist between many teams, most of which typically draw large crowds and interest regardless of both teams' positions on the ladder. The AFL encourages the building of such rivalries, as a method of increasing publicity for the league, to the point of designating one round each year as "Rivalry Round" when many of these match-ups are held on the one weekend. Whilst some rivalries, such as between teams from adjacent areas, are still strong, the designation of an entire round of fixtures as a Rivalry Round is often criticised due to some arbitrary match-ups, or ignoring stronger and more recent rivalries.

At age 27 and after a six and a half season career with South Fremantle in the West Australian Football League which included a club best and fairest award, Pickett was drafted by Richmond with the 13th selection in the 2019 mid-season rookie draft. He won the Norm Goss Memorial Medal as best on ground during Richmond's reserves side's premiership in 2019 before making his debut in a victorious AFL grand final the following week. Pickett was the first player to debut in a VFL/AFL grand final in 67 years and the first to win a premiership in his debut game since 1926. He became a two-time premiership winner with Richmond's grand final victory in 2020, earning the second honour in just his 20th game at AFL level.
