Albany joined Division I in 1999 and spent two years as an independent before joining the America East Conference. Albany played in Division III and Division II from 1950 until 1998.

Sports in Massachusetts have a long history with both amateur athletics and professional teams. Most of the major professional teams have won multiple championships in their respective leagues. Massachusetts teams have won 6 Stanley Cups, 18 NBA Championships, 6 Super Bowls, and 10 World Series. The New England Revolution won the MLS Supporter's Shield in 2021. Early basketball and volleyball was created in Massachusetts, which homes the Basketball Hall of Fame (Springfield), and the Volleyball Hall of Fame (Holyoke). Massachusetts also houses the Cape Cod Baseball League. It is also home to prestigious sports events such as the Boston Marathon and the Head of the Charles Regatta. The Falmouth Road Race in running and the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic in bicycle racing are also very popular events with long histories.
The Albany Great Danes men's basketball team is the basketball team that represent the University at Albany, State University of New York in Albany, New York. The school's team currently competes in the America East Conference and plays its home games at SEFCU Arena. The team played in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament in 2006, 2007, 2013, 2014, and 2015. They also made the CIT in 2016 and 2017, and are currently coached by Dwayne Killings.
The Stony Brook Seawolves are the intercollegiate athletics teams that represent Stony Brook University (SBU) in Stony Brook, New York. The 2009–10 Minnesota Golden Gophers women's hockey team represented the University of Minnesota during the 2009–10 NCAA Division I women's hockey season. The Golden Gophers were coached by Brad Frost in his third season and played their home games at Ridder Arena. The University of Minnesota hosted the 2010 NCAA Division I Women's Ice hockey Tournament's championship game on March 21, 2010 at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis. The 2018–19 Albany Great Danes women's basketball team represented the University at Albany, SUNY during the 2018–19 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Great Danes, led by first year head coach Colleen Mullen, played their home games at SEFCU Arena and were members of the America East Conference. They finished the season 13–18, 9–7 in America East play to finish in fourth place. They defeated Binghamton in the quarterfinals before losing to Maine in the semifinals of the America East women's tournament.
