Albany joined Division I in 1999 and spent two years as an independent before joining the America East Conference. Albany played in Division III and Division II from 1950 until 1998.

The school's team currently competes in the America East Conference and plays its home games at SEFCU Arena. The team played in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament in 2006, 2007, 2013, 2014, and 2015. They also made the CIT in 2016 and 2017, and are currently coached by Dwayne Killings.
