Albert Cano Smit (born in Geneva, Switzerland on October 4, 1996) [1] is a Spanish-Dutch[ citation needed ] classical pianist. He has won first prize at the prestigious 2017 Naumburg International Piano Competition [2] and the Young Concert Artists Competition in 2019. [3] [4]

Early life

Cano Smit began his collegiate studies with Ory Shihor at the Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles. [5] He was then accepted to the Juilliard School in New York City where he pursued his graduate studies with Robert McDonald and received the Arthur Rubinstein Prize in Piano. Other notable mentors include Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Richard Goode and Stephen Hough. [6]

Career

Cano Smit first came to public attention at the 2017 Montreal International Piano Competition, where he placed as a finalist. For his performances, he was lauded as "a great artist in the making" who had committed a "virtual near-suicide" with his finals concerto choice. [7] He won his first major competition when he was awarded the first prize at the Naumburg International Piano Competition in November 2017. His second major competition win came in November 2019 at the Young Concert Artists Competition, where he was the recipient of 6 special prizes.[ citation needed ]

Since his victory at the Naumburg Competition, he has performed solo recitals at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, [8] Herbst Theatre in San Francisco, [9] Zankel Halls, Kennedy Center in Washington DC, [10] L'Auditori de Barcelona, Wissembourg Festival in France, Rheingau Musik Festival in Germany, and Grand Banlam Theater in Xiamen. He has given concerto performances with international ensembles, including the Boca del Río Philharmonic, [12] Seattle Symphony Orchestra, [13] Montreal Symphony Orchestra, [7] Barcelona Symphony and Catalonia National Orchestra, [14] San Diego Symphony [15] as well as the Las Vegas Philharmonic.[ citation needed ]

In October 2019 he made his Carnegie Hall debut, [16] [6] where he world premiered Stephen Hough's Partita for Piano, a piece commissioned for Hough by the Walter W. Naumburg Foundation.

He currently resides in New York City. [10]

Konstantin Alekseyevich Soukhovetski was born into a family of artists, and began playing the piano at the age of four. Kirill Gerstein is a Russian-American concert pianist. He is the sixth recipient of the Gilmore Artist Award. Born in the former Soviet Union, Gerstein is an American citizen based in Berlin. Between 2007-2017, he led piano classes at the Stuttgart Musik Hochschule. In 2018, he took up the post of Professor of Piano at the Hanns Eisler Hochschule in Berlin in addition to the Kronberg Academy’s Sir András Schiff Performance Programme for Young Artists.

The Walter W. Naumburg Foundation sponsors competitions and provides awards for young classical musicians in North America. Founded in 1925, it operates the prestigious Naumburg Competition.

Sergei Polusmiak born in 1951 in Kharkiv, Ukraine is a Ukrainian Pianist "Merited Artist of Ukraine". He graduated from Kharkiv Music College in 1969 and from Kharkiv Conservatory in 1975, where he studied with Regina Horowitz, sister of Vladimir Horowitz. in 1978 he received the Post Graduate Diploma at Kiev Conservatory, Ukraine and in 1981 completed Advanced Studies at Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory, Russia. From 1975 to 1998 Sergei Polusmiak was teaching at Kharkiv Conservatory and at the Kharkiv Special Music School for Gifted Children Sergei Polusmiak started his professional career as a music educator and as a concert pianist by teaching, giving master classes, playing solo piano recitals, chamber music recitals and as a soloist with symphony orchestras. For his contribution as a concert pianist Sergei Polusmiak was awarded the title of "Merited Artist of Ukraine" by the President of Ukraine. in 1996 Sergei Polusmiak became a Full Professor of piano at Kharkiv Institute of Arts.

Roger Robinson ("Trey") Wright III is an American classical concert pianist. He is also a Scrabble player who won the United States National Scrabble Championship in 2004.

Frank Xin Huang is a Chinese-born American violinist and teacher. Since 2015 he has been the concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic. Previous to his position in New York, Huang was the first violinist of the Ying Quartet and a professor of violin and chamber music at the Eastman School of Music, then served as the concertmaster of the Houston Symphony from 2010 to 2015. He has won several international music competitions, most notably the 2003 Naumburg Competition. Huang has concertized widely as a soloist, and his debut recording on Naxos was critically acclaimed.

Peng-Peng Gong, formerly known as his stage name Peng Peng, is a Chinese classical composer and pianist born on July 3, 1992. Described by The Washington Post as an artist "with the confidence of a weathered veteran and a welcome unbridled quality to his playing", he has established himself as one of the most gifted young artists of his generation. At 18, he has become an internationally active concert pianist and a six-time American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers National Award-winning composer in consecutive years since 2006. He was among the youngest pianists to be officially signed to the artist roster of the renowned Opus 3 Artists in 2007 at age 14, and the youngest composer to be signed by the [Lauren Keiser Music Publishing] in 2009 at age 16. Since 2005, he concertized and toured intensely in the North America, South America, Europe, and China, appearing in over a hundred solo and orchestral engagements. The Naumburg International Piano Competition is the name given to all the piano competitions sponsored by the Walter W. Naumburg Foundation. It is a competition for young pianists, of ages 17 to 32, organized in New York City, United States since 1926. It is one of the oldest music competitions in the world, and it has helped launch the career of some of the 20th century's greatest pianists, such as Jorge Bolet, William Kapell, Abbey Simon, Theodore Lettvin, Constance Keene, Adele Marcus, Kun-Woo Paik, Andre-Michel Schub and Stephen Hough, among many others.
