Alexander Albert Hunter, KBE (21 May 1920 - 27 August 1996) was a Belizean politician. He served as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 8 November 1974 to 27 July 1979. [1] [2]
Hunter was born in 1920 as the son of Laura Mary,née Reyes (born 25. March 1885 - 1 September 1924),to Alexander John Hunter (died 7 July 1924). He was born in Belize City,Belize. Fred Hunter was his half-brother. [1]
Hunter graduated from the St. John's College in Belize City to Regis College in Denver,Colorado. He studied radiation physics at Queen's University in Kingston,Canada. [1]
In the 1961 parliamentary election in British Honduras,he was a candidate for the PUP in the constituency of Fort George and won the election with 60.2% of the vote against Herbert Fuller of the NIP and Denbigh Jeffery of the CDP. From the 1965 election (54.3% of the vote against Helen Taylor,NIP) to the 1969 election (50.9% against Dean Lindo,NIP). He served under Prime Minister George Cadle Price as Minister for Natural Resources and later as Minister for Industry. [1]
Hunter was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the Diplomatic Service and Overseas List of the 1976 New Years Honours Lists.

George Joseph Bates was a member of the United States House of Representatives from the state of Massachusetts. Born in Salem,Massachusetts,he served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives 1918–1924. Bates was then elected Mayor of Salem in 1924 at the age of 33. He served as mayor until 1937,at which time he was sworn in as a Republican member of the House in the 75th Congress. During World War II,he was an interventionist. After the fall of France and before the Nazi invasion of Soviet Russia,Britain was effectively fighting the Nazis alone,throughout this time period Bates was outspokenly pro-British,and he advocated aiding Britain in any way possible,in order to help in their war against the Nazis. In 1941 he was one of the few Republicans to abstain from voting on the 1941 Lend Lease Act. Bates voted in favor of arming merchant ships. Bates made good on his campaign promises and voted to increase lend-lease funding to the British military as well as food aid for British civilians during the Blitz. Bates was subsequently re-elected six times.
