Karl Wilhelm Alexander Ekman (born 1984) is a Swedish ballet dancer and choreographer. His choreographies have been performed by Les Ballets de Monte Carlo, the Boston Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, the Semperoper Ballett, the Nederlands Dans Theater, the Norwegian National Ballet, the Royal Swedish Ballet, the São Paulo City Ballet , the Sydney Dance Company, and the Wiener Staatsballett. For some of them he has designed sets and costumes or composed the music. [1]
Ekman trained at the Royal Swedish Ballet school in Stockholm. At 15 he danced at Europa danse in France and discovered many international choreographers. At 16 he began his professional dance career and joined the Royal Swedish Ballet. One year later he moved to The Netherlands to join the Netherlands Dance theatre 2 in Den Haag, and after that Cullberg Ballet in Stockholm. After 5 years as a professional dancer when he was 21 he decided to become a choreographer on full-time and began his freelancing career. [2] [3]
He was a host of the Swedish radio program Sommar in 2015. [4] In 2013 he received an Olivier Award nomination for his choreography of the original work Cacti. His other notable works include Tyll, A Swan Lake, and Episode 31.
Ekman trained at the Royal Swedish Ballet School from 1994 to 2001. He danced at the Royal Swedish Opera from 2001 to 2002 and then at the Nederlands Dans Theater II from 2002 to 2005. He danced for the Cullberg Ballet from 2005 to 2006, where he made his debut as a choreographer. [5]
In 2006, when he was 22, he wrote “Flockwork” for the Netherlands Dance Theatre. [6] He has created around 50 pieces for dance companies around the world. [7] In 2008 Ekman collaborated with Swedish Choreographer Mats Ek at the Stads Theatre in Stockholm. He created video content for the play Hållplats. [8]
His work “Cacti” (2010) has been performed by 20 dance companies worldwide. After struggling with becoming reviewed in public, Ekman decided to create a piece about opinions and our need to criticize each other. A comment on the “high browed snobbish art world”. [9] In 2012 Ekman began his collaboration with Swedish Composer Mikael Karlsson. Together they have created around 8 pieces together. Including “A swan lake”, “Midsummer night's dream”, “COW” and “PLAY”.
Ekman created A Swan Lake in 2014 but this time in his own version. It received a lot of response from around the world. He filled 6000 liters of water at stage which created a real lake. [10] In 2015 Ekman created Midsummer night's dream in his own version at the Royal Swedish Ballet which became an instant hit with the audience and critics. Later this production was captured and showed on both Swedish and French national TV. [11] In 2017 Ekman created “KREATIV” together with Swedish Production Company “Anna and Paul”. This is A documentary / study interviewing scientists, artists and creators. [12] The documentary was broadcast on Swedish National Television (SVT) as well as the San Francisco Dance film festival in 2018. Ekman Created “PLAY” for The Paris Opera Ballet in 2017. It is a full evening work which played for 25 sold-out performances in December 2017 at the famous Garnier Opera in Paris. PLAY has also been captured for the Screen and broadcast on Swedish Television. [13]
In 2018, he danced his own choreography in Thoughts on Bergman at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. [14]
In 2024 Alexander Ekman was chosen to be the Artistic Director and Choreographer of the opening ceremony for the Paralympic games in Paris. [15]
A Swan Lake is a full-length work created by Ekman. It is created for The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet. Ekman created it together with Henrik Vibskov. The music is composed by Mikael Karlsson. Ekman created A Swan Lake on stage with company by filling the stage with 5,000 liters of water. [16] [17]
Midsummer Night's Dream ballet was choreographed by Alexander Ekman in 2015 and directed by Mikael Jönsson. The music was created by Mikael Karlsson. Ekman created it for the Royal Swedish Ballet inspired by the customary Swedish Midsummer Eve festival. It has been described as a free interpretation of Shakespeare's play. [18] [19]
COW is another ballet by Ekman. It features eleven successive scenes. In this ballet Ekman related human behavior in everyday life to the behavior of Cows. It is composed by Mikael Karlsson. Cow is choreographed by Alexander Ekman himself. Music was created by Mikael Karlsson, costumes by Henrik Vibskov, light by Fabio Antoci video by TM Rives. [20]
Ekman created 'PLAY' together with Karlsson which creates a unique bond between dance and music. Play was created for the Paris Opera Ballet. It is a dance music theatre piece that recalls the age of childhood. It is written and directed by Ekman himself. [21]
Ekman created Cacti in 2010. It is one of the successful pieces. In Cacti 16 dancers together creates rhythms. In 2010, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands gave Cacti as a gift to the royalties of Norway on a state visit in Oslo. In 2010 it was nominated for best new dance production for Swan award in Netherlands. [22] [20] [23]
Swan Lake, Op. 20, is a ballet composed by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1875–76. Despite its initial failure, it is now one of the most popular of all ballets.
Violette Verdy was a French ballerina, choreographer, teacher, and writer who worked as a dance company director with the Paris Opera Ballet in France and the Boston Ballet in the United States. From 1958 to 1977 she was a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet where she performed in the world premieres of several works created specifically for her by choreographers George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins. She was Distinguished Professor of Music (Ballet) at the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University, in Bloomington, and the recipient of two medals from the French government.

Mats Ek is a Swedish dance and ballet choreographer, dancer and stage director. He was the manager of the Cullberg Ballet from 1985 to 1993.
The Hamburg Ballet is a ballet company based in Hamburg, Germany. Since 1973, it has been directed by the American dancer and choreographer John Neumeier. In addition there is a ballet school, School of the Hamburg Ballet, established in 1978. The performances of the Hamburg Ballet are usually held at the Hamburg State Opera, while the training and education facility is the "Ballettzentrum Hamburg – John Neumeier".

In a survey of critics, the German magazine "ballett international / tanz aktuell" named him "most promising young choreographer" in 2001. From 2004 to 2007, he was director of the Bern Ballet; he worked as a freelance choreographer until 2014 when he took over as ballet director of the Saarländisches Staatstheater.

Heinz Spoerli is a Swiss dance maker, internationally known. After a long career as a ballet dancer and company director, he is now widely considered to be one of the foremost European choreographers of his time.
Vienna State Ballet, Wiener Staatsballett, is considered one of the world's top ballet companies. It was formerly named the Vienna State Opera Ballet as it is based at the Vienna State Opera building. In 2005 the ballets of the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Volksoper were merged under the name Das Ballett der Wiener Staatsoper und Volksoper and Gyula Harangozo became the artistic director. On 1 September 2010, a further name change was accompanied by a change in leadership. Manuel Legris, former principal dancer with the Paris Opera Ballet, succeeded as the artistic director.
Giovanni Bucchieri is a dancer and musician from Linköping, Sweden. He established himself early as a prolific dancer, specialised in breakdance and in Street dance. At the age of 15 he moved to Stockholm. Together with his longtime companion Aleksander Maksic he traveled to New York at the age of 16. There they eagerly took part in the frantic club life of New York. It was here that Bucchieri's love for Vogue was discovered, at various ballroom dances.
Liam Scarlett was a British choreographer who was an artist in residence with The Royal Ballet and artistic associate with Queensland Ballet. He also choreographed new works for Ballet Black, Miami City Ballet, Norwegian National Ballet, the BalletBoyz, English National Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Royal New Zealand Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, Polish National Ballet, and the Royal Ballet School.
Irina Laurenova was born in Ros', Belarus and studied at the Minsk Ballet Academy. She has been dancing with the Royal Swedish Ballet since 2004 and in 2007 was appointed second soloist. Prior to her employment in Sweden, Laurenova worked with the Bolshoi Ballet in Poznań, Poland, the Ballet Theatre in Minsk and the Ballet Theatre of Trier, Germany. In addition, she has performed as a guest dancer in appearances and festivals throughout the world, including: Belgium, Canada, China, France, Hong Kong, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and Thailand.
Gina Tse is an English ballerina of British-Chinese descent, and first soloist of the Royal Swedish Ballet. Beginning in the 2012–2013 season, she was elevated to the principal dancer of the company.
Krzysztof Pastor is a Polish dancer, choreographer and ballet director. He was resident choreographer with the Dutch National Ballet in Amsterdam from 2003 to 2017, director of the Polish National Ballet in Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera in Warsaw since 2009 and at the same time from 2011 until 2020 was the artistic director of the ballet of the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre in Vilnius.
Mikael Karlsson is a Swedish composer based in New York City. He grew up in Gävle, Sweden and moved to NYC in 2001 to study and he took a master's degree in classical composition at the Aaron Copland School of Music 2005.
Lea Elizabeth Ved is an American contemporary dancer and choreographer. She was a second soloist contemporary dancer at the Royal Swedish Ballet, dancing with the company from 2016 until 2018. Ved currently dances with Nederlands Dans Theater.
