Alexander Wayne Watson Jr. (born September 24, 1969) [1] is an American serial killer. Initially convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the 1994 murder of a woman in Forestville, Maryland, Watson's DNA was later matched to three additional killings in Anne Arundel County committed years before. [2] For these crimes, he pleaded guilty and received four additional life imprisonment terms. [3]

Murders

The first murder occurred on October 8, 1986, when 34-year-old mother of two Boontem Anderson was killed in her Gambrills home. On that day, she was on sick leave from her job at Fort Meade, with her nude body being found by her fiancé's 11-year-old son in the bathtub. [2] She had been sexually assaulted, stabbed and strangled to death. Watson, a minor at the time, lived only a couple of miles away, and was acquainted with the family via their son, with whom he worked at a fast-food restaurant. [4]

On May 23, 1988, 37-year-old Mary Elaine Shereika was out on an early morning jog before going to work, but failed to appear at her workplace. Her fiancé reported her missing, and later in the day, a Gambrills farmer plowing his rye field found her partially clothed body. She had been raped, stabbed and finally strangled, with a bloodied sock found next to the body. [2] Like with the Anderson case, Watson lived close to her and was acquainted with the victim. On that morning, while he was using drugs at the park, Shereika passed by him. Deciding that he could get away with murder a second time, he caught up with her, dragged her to the field and proceeded to kill Mary. [4]

By the early 1990s, Watson married and had a child, moving with his family to the Southgate apartment complex in Glen Burnie. [2] On January 15, 1993, 14-year-old Lisa Kathleen Haenel, a ninth-grade student at the local Old Mill High School, vanished while walking her usual path to school. The girl was reported missing by her mother and a search was initiated, with the mother's boyfriend finding Lisa's body ditched in a ravine behind the school's premises the following morning. [2] She was almost completely nude save for a sock, with stab wounds and strangulation marks on her body. Unlike the previous victims, Haenel was not sexually assaulted, so seminal fluid could not be collected, but the killer's DNA was still obtained via an unsmoked Newport-brand cigarette found close to the body, which had traces of Lisa's blood on the burn end and saliva from the murderer at the other. On June 13, 1994, Watson committed his last murder, killing 37-year-old office manager Debra Cobb during a robbery of her workplace in Forestville. [5] He was arrested as a suspect not long after, as he worked in the same office plaza, pleading guilty to first-degree murder at his trial, blaming his addiction to crack cocaine for the brutal crime. [6] Receiving a life imprisonment sentence in December 1994, he was sent to the Jessup Correctional Institution, without being connected to the other killings until over a decade later.

Exposure

Using the advancements in DNA technology, the evidence collected for the three crime scenes was entered into CODIS, and in due time, the samples linked back to Watson. [6] [5] In 2004, he was charged with the three killings, and at his 2007 trial, he pleaded guilty to all of charges to avoid a possible death sentence. [4] When queried about any other crimes he might have committed, Watson denied it, saying that only these were his doing. [3] He was sentenced to four additional life imprisonment terms, to be served concurrently with his previous one, and he was moved to the North Branch Correctional Institution, where he remains incarcerated. Jorge Avila-Torrez is an American serial killer and rapist. A resident of Zion, Illinois, Avila-Torrez murdered two girls who lived in his neighborhood in 2005 and later murdered a female Naval officer in 2009 at Joint Base Myer–Henderson Hall. He was sentenced to death by the federal government for that crime as well as receiving a 100-year sentence for the Illinois murders.

Alfred J. Gaynor is an American serial killer and rapist who committed a series of nine murders in the city of Springfield, Massachusetts from 1995 to 1998. For these crimes, Gaynor was subsequently given four sentences of life imprisonment without parole.

The Denver Prostitute Killer was an American serial killer responsible for the murder of at least 17 women and girls in Denver and its various suburbs between 1975 and 1995. In 2005, based upon results from DNA profiling, it was determined that the most likely killer was Billy Edwin Reid who was previously arrested and charged with the 1989 murder of Lannell Williams and Lisa Kelly. Reid was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for those specific murders. The killings were grouped together only in 2008 – until then, each of these crimes was considered to have been committed by different people.

James David Martin is an American serial killer who strangled three people across three states between 1989 and 2005. While serving a sentence for the murder of his wife in Pennsylvania, he was connected via DNA profiling to a cold case murder in The Bronx, for which he was later given an additional 20 years imprisonment.

Dellmus Charles Colvin is an American serial killer who, during his employment as a truck driver, kidnapped and murdered at least six women in Ohio between 2000 and 2005. Richard Jabulani Nyauza is a South African serial killer and rapist who murdered 16 women in and around the Rossway Quarry. Shortly after becoming infected with HIV in 2002, Nyauza murdered his first five victims near Olievenhoutbosch. Later that year, he was arrested for attempting to rape a child, but was released in 2005 after being found not guilty. Weeks later, he began murdering women again in an area about 2.8 kilometres away from the area the original murders occurred in. Nyauza murdered 11 more women until his arrest in 2006. Following his trial, he was found guilty and given 16 life sentences as well as an additional 140 years imprisonment.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Johnny Avalos</span> American serial killer and rapist (1986-)

Johnny Joe Avalos is an American serial killer who raped and fatally strangled four women and a teenage girl in San Antonio, Texas, between 2012 and 2015. He strangled each victim with his hands, and also used plastic bags in three instances. He was connected to the murders through DNA and subsequently arrested in April 2015. Three years later, he pleaded guilty to the crimes and received two concurrent life sentences without the possibility of parole. He is now imprisoned at a maximum security penitentiary.

Michael Patrick Ihde was an American murderer, rapist, and possible serial killer who was convicted of raping and murdering at least two women in the states of California and Washington between 1984 and 1986. Sentenced to death in the former, he died on death row in 2005.
