Alexis Mendoza (born 1972) is a Cuban artist, writer and independent curator, based in New York City. His multidisciplinary work focuses on painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing and installation. His art explores the transitioning and overlapping of colors as a metaphor for the Afro-Cuban customs, rituals and traditions. [1]
Mendoza was born in Havana City, Cuba. His past education includes the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro (1988), he graduated in Art History from Havana University (1994), and completed an Internship in Fine Art Conservation at the National Museum of Fine Arts of Havana (1992–93). [2] He has lived and worked in New York City since 1995.
Mendoza has exhibited his artworks in museums and galleries in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, England, France, Germany, Mexico, Netherlands, Peru, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, and United States.

He is a co-founder and co-creator of The Bronx Latin American Art Biennial [9] which showcase the works of Latinx artists from New York and abroad. [10] [11] [12]
In 2019 the art biennial evolved to the New York Latin American Art Triennial which explored issues such as migration, women's rights and social justice while celebrating Hispanic heritage. [13] [14] [15]
In December 2020 he curated and participated in an outdoor art show in Upper Manhattan titled "For the Love of Art: An Appropriated Intentions Exhibition". The works of 20 artists were hanged on a vacant fence after reusing advertising banners as canvas. Participating artists included: Nelson Álvarez, Diego Anaya, Ed Andrade, Pablo Caviedes, Franck de las Mercedes, Wildriana del Jesús Paulino, Darwin Erazo, Alex “Fdez” Fernández, Julia Justo, Carlos Jesús Martínez Domínguez-FEEGZ, Ricardo Llano, Rafaela Luna, Paola Martínez, Alexis Mendoza, Yani Monzón, Naivy Pérez, Yumarlis Rodríguez, Moses Ros, Luis Stephenberg and José Luis Tejeda. In 2021 Mendoza co-curated with Anderson M. Pilgrim the exhibition "Social Reckoning" at the Abrazo Interno Gallery and Teatro Latea both located at the Clemente Soto Velez Cultural and Educational Center. The show was organized in collaboration with NYU and Univision and commemorated Martin Luther King Jr and his influence on the cultural heritage of the Americas and the world. Participating artists included: Carla Armour, Diogenes Ballester, Tanda Francis, Michael Kelly Williams, Ademola Olugebefola, TAFA, Nelson Álvarez, Ed Andrade, Diego Anaya, Pablo Caviedes, Wildriana de Jesús Paulino, Franck de las Mercedes, Darwin Erazo, Alex “Fdez” Fernández, Julia Justo, Rafaela Luna, Yani Monzón, Naivy Pérez, Moses Ros, and José Luis Tejeda. He is the founding member of BxArts Factory [21] and is part of the BX200, [22] a curated selection of artists identified with The Bronx.
Mendoza is also the author of the books Latin America, The Culture and the New Men;Objective Reference of Painting: The Work of Ismael Checo, 1986-2006; and Reflections: The Sensationalism of the Art from Cuba, [23] all three published by Wasteland Press. He also authored "Rigo Peralta: Revelaciones de un Universo Mistico", [24] published by Argos Publications, Dominican Republic.

An exceptional prolific abstract painter with a refine style of paint, creativity and cultivated technique. Painter, founder and director of art schools and galleries, teacher of drawing and painting, he was an artist who travelled the world for solo exhibitions, or as a curator for Cuban painters art shows. His paintings are held in international and private collections in South and Central America and Caribbean islands, North America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Middle East.

José Braulio Bedia Valdés is a Cuban painter currently residing in Florida.
Juan Carlos Alom is a Cuban photographer. Alom is a photographer, documentary and experimental filmmaker. His artistic career started in the 1990s in Havana.
Los Carpinteros is a Cuban artist collective founded in Havana in 1992 by Marco Antonio Castillo Valdes, Dagoberto Rodriguez Sanchez, and Alexandre Arrechea. In 1994 they decided "to renounce the notion of individual authorship and refer back to an older guild tradition of artisans and skilled laborers” in an attempt to emphasize their belief that art always, to some extent, involves collaboration. Both Valdes and Sanchez were born in Cuba and live and work between Havana and Madrid. They have exhibited in Cuba, Europe and North America, and have received a number of awards.
Tania Bruguera is an artist and activist who focuses on installation and performance art. She lives in Cambridge where she works as head of media and performance at Harvard University. Bruguera has participated in numerous international exhibitions. her work is in the permanent collections of many institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art and Bronx Museum of the Arts and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Habana.
Coco Fusco is a Cuban-American interdisciplinary artist, writer, and curator whose work has been exhibited and published internationally. Fusco's work explores gender, identity, race, and power through performance, video, interactive installations, and critical writing.
Duke Riley is an American artist. Riley earned a BFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design, and a MFA in Sculpture from the Pratt Institute. He lives in Brooklyn, New York. He is noted for a body of work incorporating the seafarer's craft with nautical history, as well as the host of a series of illegal clambakes on the Brooklyn waterfront for the New York artistic community. Riley told the Village Voice that he has "always been interested in the space where water meets land in the urban landscape."
Gerardo Mosquera is a freelance curator, critic, art historian, and writer based in Havana, Cuba. He was one of the organizers of the first Havana Biennial in 1984 and remained central to the curatorial team until he resigned in 1989. Since then, his activity turned to be mainly international: he has been traveling, lecturing and curating exhibitions in more than 80 countries. Mosquera was adjunct curator at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, from 1995 to 2009. Since 1995 he is advisor in the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kusten in [Amsterdam]. His publications include several books on art and art theory, and more than 600 articles, reviews and essays have appeared in numerous magazines, including: Art Nexus, Cahiers, Lápiz, Neue Bildende Kunst, Oxford Art Journal, Poliester, Third Text. Among other volumes, Mosquera has edited Beyond the Fantastic: Contemporary Art Criticism from Latin America and co-edited Over Here: International Perspectives on Art and Culture. His theoretical essays – which have been influential in discussing art’s cultural dynamics in an internationalized world, and contemporary Latin American art – are dispersed in English, but have been collected in books in Caracas and Madrid in Spanish, and in Chinese in Beijing. Mosquera was the Artistic Director of PHotoEspaña, Madrid (2011–2013), the Chief Curator of the 4th Poly/Graphic San Juan Triennial (2015-2016), co-curator of the 3rd Documents, Beijing (2016) and co-curator of the Guangzhou Image Triennial (2021).

Carlos Alfonzo (1950–1991) was a Cuban-American painter known for his neo-impressionistic style. His work has been collected by Whitney Museum of American Art and Smithsonian Institution.
The Taller Boricua, in Manhattan, New York is a multidisciplinary cultural space founded in 1969 by Puerto Rican artists to promote the arts and culture of the Puerto Rican community in El Barrio/East Harlem, as well as to offer a platform to underrepresented and marginalized artists.
Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara is a Cuban performance artist and dissident, known for his public performances that openly criticize the Cuban government and its policies. A self-taught artist, Alcántara lives in the El Cerro neighborhood of Havana. Since 2018 Alcántara has been arrested dozens of times for his performances in violation of Decree 349, a Cuban law requiring artists to obtain advance permission for public and private exhibitions and performances.
Luis Marín is a Cuban Neo-expressionist painter and visual artist. He has been active internationally in the arts since the 1980s and is featured in the permanent collections of several prominent fine art institutions including the Museum of Latin American Art and Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale.
Pablo Caviedes was born in 1971 in Cotacachi, Ecuador and lives and works in New York City. He is a multidisciplinary artist who works across various media such as painting, video art, drawing, etching, installation and sculpture. He is considered part of the 21st Century US-Latino transcultural art-scene. His work focuses on social issues such as immigration, displacement and identity.
The Havana Film Festival New York (HFFNY) is a film festival, based in New York City, that screens cinema from across Latin America with a special focus on Cuba and its film industry. It is a project of The American Friends of the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization with the mission of building cultural bridges between the United States and Cuba through arts projects.
The New York Latin American Art Triennial is an event that takes place every three years. It is dedicated to presenting contemporary Latin American art in New York City.
