Alfred Bennett (born 13 November 1898; date of death unknown) was an English footballer who played as a goalkeeper for Nottingham Forest and Port Vale.

Career

Bennett played for Clowne Rising Star and Nottingham Forest, before joining Port Vale in May 1927. [1] Preferred to George Holdcroft and Howard Matthews, he played 24 Second Division appearances and played one FA Cup game in the 1927–28 season. [1] However, he was replaced by new signing Jack Prince, and after playing just 11 times in the 1928–29 season, he left The Old Recreation Ground on a free transfer in May 1929. [1]

The 1927–28 season was Port Vale's ninth consecutive season of football in the English Football League. They finished in ninth place, following three consecutive eighth-placed finishes in the previous campaigns. Vale were once again looking strong in the division, yet unable to find the consistency necessary to win promotion to the top-flight. Top scorer Wilf Kirkham managed 14 goals, a whole 27 short of his previous record-breaking tally. Still one of the most successful season's in their history, they would better this finish on only three occasions over the next 85 years.

Robert David Downes is an English former footballer, coach and manager. He started his playing career as a left back, later becoming a left winger. After starting his career at West Bromwich Albion, Downes played 470 games in the Football League for Peterborough United, Rochdale, Watford, Barnsley and Blackpool.
