Alfredo Juinio

Alfredo Lazarte Juinio was a civil engineer, educator, and public official of the Philippines. He served as the dean of the College of Engineering of the University of the Philippines. Alfredo Juinio Hall, the building that houses the National Engineering Center, is named after him. He was once described as "one of the country's most brilliant engineers."^[1]

Education

In 1939, Juinio graduated cum laude with a degree in civil engineering from the University of the Philippines where he became a member of the Beta Epsilon Fraternity. He then attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, from which he obtained his master's degree in civil engineering.

Career and Works

Prior to serving as college dean, Professor Alfredo T. Juinio headed the UP Diliman Office of Campus Planning (also known as the Campus Planning Committee). Two of the projects he undertook during his term were the construction of C.P. Garcia Avenue and the UP Gateway at the University Avenue.

Juinio, together with other UP engineering professors, became the structural engineers of the first thin-shell concrete dome in the Philippines for the UP Catholic Chapel, otherwise known as the Parish of the Holy Sacrifice.^[1] The structure is the country's first circular church with the altar in the middle^[1] and has been declared a historical landmark and cultural treasure by the National Historical Institute and the National Museum, respectively.

Juinio was appointed as the Minister of Public Works and Highways, as well as the administrator of the National Irrigation Administration. During his term, he headed the Upper Pampanga River Multipurpose Projects in Pantabangan, Nueva Ecija.

From 1970 to 1979, Juinio served as the dean of the UP College of Engineering. During his term, he initiated the establishment of the National Engineering Center building, as well as the formation of the UP Engineering Research and Development Foundation, Inc. (UPERDFI). Juinio was elected as the first chairman of the board, and went on to serve as UPERDFI president for thirty years.

Juinio was also the co-founder of the DCCD Engineering Corporation and a consultant to various government agencies.

Leandro V. Locsin was a Filipino architect, artist, and interior designer known for his use of concrete, floating volume and simplistic design in his various projects. An avid collector, he was fond of modern painting and Chinese ceramics. He was proclaimed a National Artist of the Philippines for Architecture in 1990 by the late President Corazon C. Aquino.

Alpha Omega Epsilon (ΑΩΕ) is a social and professional sorority for women in engineering and technical sciences. The sorority was founded by twenty-seven female engineering students at Marquette University on November 13, 1983, and four months later on March 22, 1984, it became a recognized organization on the Marquette University campus. The idea of uniting female engineers and technical scientists of all curricula as Alpha Omega Epsilon has spread to other campuses. As a result, there are currently forty-eight active chapters of the sorority. Alpha Omega Epsilon enjoys a close working relationship with its male counterpart, Sigma Phi Delta (ΣΦΔ).

The Parish of the Holy Sacrifice, also known as the Church of the Holy Sacrifice, is a landmark Catholic chapel on the University of the Philippines Diliman campus. It belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cubao and its present parish priest is Rev. Fr. Jose S. Tupino III. More popularly known as the UP Chapel, the church was constructed under the supervision of Fr. John P. Delaney, who began ministering to the spiritual needs of the campus in 1947.

The College of Engineering of the University of the Philippines Diliman is the largest degree-granting unit in the U.P. System in terms of student population. The college is also known formally as UP COE, COE, and informally as Eng'g.

The Central Colleges of the Philippines, Inc. also referred to by its acronym CCP is a private, nonsectarian coeducational higher education institution located in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. CCP was established in January 18, 1954, and named the Polytechnic Colleges of the Philippines, Inc. (PCP), with an enrollment of 300 students. CCP has eleven academic programs or colleges at present.

The College of Engineering at Michigan State University (MSU) is made up of 9 departments with 168 faculty members, over 6,000 undergraduate students, 10 undergraduate B.S. degree programs and a wide spectrum of graduate programs in both M.S. and Ph.D. levels. Each department offers at least one degree program, however many include more than one degree, multi-disciplinary programs, certifications and specialties as well as other degree programs affiliated with other colleges at Michigan State University.

The College of Engineering and Science (COES) is one of five colleges at Louisiana Tech University. The roots of the College date back to the founding of Louisiana Tech in 1894 when the Department of Mechanics was created. Today, the college includes twenty-five programs, fourteen undergraduate, seven master's, and four doctoral programs. College programs are located on the Louisiana Tech campus in Ruston, Louisiana. Fraternities and sororities at the University of Virginia include the collegiate organizations on the grounds of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. Beta Sigma Omega Phi is a service fraternity and sorority founded at University of Bohol on October 10, 1968. This was organized by Frank Paz Jr., Frederick Loor, and Remy Galbizo. Their aims are to foster lifetime brotherhood and sisterhood and to build noble leaders and better citizens. It also encourages the members to promote the welfare of students and to work for better and greater involvement in the affairs of the school as well as in the community. The organization is observed through different community civics and services like tree planting, feeding program, bloodletting, operation tuli, and lately the Brigada Eskwela. Betans 1968 had reached 72 collegiate chapters throughout Philippines and most of the chapters are in the island of Mindanao.

Dominador “Dom” Ibarra Ilio was a poet and professor born in Malinao, Capiz. He is considered a pioneer of Philippine literature in English as a recognized poet and author both in the Philippines and in the United States. He was an engineer by profession.
