Ali Banisadr (b. 1976), is an Iranian-born American artist from New York City working primarily with oil painting [1] [2] [3] and also with printmaking. [4] Banisadr was ranked #1 in Flash Art's Top 100 Artists of 2011. [1]

Early life and career

Banisadr was born in Tehran. When he was twelve, he and his family moved to San Diego, in the United States. [5] He moved to New York in 2000 to study a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts, and for a Master of Fine Arts at the New York Academy of Art. [5]

In an interview with The Met, New York Banisadr said he is influenced by childhood memories of growing up in Tehran during the Iran-Iraq war and the Islamic Revolution. He compares his work to Hieronymus Bosch and other figurative artists whose work revolve around dynamism and conflict. [6] Banisadr said his synesthesia greatly affects his paintings, imbuing a sense of sound and vitriol. [7]

Banisadr has often said that his work is always a combination of personal history, art history and history of our time.

He has held solo museum exhibitions at Het Noordbrabants Museum in Den Bosch, Holland, Bosch and Banisadr at Academy of fine arts in Vienna, Austria, The Benaki Museum, Athens, Greece, Matrix 185 at Wadsworth Atheneum Museum, Hartford, CT.[ citation needed ]

Banisadr's work is represented in the museum collections of Albright- Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, The British Museum in London, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, Los Angeles's Museum of Contemporary Art, Centre Georges Pompidou , Paris, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Wadsworth Atheneum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, The artist also features in private collections such as The Olbricht Collection in Germany, Francois Pinault Foundation in Italy, London's The Saatchi Gallery, Vienna's Sammlung Essl, and The Wurth Collection in Germany. <i>The Fall of the Rebel Angels</i> Painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder

The Fall of the Rebel Angels is an oil-on-panel painting of 1562 by the Netherlandish Renaissance artist, Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The painting is 117cm x 162cm and is now in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels, Belgium. The Fall of Rebel Angels depicts Lucifer along with the other fallen angels that have been banished from heaven. Angels are falling from the sun in a stacked manner along with ungodly creatures that Bruegel created. This piece by Bruegel was previously thought to be by Hieronymus Bosch. Bruegel was influenced by a variety of artists such as Albrecht Dürer, Frans Floris I, and Hieronymus Bosch. He also got ideas for the creation of his creatures in his previous works.

Sally Michel Avery was an artist and illustrator who created modernist paintings of abstracted figures, landscapes, and genre scenes capturing personal moments of everyday life. She was the co-creator of the "Avery style", wife and collaborator of artist Milton Avery, and mother of artist March Avery. Throughout their lives, Michel and Avery shared their studio space together, painting side by side, critiquing each other's work, and developing a shared style which includes the use of abstracted subjects, expressionistic color fields, and harmonious but unusual colors juxtapositions. Michel's work is the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Wadsworth Atheneum, and the Israel Museum, among others.

<i>Philosophy</i> (Salvator Rosa) Painting by Salvator Rosa

Philosophy is an oil-on-canvas self-portrait of Salvator Rosa, the Italian Baroque artist who is best known for his imaginary landscapes. The painting is usually interpreted as a personification of philosophy. It is dated to c. 1645 and has been held by the National Gallery in London since 1933.
