Alice Merner Agogino (born 1952) is an American mechanical engineer known for her work in bringing women and people of color into engineering and her research into artificial intelligence, computer-aided design, intelligent learning systems, and wireless sensor networks. [1]
In 1997, Agogino was elected as a member to the National Academy of Engineering for applications of artificial intelligence and for reform efforts in engineering education.
Agogino attended the University of New Mexico for her undergraduate education, and earned her bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1975. She earned her master's degree three years later from the University of California, Berkeley. Her doctoral work concerned engineering and economic systems and was conducted at Stanford University. She earned her Ph.D there in 1984. [2] [3]
Agogino began her career while still an undergraduate with a stint as a project engineer for Dow Chemical from 1972–1973. While working on her master's degree and during the first year of her doctoral studies, she was a mechanical engineer and systems specialist at General Electric. She founded her own company in 1979, Agogino Engineering, which still exists. In 1980, Agogino spent a year as a systems analyst for SRI. From 1980–1981 she led the Santa Clara University's Women in Engineering program. Agogino was made an assistant professor in mechanical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley in 1984; she is now the university's Roscoe and Elizabeth Hughes Professor of Mechanical Engineering. From 1995–1999 she was the associate dean of Berkeley's College of Engineering, and from 1999–2001 she was the director of its Instructional Technology Program. She has been funded by the National Science Foundation to work with Synthesis, a program that encourages engineering education at the undergraduate level. She has served on professional committees for the National Science Foundation, the National Research Council, and the National Academy of Engineering. [2] Her current research is focused on sustainable technology and AI/Robotics for Good. [3] In 2017, she co-founded Squishy Robotics, Inc. and serves as CEO.
Agogino is a fellow of several scientific societies, including the National Academy of Engineering (1997), the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the European Academy of Science, the Association of Women in Science, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. She is a member of the Society of Women Engineers and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. [2] [3]

Amy Cohen-Corwin is a professor emerita of mathematics at Rutgers University, and former Dean of University College at Rutgers University. In 2006, she was named Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Ruzena Bajcsy is an American engineer and computer scientist who specializes in robotics. She is professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of California, Berkeley, where she is also director emerita of CITRIS.
Angela K. Wilson is an American scientist and former (2022) President of the American Chemical Society. She currently serves as the John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives in the College of Natural Sciences, and Director of the MSU Center for Quantum Computing, Science, and Engineering (MSU-Q) at Michigan State University.
Subra Suresh is an Indian-born American bioengineer, materials scientist, and academic. On 1 January 2018, he was inaugurated as the fourth President of Singapore's Nanyang Technological University (NTU), where he is also the inaugural Distinguished University Professor. Subra Suresh plans on stepping down from his role as the President of NTU at the end of 2022. He was the Vannevar Bush Professor of Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Dean of the School of Engineering at MIT from 2007 to 2010 before being appointed as Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) by Barack Obama, where he served from 2010 to 2013. He was the president of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) from 2013 to 2017.
Geraldine Lee Richmond is an American chemist and physical chemist who is serving as the Under Secretary of Energy for Science in the US Department of Energy. Richmond was confirmed to her DOE role by the United States Senate on November 5, 2021. Richmond is the Presidential Chair in Science and Professor of Chemistry at the University of Oregon (UO). She conducts fundamental research to understand the chemistry and physics of complex surfaces and interfaces. These understandings are most relevant to energy production, atmospheric chemistry and remediation of the environment. Throughout her career she has worked to increase the number and success of women scientists in the U.S. and in many developing countries in Africa, Asia and South America. Richmond has served as president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and she received the 2013 National Medal of Science.
Luz Martinez-Miranda from the University of Maryland, was awarded the status of Fellow in the American Physical Society, after she was nominated by the Forum on Education in 2007, for sustained achievements in recruiting, mentoring, and advancing women and minorities in physics; for engaging K-16 students in the excitement of research; and for being a superb role model through her elegant research to understand liquid crystal systems and further their application. Her bachelors and masters are from the University of Puerto Rico in physics. She graduated with her Ph.D. in 1985 from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She is an undergraduate advisor for the Materials Science and Engineering Department at the University of Maryland. She researches the interaction of liquid crystal with nanoscale materials for engineering and biological applications.
Sherry J. Yennello is an American nuclear chemist and an Elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She is a Regents Professor and the holder of the Cyclotron Institute Bright Chair in Nuclear Science, who currently serves as the Director of the Cyclotron Institute at Texas A&M University. She is also a Fellow of the American Chemical Society and the American Physical Society. She has authored as well as co-authored more than 530 peer reviewed journal articles and has conducted many invited talks, presentations and seminars at several prestigious academic conferences and scholarly lectures.
Erika Tatiana Camacho is a Mexican-born American mathematical biologist and professor of applied mathematics at Arizona State University. She is a 2014 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) awardee. She was taught and mentored in high school by Jaime Escalante, who was the subject of the movie Stand and Deliver.
Dr. Beronda Montgomery is a writer, science communicator, and researcher. In 2022, she moved to Grinnell College as professor of biology and vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college. Prior to Grinnell, Montgomery served as Michigan State University Foundation Professor in the Departments of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics. She was also a member of the MSU-DOE Plant Research Laboratory. Her research group investigates how photosynthetic organisms adapt to changes in their environment. Her scholarship extends beyond biology and into studying mentorship and faculty development to develop evidence-based strategies to foster equity and inclusion in academia. Together with Tanisha Williams and other members of the Black Botanists Week organizing committee, Montgomery co-founded and co-organizes Black Botanists Week.
Nina Matheny Roscher (1938—2001) was an American chemist and advocate for women and minorities in science. She also researched the history of women in chemistry, publishing the book Women Chemists (1995). She served as professor and chair of the chemistry department at American University in Washington, D.C. She received the ACS Award for Encouraging Women into Careers in the Chemical Sciences (1996) and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (1998).
Marcey Lynn Waters is the Glen H. Elder Jr., Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (UNC-CH). She is an organic chemist whose research is at the interface of chemical biology and supramolecular chemistry. Waters has received multiple awards, for research, teaching, and advocating for women in science. She is serving the President of the American Peptide Society from 2017 to 2019.
Elizabeth J. (Betsy) Beise is a Professor of Physics and Associate Provost at the University of Maryland, College Park. She works on quantum chromodynamics, nucleon structure and fundamental symmetries.
Mary E. Lidstrom is a Professor of Microbiology at the University of Washington. She also holds the Frank Jungers Chair of Engineering, in the Department of Chemical Engineering. She currently is a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, a member of the National Academy of Sciences and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Bacteriology and FEMS Microbial Ecology.

JoAnn Slama Lighty is an American chemical engineer who is a professor at Boise State University. Her research considers carbon capture, chemical looping and black carbon emissions. In 2020 she was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science for her air quality research.
Cheryl Ann Kerfeld is an American bioengineer who is Hannah Distinguished Professor at Michigan State University. She holds a joint position at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Her research considers bioinformatics, cellular imaging and structural biology.
Christine Sharon Grant is an American chemical engineer who is the Associate Dean of Faculty Advancement at North Carolina State University. Her research considers surface and environmental science. She is the 2022 President of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
