Alice Kok (born 1978) is a visual artist and curator from Macau. Her work has been nominated for the Hong Kong Independent Film and Video Award, and has represented Macau at the Venice Biennale. She is the president and a curator at Art for All, a non-profit organisation in Macau dedicated to promoting Macau artists. She has curated and exhibited several projects in Macau.

Biography

Kok was born in Macau in 1978, and studied visual communication at the Macau Polytechnic Institute. [1] She later moved to France, earning a Bachelor's and a master's degree in Fine Arts from the Toulouse School of Fine Arts in 2002 and 2004, respectively. [2] She has spent several years traveling in India and Tibet, and currently divides her time between Lhasa, in Tibet and Macau. [3] [1] She has been active in supporting Tibetan refugees. [4]

Career

Kok won a grant from La DRAC Ile-de-France in 2006 to create the film Karabic OK. [5] In 2007, she made a second film, Yet in Exile: Family Script, based on her travels in Tibet and India. [1] The film was well-received critically, and was a finalist for the Hong Kong Independent Film and Video Award in 2009. [5] Yet in Exile: Family Script was also selected for screening at the Gwanju Biennale, in 2010. [6]

In 2011, Kok's art project, Passing-Green Island, was selected to represent Macau at the Venice Biennale. [3] She has since had five solo exhibitions in Macau. [2]

Kok makes video, installations, drawings, and writing in her art projects. She represents several themes, including multiculturalism, religious themes drawn from Buddhism, and post-colonial concerns of identity. [6]

Kok is the editor of a Chinese art magazine, CLOSER, and also teaches as a visiting professor at the Macau Institute of Tourism, the University of St. Joseph, and the Macau University of Science and Technology. [6] [7] She has been the director of the Artists Association of Macau's Art For All Society, a significant non-profit organization dedicated to promoting local Macau art, since 2014, and was also the director for a literary festival in Macau named 'The Script Road'. Shirley Tse is an American contemporary artist born in Hong Kong. She is faculty in the School of Art at California Institute of the Arts, and was the Co-Director of the Program in Art from 2011-2014. Ellen Pau is an artist, curator and researcher based in Hong Kong. She is also co-founder of Videotage and founding artistic director of the Microwave International New Media Arts Festival. The artist's first retrospective exhibition in Hong Kong was organized by Para Site in 2018. The exhibition included major video installations ranging from the 1980s to the present.

Kwok Mang Ho, also known as Frog King, is a multi-media, conceptual, visual and performance artist from Hong Kong. According to Oscar Ho, the former exhibition director of Hong Kong Art Centre, he is one of the pioneers of contemporary art in Hong Kong during the early 70s. His artistic uniqueness is best expressed in his creations “Frogtopia”, which takes over the exhibition space with numerous colourful mixed-media installations and graffiti of his signatured frog icon. In addition to his inexhaustible style, Kwok held a solo multimedia art exhibition representing Hong Kong “Frogtopia-Hongkorucopia” (蛙托邦•鴻港浩搞筆鴉) at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011. He is currently the director of the Frog King Museum at Cattle Depot Artist Village since 2001.

Nadia Kaabi-Linke is a Tunis-born, Berlin-based visual artist best known for her conceptual art and 2011 sculpture Flying Carpets. Her work has explored themes of geopolitics, immigration, and transnational identities. Raised between Tunis, Kyiv, Dubai and Paris, she studied at the Tunis Institute of Fine Arts and received a Ph.D. in philosophy of art from the Sorbonne. Kaabi-Linke won the 2011 Abraaj Group Art Prize, which commissioned Flying Carpets, a hanging cage-like sculpture that casts geometric shadows onto the floor akin to the carpets of Venetian street vendors. The piece was acquired by the New York Guggenheim in 2016 as part of their Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative. Kaabi-Linke also won the Discoveries Prize for emerging art at the 2014 Art Basel Hong Kong. Her works have been collected by the Museum of Modern Art, Dallas Museum of Art, Burger Collection, and Samdani Art Foundation, and exhibited in multiple solo and group shows.

Alice Ming Wai Jim is an art historian, curator and Professor at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, as well as an Adjunct Professor in Graduate Studies at OCAD University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She focuses her research on diasporic art in Canada, contemporary Asian art and contemporary Asian Canadian art, particularly on the relationships between remix culture and place identity. She currently holds the Concordia University Research Chair in Ethnocultural Art History (2017–2022).

Ho Sin Tung is a visual artist who lives and works in Hong Kong.

The 59th Venice Biennale is an international contemporary art exhibition held between April and November 2022. The Venice Biennale takes place biennially in Venice, Italy. Artistic director Cecilia Alemani curated its central exhibition.
