Alice Russell (born 1 March 1975) [1] is a British soul singer.
Russell is the daughter of an organist, and grew up in Framlingham, Suffolk. At the age of nine, following in her father and sisters' musical footsteps, Russell began taking lessons on the cello, and sang in choirs, before studying art and music in Brighton from 1994. [2]
As well as the classical influences of her father, and formal music lessons, Russell began finding influence in gospel music and soul artists such as Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin from an early age which played a big part in the shaping of her style. [3]
Artists including Minnie Riperton, Eva Cassidy, Chaka Khan and Jill Scott are listed by Russell as influences. [4]
In the early 2000s, she contributed to recordings by Bah Samba, Quantic, [5] TM Juke, Kushti and Nostalgia 77. Her work with Bah Samba infused Latin sounds with tinges of uplifting jazz and funk, whereas her material with the band Kushti contained a more laid back, hip hop and soul inspired sound. Her debut album, Under the Munka Moon was released on Tru Thoughts in 2004, which was an amalgamation of various singles, remixes and collaborations.
In 2005, her debut studio album My Favourite Letters was recorded for Tru Thoughts, created by Russell with co-writer, producer, guitarist and musical friend Alex Cowan (a.k.a. TM Juke). [6]
Her third release, Under the Munka Moon II (Tru Thoughts) in 2006 compiled her most recent collaborations, remixes, and cover versions including an interpretation of the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army". [7] Russell and TM Juke toured together with chosen sidemen, performing in the UK, Europe, Australia, the United States and elsewhere. In 2006, Russell played the main stage at The Big Chill, and a DVD featuring a concert recorded Live in Paris came out.
In 2008, Russell released the album, Pot of Gold, on Six Degrees Records in the United States and on her own label Little Poppet in the UK. Russell toured throughout the end of 2008 into 2009, performing shows in Australia, Europe, Canada and America, including the South by South West Music and Media Conference in Austin, Texas in 2009.
Due to the collapse of Pinnacle distribution in 2008, Pot of Gold was re-released in October 2009 on the Little Poppet label, accompanied by the release of the double CD Pot of Gold Remixes album, with mixes by Mr Scruff, DJ Vadim, Emika, Ste Simpson and the Heavy. [8] [9] The releases were supported by European and UK tour dates, that continued in 2010 throughout Europe, including playing a stripped back show at London's Union Chapel.
Russell released the studio album To Dust on Tru Thoughts in February 2013. [10] [11] [12] Her latest album, I Am, issued in April 2024, was her first in a decade. [13]
De La Soul is an American hip hop group formed in 1988 in the village of Amityville on Long Island, New York. They are best known for their eclectic sampling, eccentric lyrics, and contributions to the evolution of the jazz rap and alternative hip hop subgenres. Kelvin "Posdnuos" Mercer, David "Trugoy the Dove" Jolicoeur, and Vincent "Maseo" Mason formed the group in high school and caught the attention of producer Prince Paul with a demo tape of the song "Plug Tunin'".
Andrew Carthy, known professionally as Mr. Scruff, is an English record producer and DJ. He lives in Stretford, Greater Manchester and studied fine art at the Psalter Lane campus of Sheffield Hallam University. Before he could make a living from his music alone, he worked as a shelf stocker in the Hazel Grove branch of Kwik Save.
Peter O. Phillips, better known by his stage name Pete Rock, is an American music producer, DJ and rapper. He is widely recognized as one of the greatest hip hop producers of all time, and is often mentioned alongside DJ Premier, and RZA as one of the mainstays of 1990s East Coast hip hop production. He rose to prominence in the early 1990s as one half of the critically acclaimed group Pete Rock & CL Smooth. Early on in his career, he was also famed for his remix work.
Simon Green, known by his stage name Bonobo, is an English musician, producer, and DJ based in Los Angeles. He debuted with a trip hop aesthetic and has since explored more upbeat approaches as well as jazz and world music influences. His electronic sound incorporates the use of organic instrumentation and is recreated by a full band in live performances.
Damien Beebe, known professionally as DJ Day is a DJ, producer and musician from Palm Springs, California. He formed the Innernational Crew with DJ Rip One in 1995, and had subsequent appearances with Innernational on Return of the DJ III & Laid in Full. He has worked with Stones Throw recording artists Aloe Blacc and Clutchy Hopkins, as well as remixes for Quantic, Alice Russell, People Under The Stairs and more.
Boozoo Bajou is a German musical duo composed of Florian Seyberth and Peter Heider. They are noted for their distinct blend of Cajun sounds with island rhythms. Their first album, Satta, was released in 2001. In 2005 they released Dust My Broom. The list of Boozoo Bajou remixes for other artists includes Common, Tosca, Trüby Trio, and Tony Joe White.

Alfred Darlington, better known by their stage name Daedelus, is an American record producer based in Los Angeles, California. They are a part of the groups The Long Lost and Adventure Time. They are affiliated with the internet radio station Dublab.
William Holland is an English musician, DJ, and record producer. Holland records under various pseudonyms, including Quantic, the Quantic Soul Orchestra, The Limp Twins, Flowering Inferno, and Ondatrópica. His music features elements of tropical, cumbia, salsa, bossa nova, soul, funk and jazz. Holland plays guitars, bass, double bass, piano, organ, saxophone, accordion and percussion. Much of his sound is original composition, rather than sampling of other artists' material. In addition to his original compositions, he has also produced remixes of over 30 songs.
Louella "Spanky" Wilson is an American soul, funk and jazz vocalist, who has performed internationally and recorded several albums since the late 1960s.
Pushin' On is Quantic Soul Orchestra's second full-length release. The singer Alice Russell performs on several of the album's tracks. The title track is featured in the pilot episode of Californication and the 2008 film Strange Wilderness.

Saint-Germain-des-Prés Café is a series of nu-jazz compilations distributed by Wagram Music. Its name evokes the cafés of the area in Paris associated with the existentialism movement. As of 2016 the series includes eighteen volumes, and has sold more than 950,000 copies worldwide.
Look Around the Corner is an album by Quantic and Alice Russell, recorded and produced by Holland in his studio in Cali, Colombia, and released in 2012 on Tru Thoughts. The production was granted by the PRS for Music Foundation. The title track "Look Around the Corner" was released up front as 10" single, and was added to the daily rotation play list of BBC 6Music. Louis Pattison entitled his review for the BBC "An exceptional collaboration – like manna from heaven for leftfield soul fans", characterising it as "mixing warm, brassy funk and soul grooves with Latin jazz and cumbia, it's a soft sort of fusion, mixing flavours with a lightness of touch."
Detroit: Become Human is a 2018 adventure game developed by Quantic Dream. The game was released for the PlayStation 4 in May 2018, published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. A port for Windows was released in December 2019, published by Quantic Dream. The plot follows three androids: Kara, who escapes her owner to explore her newfound sentience and protect a young girl; Connor, whose job is to hunt down sentient androids; and Markus, who devotes himself to releasing other androids from servitude. The player's choices affect the course and outcome of the story.
Annika Schmarsel known by her stage name Alice Ivy, is an Australian electronic musician and producer. Alice Ivy was the winner of the 2016 Triple J Unearthed Listen Out competition. She has released two studio albums: I'm Dreaming (2018), and Don't Sleep (2020), which reached No. 77 on the ARIA Albums Chart.
Benedic Lamdin is a British music producer, composer, songwriter and guitarist who releases music as Nostalgia 77. He has produced Nostalgia 77 albums since 2004, with a variety of other musicians, some of which are instrumental and some have guest vocalists. "His music encompasses everything from sample-based compositions to collaborations with real, live musicians". Lamdin has also written and produced for assorted singers, including Jamie Cullum, Alice Russell, and Jeb Loy Nichols. He also runs his own jazz record label, Impossible Ark.
