Alison Henderson

Alison Henderson (born January 16th 1989) is a Canadian politician and activist from Quebec. She is Green Party of Quebec's candidate in the Montreal riding of Westmount–Saint-Louis for Quebec general election, 2018. [1]

Quebec Province of Canada

Quebec is one of the thirteen provinces and territories of Canada. It is bordered to the west by the province of Ontario and the bodies of water James Bay and Hudson Bay; to the north by Hudson Strait and Ungava Bay; to the east by the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the province of Newfoundland and Labrador; and to the south by the province of New Brunswick and the U.S. states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York. It also shares maritime borders with Nunavut, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia. Quebec is Canada's largest province by area and its second-largest administrative division; only the territory of Nunavut is larger. It is historically and politically considered to be part of Central Canada.

The Green Party of Quebec (GPQ) is a Quebec political party whose platform is the promotion of green values. It has not won any seats in the National Assembly of Quebec. Its platform is orientated towards promotion of green values, sustainable development, and participatory democracy. The Party wants to differentiate itself from other political parties in Quebec by representing the left federalists of the province.

Westmount–Saint-Louis is a provincial electoral district in the Montreal region of Quebec, Canada that elects members to the National Assembly of Quebec. It comprises the city of Westmount as well as parts of the Ville-Marie and Le Plateau-Mont-Royal boroughs of Montreal.

Early life and education

Henderson was born and raised in Westmount–Saint-Louis. Passionate about rafting, rock climbing, scuba diving, and traveling, she worked in the outdoor tourism industry in Alaska, Australia, and British Columbia, and she has travelled to every continent except Antarctica. She studied political science at Concordia University and at the University of Toronto. She won the Lieutenant Governor's Youth Medal. At just 18 years old, she was a field worker in Uganda providing relief with the AIDS Support Organization. [2]

Alaska is a U.S. state in the northwest extremity of North America, just across the Bering Strait from Asia. The Canadian province of British Columbia and territory of Yukon border the state to the east, its most extreme western part is Attu Island, and it has a maritime border with Russia to the west across the Bering Strait. To the north are the Chukchi and Beaufort seas—southern parts of the Arctic Ocean. The Pacific Ocean lies to the south and southwest. In addition, it is the 3rd least populous and the most sparsely populated of the 50 United States; nevertheless, it is by far the most populous territory located mostly north of the 60th parallel in North America: its population—estimated at 738,432 by the United States Census Bureau in 2015— is more than quadruple the combined populations of Northern Canada and Greenland. Approximately half of Alaska's residents live within the Anchorage metropolitan area. Alaska's economy is dominated by the fishing, natural gas, and oil industries, resources which it has in abundance. Military bases and tourism are also a significant part of the economy.

Australia, officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a sovereign country comprising the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania and numerous smaller islands. It is the largest country in Oceania and the world's sixth-largest country by total area. The neighbouring countries are Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and East Timor to the north; the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu to the north-east; and New Zealand to the south-east. The population of 25 million is highly urbanised and heavily concentrated on the eastern seaboard. Australia's capital is Canberra, and its largest city is Sydney. The country's other major metropolitan areas are Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.

British Columbia Province of Canada

British Columbia is the westernmost province of Canada, located between the Pacific Ocean and the Rocky Mountains. With an estimated population of 5.016 million as of 2018, it is Canada's third-most populous province.

Activism

Henderson is a devoted activist for the social and environmental cause. She campaigns for a fair distribution of resources, a better access to public health care and post-secondary education, as well as an increased financial plan for mental health services.

During her activist career, Henderson participated actively to Occupy Montreal, the 2012 Quebec student protests, and the 2010 G20 Toronto summit protests. During the 2010 G20 Toronto summit protests, she was part of the hundreds of activists who were arrested and detained illegally. She is a fervent supporter of the right to protest and to be heard within a democratic framework. [1]

2012 Quebec student protests

The 2012 Quebec student protests were a series of student demonstrations led by student unions such as the Association pour une solidarité syndicale étudiante, the Fédération étudiante universitaire du Québec, and the Fédération étudiante collégiale du Québec against a proposal by the Quebec Cabinet, headed by Liberal Premier Jean Charest, to raise university tuition from $2,168 to $3,793 between 2012 and 2018. As part of the protest movement, a series of widespread student strikes were organized, involving half of Quebec's student population by April 2012. A third of Quebec students continued to participate in the strike by its 100th day, while a quarter million had participated during its peak. Other students continued to attend their courses.

2010 G20 Toronto summit protests Protest Event

Public protesting and demonstrations began one week ahead of the 2010 G20 Toronto summit, which took place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on 26−27 June. The protests were for various causes, including poverty and anti-capitalism.

Politics

She did her first federal political debut as volunteers coordinator for Jack Layton's 2011 New Democratic Party's campaign. She is currently running for Quebec general election, 2018 as Green Party of Quebec's candidate in Westmount–Saint-Louis. If elected, she plans on defending free education, feminism, a better support to the elderly, and dental/pharmaceutical care for everyone as a deputy at the National Assembly of Quebec. [1]

Jack Layton Leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada

John Gilbert "Jack" Layton was a Canadian politician and Leader of the Official Opposition. He was leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP) from 2003 to 2011, and previously sat on Toronto City Council, occasionally holding the title of acting mayor or deputy mayor of Toronto during his tenure as city councillor. He was the Member of Parliament for Toronto—Danforth from 2004 until his death.

The New Democratic Party is a social democratic federal political party in Canada. The party was founded in 1961 out of the merger of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) with the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC). The party sits to the left of the Liberal Party of Canada within the Canadian political spectrum. The leader of the federal NDP is Jagmeet Singh, who won the 2017 leadership election.
