All Fours is a 2024 novel by Miranda July. [1] [2] The novel follows a 45-year-old perimenopausal woman who, after having an extramarital affair during a road trip, has a sexual awakening. [3] [4] [5] The narrator begins a sexually charged relationship with Davey, a married man, and then a sexual relationship with Audra, an ex lover of Davey's. She tells her husband and they decide to stay together and each have separate lovers. [6]
According to Book Marks , the book received a "rave" consensus, based on twenty-three critic reviews: thirteen "rave", eight "positive", one "mixed", and one "pan". [7] In the September/October 2024 issue of Bookmarks , the book received three and a half out of five stars. The magazine's critical summary reads: "A few reviewers mentioned that the second half, which reflects on the narrator's marriage, is less successful than the first part. However, All Fours is, true to July's style, "acerbically clever" (Guardian) and delightful for its "absurd non sequiturs" (Washington Post)". [8]
The novel was shortlisted for the 2024 National Book Award for Fiction. [9] It was listed as 2024 book of the year by Open Book (BBC Radio 4), The Observer , GQ , Grazia , I-D and Nylon magazine, among others. [10]
Starz will adapt the novel into a television series. [11] [12]
