The All Pakistan Trade Union Congress (APTUC) is a national trade union center in Pakistan. It is affiliated with the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) based in Paris, France. [2] [3]

In 2011, All Pakistan Trade Union Congress had approximately 150,000 members nationwide. This organization's Secretary General, Shouket Ali was trying to rally the whole nation back then for relief work after the 2010 Pakistan floods. This would also mean getting the displaced flood victims and workers back to work. [1] [4]

In 2004, organized labour held a press conference in Karachi, Pakistan to demand the repeal of an anti-labor government ordinance called Industrial Relations Ordinance 2002. [5]

The Sindh Act, 2011 was an act passed by the Provincial Assembly of Sindh on July 13, 2011 and assented to by the Acting Governor of Sindh, Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, on July 14, 2011. The act repealed the Sindh Local Government Ordinance, 2001 and restored the Sindh Local Government Ordinance, 1979. The act restored the tiers of government outlined in the 1979 ordinance: City Government Karachi, District Government, Town/Taluka Municipal Administration, and Union Administration.

Trade unions in Pakistan are regulated under provincial industrial relations acts. Under the Constitution of Pakistan, labour is considered a shared responsibility of the federal and provincial governments. The latest Industrial Relation Act was promulgated on 12 March 2012 by President of Pakistan. National Industrial Relations Commission (NIRC) was established under Labour Policy, 1972 as a quasi-judicial authority to promote genuine trade unionism, setting up industry-wise federations of unions and at the national levels. According to NIRC, in 2016 there were 1,390 trade unions with registered 1.4 million members. There are 16 registered federations and the ratio of total union members to total employment is 2.2%.

Aftab Ali was an early 20th-century Pakistani Bengali social reformer, politician and entrepreneur. His work is recognised to have helped thousands of British Asian lascars to migrate, settle and find employment in Britain. He was a member of the Bengal Legislative Assembly and National Assembly of Pakistan, and served as the first Minister of Labour for East Pakistan.

The All Pakistan Confederation of Labour (APCOL) was a national trade union centre in Pakistan. It was formed in 1950 through a merger of PFL and EPFL and in the following years became the dominant trade union centre through government sponsorship. In the 1960s, it dissolved into PNFTU, APFOL and APFTU.
