Allan Holmes (public servant)

Allan Holmes (born 1954) is a former senior South Australian public servant. He holds several board positions in South Australia, including Presiding Member of the Coast Protection Board, [1] Deputy Presiding Member of the board of the Environment Protection Authority (SA) and member of the board of the Environment Institute at the University of Adelaide. [2]

Career

Holmes completed a Bachelor of Science at the University of Melbourne in 1975 and a Masters of Environmental Studies at the University of Adelaide in 1977. [3]

Holmes was appointed director of South Australia's National Parks in 1994 and went on to serve as Chief Executive of the Department of Environment and Heritage and later the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources until his retirement in 2014. [4] [5] Holmes is a former chair of the Zero Waste SA Board and was South Australia's representative on the Murray-Darling Basin Commission. Holmes was appointed Deputy Presiding Member of the board of the South Australian Environment Protection Authority on 11 March 2016. He was first appointed to the board in April 2003. [6]

Holmes has been a spokesperson for South Australia's Department of the Environment on various issues, including the management of the state's water resources, [7] [8] management of marine [9] and terrestrial protected areas, reductions in funding to the department, [10] and the lack of attention paid to environmental issues by the South Australian media. John OBrien (businessman)

John O'Brien is an English businessman and an expert advisor to Australian governments and the cleantech sector. He is a Partner with Deloitte Financial Advisory and leads the firm's Energy Transition and Decarbonisation work in Australia. He was formerly the managing director of Australian CleanTech which acted as the Australian representative for the Global CleanTech Cluster Association. He was also a non-executive director of Novarise Ltd, an ASX listed company which recycles polypropylene waste in China. O'Brien entered the Australian energy sector in the 1990s and worked for Origin Energy for nine years. He had previously worked in the Middle East, the United Kingdom and Canada where he held various oil and gas industry and consulting engineering roles. O'Brien lectured in leadership and entrepreneurship at the University of Adelaide and was a member of the Premier’s Climate Change Council in South Australia. He has been a member of the board of several CleanTech companies involved in wind farm development, biosensors and plastic recycling. He has served on the board of Renewables SA and as a member of the Clean Technology Innovation Program Committee at Innovation Australia. O'Brien has studied at Oxford, Trinity College in Dublin and the University of Adelaide from which he has received two engineering degrees and an MBA respectively.

Duck hunting is an outdoor recreational activity practised under a permit system in the Australian state of South Australia. Licensed shooters hunt using shotguns and dogs, and are provided with permits issued by the Department of Environment and Water on payment of a fee and completion of a Waterfowl Identification Test. Permits are available to persons 14 years of age and older for an annual fee of $43.25 or $22.40 for children or concession holders. The activity is opposed by animal welfare groups who consider the practice to be unacceptably cruel.

Paranki Lagoon Conservation Park Protected area in South Australia

Paranki Lagoon Conservation Park is a protected area in the Australian state of South Australia located in the state's south-east in the gazetted locality of West Range about 14 kilometres north of the town of Kingston SE. The conservation park was proclaimed under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 on 16 October 2014 in respect to an area of land that:

… was a significant feeding ground for waterbirds and waders in the South East. Because it is fed by groundwater, the lake tends to fill earlier in winter and holds water longer in summer than most other lakes in the area. In the past, it has hosted up to 30,000 banded stilt, which are listed as vulnerable under the National Parks and Wildlife Act, and 40,000 waterfowl. Regular seasonal bird counts have also found it is an important feeding ground for a number of migratory species that use the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. These are birds like the sharp-tailed sandpiper, curlew sandpiper and red-necked stint, which are the subject of a number of international protection agreements.

Rob Lewis is a South Australian marine scientist and retired senior civil servant. He discovered the first known upwelling system in southern Australia and was professionally involved in fisheries and aquaculture management for 38 years. He was head of South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) from 1992 to 2010.
