Allan Yn Y Fan are a folk group originally formed in southeast Wales, but now containing members from north Wales and across the UK. They have been touring across the UK and Western Europe for over 20 years, performing in Welsh and English.

Background

Allan Yn Y Fan (translating as 'on the spot' in English) were formed in South Wales in 1996 as a four-piece consisting of Geoff Cripps, Chris Jones, Kate Strudwick and Linda Simmonds. [1] They have since performed in Wales, England, [2] Ireland, [3] France, Czech Republic, [1] Luxembourg, Switzerland and twice toured Germany. [4]

The band was joined by fiddle player Emma Trend between 2002 and 2007. Between 2008 and 2014 she was replaced by Meriel Field. Singer Catrin O'Neill (from North Wales) and fiddler Alan Cooper joined in 2015, bringing the band to six members. [1]

Allan Yn Y Fan released their sixth album, called NEWiD, in 2016. [5]

Calan (band)

Calan is a five-piece revivalist traditional Welsh band formed by their manager Huw Williams in early 2006 when its members were only 13 to 22 years old. In 2008, they created great excitement at the Inter Celtic Festival where they would eventually be the first Welsh band to win the coveted international band competition.

Catrin Ana Finch is a Welsh harpist, arranger and composer. She was the Official Harpist to the Prince of Wales from 2000 to 2004 and is Visiting Professor at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama and the Royal Academy of Music in London. Finch has given recitals at venues throughout the world.

Jim Rowlands is a Welsh folk singer, who lives near Ploermel, Brittany, France. He had toured France over the last 30 years almost non-stop, promoting Wales and its music and culture in countless festivals, such as L'interceltique de lorient and Printemps de Bourges, and concerts, such as at Stade de France and Cirque Bouglione.

Steve Eaves is a Welsh poet, songwriter and singer, working in the Welsh language. He has lived for most of his life in the Bangor area of North Wales. He has been a performing musician for over 45 years. During the late 1960s and early 1970s he worked as a labourer and musician, with frequent forays to Chester, Crewe and other locations to perform at folk clubs and underground venues of the period. He also performed at the now legendary Les Cousins folk club in Soho, sharing the floor spot with legendary blues singer Jo Ann Kelly. He also performed with various 'underground' luminaries of the time such as Al Stewart, Tea and Symphony, and the Sutherland Brothers.

Carwyn Ellis British musician

Carwyn Ellis is a Welsh musician, composer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist and record producer. He is known as the frontman of British alternative band Colorama, as a member of The Pretenders and as a long-time collaborator with Edwyn Collins. In 2014, they worked together on the soundtrack to the film The Possibilities Are Endless which won the Mojo 'Film of the Year' Award.

Y Bandana Are a Welsh language alternative rock band that formed in Caernarfon in 2007. The band is composed of brothers Tomos Owens (keyboard) and Siôn Owens, their cousin Gwilym Bowen Rhys and Robin Jones (percussion). They are known for combining humorous lyrics with catchy melodies.

The Barry Horns are an eleven-piece brass band, made up of fans of the Welsh national football team. The band's name is a homage to retired Welsh footballer Barry Horne. The band has a five-point mission statement called the Barryfesto, which notes that the band exists in order

  1. to unite Welsh football with the power of horns
  2. to put tunes on the terraces
  3. to bring hope where there is mathematical impossibility
  4. to replace plastic hooters with brass ones
  5. to win at life when we can't win at football.
H. Hawkline Welsh musician

Huw Evans, also known as H. Hawkline, is a Welsh singer-songwriter and radio and television presenter based in Cardiff. He also lived and worked in Los Angeles for several years. He performs in both English and Welsh. His stage name is taken from Richard Brautigan's book The Hawkline Monster: A Gothic Western.

The Gentle Good is the stage name of Gareth Bonello, a singer-songwriter and folk musician from Cardiff who performs in English and Welsh. The stage name is inspired by Bonello's, with "Gareth" traditionally meaning "Gentle" in Welsh. In addition to his own material, Bonello has had a longstanding partnership with musician Richard James and has also collaborated with other artists as a session musician.

Alun Huws, known professionally as Sbardun, was a Welsh musician and songwriter, known mainly for founding 1970s folk band Y Tebot Piws. He worked exclusively in Welsh and only gave one English language interview to the music press.

Catrin Finch and Cimarron Live YN BYW is a live album recorded in 2007 by the official harpist of the Prince of Wales, Catrin Finch, and Colombian band Cimarron.

Gwilym (transl. William) are a Welsh-language pop rock group from Ynys Môn and Caernarfon. The band consists of members Ifan Pritchard, Llyr Jones, Llew Glyn, Rhys Grail, and Carwyn Williams. The group was founded in 2017.

Jamie Smiths Mabon Welsh folk band

Jamie Smith's Mabon are a Welsh folk band renowned for their live performances and their seven albums released between 2001 and 2018. Founded in 1998, the band were in operation until disbanding in 2020.
