Almir Barbosa (born June 2, 1980) is a Cape Verdean footballer.

Career

College and amateur

Born in Cape Verde, Barbosa spent his early childhood in Portugal, before moving to Quincy, Massachusetts, in the United States aged 15. He played for the Massachusetts-based Cape Verdean ethnic Fidjus Terra, Alianca CV, and Clube Tabanka, [1] and played college soccer at the University of South Carolina Spartanburg, where he was a National Soccer Coaches Athletic Association All-American in 2000 and received All-Conference honors in 2003.

Professional

Barbosa turned professional in 2004 and began his career in the USL Second Division, then moved to Sweden, playing for Kristianstads FF, before returning to the United States when he signed for the New Hampshire Phantoms in the USL Second Division in 2006. Barbosa was named to the USL Division 2 All-League First Team and tied for second in the league in scoring with 10 goals in his debut season with the Phantoms.

Barbosa moved to the Harrisburg City Islanders in 2008 making 16 appearances, following the Phantoms' relegation to the USL Premier Development League, [2] and spent one year in Pennsylvania before signing for the Western Mass Pioneers in 2009. He played 19 games and scored 9 goals for the Pioneers in USL-2 in 2009. Barbosa was named to the USL Division 2 All-League Team but was released at the end of the year when the Pioneers also self-relegated to the PDL. Barbosa also had the honor of being selected as one of USL's Division 2 players of the decade.

Having been unable to secure a professional contract elsewhere, Barbosa returned to play for the New Hampshire Phantoms in the USL Premier Development League in 2010. [3]

The Santiago South Premier Division is a regional championship played in Santiago Island, Cape Verde and is a part of the Santiago South Zone Football Association. The winner of the championship plays in Cape Verdean football Championships of each season while the last two placed clubs relegates in the following season. In 2007 and 2013 when Sporting Praia automatically qualified in the championships as they won their national titles in the previous season, a second place club qualified to the national championships. The division features 12 clubs in the premier division for the second time, Varanda and Delta were relegated into the Second Division, Tchadense and Benfica were promoted last season.

Its started on 12 May and finished on 21 July, earlier than the last season. The tournament was organized by the Cape Verdean Football Federation. Sporting would win their 6th title and second straight after defeating Académica do Mindelo under the away goals rule, the only time it happened, the scorer was Dário who scored their only goal at the finals during stoppage time. They would have entry to the 2008 CAF Champions League. No second place team would also participate in the 2008 CAF Confederation Cup

Its started on 16 April, earlier than the last season and finished on 11 June. The tournament was organized by the Cape Verdean Football Federation. Sporting would win their 8th title and fourth straight after defeating the city's rival Académica. This was the first final competition that featured two clubs from the same island as well as the same city, it happened the following season with Boavista. Sporting Praia's next and final title would win in 2012.

The 2012 Cape Verdean Football Championship season was the 33rd of the competition of the first-tier football in Cape Verde. Its started on 5 May and finished on 7 July, slightly earlier than last year. The tournament was organized by the Cape Verdean Football Federation. Sporting Praia won the ninth title, it would be the club's most recent title win. This time, Sporting Praia did not participate in the 2013 CAF Champions League. No club also participated in the 2013 CAF Confederation Cup. In 2012, Sporting Praia won the first super cup title and would become the first club to win both the championship and the super cup title in the same season.

The 2017 Cape Verdean Football Championship season was the 38th beginner level competition of the first-tier football in Cape Verde. It started on 13 May and finished on 27 August, it started a days later than last season. Originally to finish on 15 July, instead, it was rescheduled to 27 August. The championship was governed by the Cape Verdean Football Federation.
