Alyson Jones (born 1956) is a British GP and former swimming champion.
She was born in Middlesbrough in north-east England and attended local schools. She began training as a competitive swimmer at local clubs such as Eston and Hartlepool, winning several titles in the Northumberland and Durham Swimming Association. In 1974, at age 17, she represented England at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand, winning a bronze medal in the 4×100 m freestyle relay. [1] [2] [3]
She won the 1985 British Championship in 50 metres freestyle [4] and 100 metres freestyle. [5]
Following this, she ceased competitive swimming to study medicine at the University of Nottingham. Remarkably, in 1985 she returned to competitive swimming at the age of 28, gaining national ranking in freestyle. This was four years before Olympic medallist Sharron Davies also returned to top level competition at the age of 26. [6]
Jones is interested in sports medicine, and has accompanied British teams abroad as team doctor. She currently holds the masters record for the 100 m freestyle, age group 50-54, set in 2007.[ citation needed ]
Jones is related to other noted sporting figures. She is a great-granddaughter of footballer Walter Tranter, who played for West Ham United in 1900, and a cousin of Leeds United and England footballer Michael O'Grady.[ citation needed ]
Adrian David Moorhouse MBE is an English former competitive swimmer who dominated British swimming in the late 1980s. He won the gold medal in the 100-metre breaststroke at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, Korea. Since then Moorhouse, a former pupil of Bradford Grammar School, has translated his sporting success to a successful career in the business world, as managing director of Lane4, a consultancy helping individuals and teams around the world reach their fullest potential.
Susan Rolph is a female former freestyle and medley swimmer from Great Britain.
Sarah Lucy Hardcastle, also known by her married name Sarah Thomas, is a British former competitive swimmer who represented Great Britain in the Olympics, world championships and European championships, and swam for England in the Commonwealth Games. She specialised in the 400- and 800-metre freestyle, and also competed in medley races. Hardcastle won multiple major championship medals over the course of her career, including individual silver and bronze medals at the 1984 Summer Olympics at the age of 15 and two individual gold medals at the 1986 Commonwealth Games. She retired from the sport in 1986 but returned in 1993, winning gold at the World Short Course Championships for the 800-metre freestyle in 1995 and reaching the final of the same event at the 1996 Summer Olympics.
Andrew David Jameson is an English sports commentator and former competitive swimmer. Active as an elite swimmer in the mid-to-late 1980s he represented Great Britain in two consecutive Summer Olympics, the FINA World Championships, LEN European Championships, as well as England in the Commonwealth Games. At his peak between 1986 and 1988 he won the gold medal in 100 metre butterfly at the 1986 Commonwealth Games, the 1987 European Aquatics Championships and the 1987 Summer Universiade, as well as the 100 metre freestyle gold at the same Universiade. Winning the bronze medal at the 1986 World Aquatics Championships, Jameson's career in the pool culminated in winning the bronze medal in the 1988 Summer Olympics, his second and final Olympic Games.
