The Palestinian National Authority,commonly known as the Palestinian Authority and officially the State of Palestine,is the Fatah-controlled government body that exercises partial civil control over West Bank areas "A" and "B" as a consequence of the 1993–1995 Oslo Accords. The Palestinian Authority controlled the Gaza Strip prior to the Palestinian elections of 2006 and the subsequent Gaza conflict between the Fatah and Hamas parties,when it lost control to Hamas;the PA continues to claim the Gaza Strip,although Hamas exercises de facto control. Since January 2013,the Palestinian Authority has used the name "State of Palestine" on official documents,although the United Nations continues to recognize the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) as the "representative of the Palestinian people".
In 2004,the Israeli Defense Forces launched Operation "Days of Penitence",otherwise known as Operation "Days of Repentance" in the northern Gaza Strip. The operation lasted between 29 September and 16 October 2004. About 130 Palestinians,and 1 Israeli were killed.
The government of Palestine is the government of the Palestinian Authority or State of Palestine. The Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (EC) is the highest executive body of the Palestine Liberation Organization and acts as the government. Since June 2007,there have been two separate administrations in Palestine,one in the West Bank and the other in the Gaza Strip. The government on the West Bank was generally recognised as the Palestinian Authority Government. On the other hand,the government in the Gaza Strip claimed to be the legitimate government of the Palestinian Authority. Until June 2014,when the Palestinian Unity Government was formed,the government in the West Bank was the Fatah-dominated Palestinian government of 2013. In the Gaza Strip,the government was the Hamas government of 2012. Following two Fatah–Hamas Agreements in 2014,on 25 September 2014 Hamas agreed to let the PA Government resume control over the Gaza Strip and its border crossings with Egypt and Israel,but that agreement had broken down by June 2015,after President Abbas said the PA government was unable to operate in the Gaza Strip.
Atef Ibrahim Mohammad Adwan,also spelled Odwan,Udwan or Edwan,is the Minister of Refugees in the Palestinian Authority,having been named to this position following the Hamas victory in the 2006 Palestinian legislative election,when he was elected from the Northern Gaza District.
The state of human rights in the West Bank and Gaza Strip is determined by Palestinian as well as Israeli policies,which affect Palestinians in the occupied Palestinian territories both directly and indirectly,through their influence over the Palestinian Authority (PA). Based on The Economist Democracy Index this state is classified as an authoritarian regime.
In 2006 the Israel Defense Forces launched Operation "Autumn Clouds" beginning on 1 November 2006,following numerous rocket and mortar attacks on southern Israel,when the Israeli Defense Forces entered the Gaza Strip triggering sporadic fighting near Beit Hanoun. The operation was the first military endeavor undertaken by the Israeli military since Operation "Summer Rains" in the summer of 2006. The operation was launched to stop Palestinian rocket attacks into Israel.
The 2006 shelling of Beit Hanoun by the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) happened on 8 November,when shells hit a row of houses in the Gaza Strip town of Beit Hanoun,killing at least 19 Palestinians and wounding more than 40. The shelling followed the IDF's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in completion of a week-long operation codenamed Operation "Autumn Clouds",which the Israeli government stated had been intended to stop the Qassam rocket attacks on Israeli civilians by Palestinian militants. The Israeli government apologized and attributed the incident to a technical malfunction.
The 2006 Gaza–Israel conflict,known in Israel as Operation Summer Rains,was a series of battles between Palestinian militants and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) during summer 2006,prompted by the capture of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit by Palestinian militants on 25 June 2006. Large-scale conventional warfare occurred in the Gaza Strip,starting on 28 June 2006,which was the first major ground operation in the Gaza Strip since Israel's unilateral disengagement plan was implemented between August and September 2005.
Fathi Ahmad Hamad is a Palestinian politician and member of the Hamas political bureau. He was Interior Minister in the Hamas-administered Gaza Strip from 2009 to 2014.
The 2011–2012 Palestinian protests were a series of protests in the Palestinian National Authority and the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip,staged by various Palestinian groups as part of the wider Arab Spring. The protests were aimed to protest against the Palestinian government,as well as supporting the popular uprisings in Tunisia,Egypt and Syria. The first phase of protests took place during 2011 and the second phase in 2012.
The governance of the Gaza Strip since the Hamas takeover of the Gaza Strip in June 2007 has been carried out by Hamas. The Hamas government in Gaza was led by Ismail Haniyeh from 2007 until February 2017,when Haniyeh was replaced as leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip by Yahya Sinwar. As of November 2023,Yahya Sinwar continues to be the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Due to the ongoing Israel–Hamas war,Hamas lost control of most of the northern part of the Gaza Strip.
Rami Hamdallah is a Palestinian politician and academic. He served as prime minister of the Palestinian National Authority from 2014 to 2019 and president of An-Najah National University in Nablus.
Mohammad Ibrahim Shtayyeh is a Palestinian politician,academic,and economist who served as Prime Minister of the State of Palestine and the Palestinian National Authority from 2019 to 2024. On 26 February 2024,he and his government announced their resignation,remaining in office in a demissionary capacity until a new government was formed on March 31,2024.
The Hamas government of October 2016 is a faction of the Palestinian government based in Gaza and is effectively the third Hamas dominated government in the Gaza Strip since the takeover of Gaza by Hamas. On October 17,2016 Supreme Administrative Committee,which is in the process of building progressive ministries in Gaza,reshuffles active ministries and repositions of 16 ministers and director generals in government institutions. The government in Gaza is composed of ministers,governors-general and other high-level officials linked directly to the Ramallah administration. Initially,it was speculated that the formation of the Hamas government in 2016 was an attempt by Ismail Haniya to return to full Hamas control of Gaza. As part of government reform,it was decided to expand the Ministry of Planning. The United States,Canada,the European Union,Japan and Israel classify Hamas as a state institution in Gaza associated with the PLO government and recognize the PLO government as the legitimate government of Gaza territory. The Hamas government is recognized by the Palestine State Administration in Ramallah.
