Amer Zahr (born 1977) is a Palestinian-American author, comedian and political activist.

Early life

Zahr was born in Jordan to refugee parents of Palestinian heritage originally from Nazareth, and then moved to the United States when he was three years old. [1] [2] [3] His father is Christian and his mother is Muslim, and he was raised with both traditions in the Philadelphia area. [4]

Career

In 2013, Zahr founded the "1001 Laughs Dearborn Comedy Festival," which continues annually. [5] He wrote "Being a Palestinian Makes Me Smile" and made the documentary We’re Not White, which was released in August 2017. [6] [7] [8] [9]

In 2016, Zahr served as a national surrogate for presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. [10] [11]

Personal life

Zahr lives, and is based in, Dearborn, Michigan. [12] He is an adjunct professor at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. [13] Zahr also holds Israeli citizenship through his mother, who was born in Acre, Israel. [14] [15]

He also starred for two seasons, alongside comedian Ramy Youssef, in the Hulu sitcom Ramy as Ramy's cousin Mo, who owns a diner. He stars in the film Black Adam. He also created and stars in a Netflix TV show called Mo. The show is loosely based on his own experience growing up as a Palestinian refugee and was released in August 2022. Amer hosted the 2023 season of Doha Debates' flagship series, filmed before a live audience in Qatar's Education City.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">History of the Middle Eastern people in Metro Detroit</span>

In 2004, Metro Detroit had one of the largest settlements of Middle Eastern people, including Arabs and Chaldo-Assyrians in the United States. As of 2007 about 300,000 people in Southeast Michigan traced their descent from the Middle East. Dearborn's sizeable Arab community consists largely of Lebanese people who immigrated for jobs in the auto industry in the 1920s, and of more recent Yemenis and Iraqis. In 2010 the four Metro Detroit counties had at least 200,000 people of Middle Eastern origin. Bobby Ghosh of TIME said that some estimates gave much larger numbers. From 1990 to 2000 the percentage of people speaking Arabic in the home increased by 106% in Wayne County, 99.5% in Macomb County, and 41% in Oakland County.

Yemeni Americans are Americans of Yemeni ancestry. According to an estimate in 2010, more than 100,000 Yemenis live in the United States.

The LGBT community in Metro Detroit is centered in Ferndale, Michigan, as of 2007. As of 1997, many LGBT people live in Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, and Royal Oak. Model D stated in 2007 that there are populations of gays and lesbians in some Detroit neighborhoods such as East English Village, Indian Village, Lafayette Park, and Woodbridge and that the concentration of gay bars in Detroit is "decentralized".

Al Ameer is a Lebanese restaurant with locations in Dearborn, Michigan and Dearborn Heights, Michigan. In 2016, Al Ameer won a James Beard Foundation Award, making it the first restaurant in the state of Michigan to earn the American Classic distinction. Al Ameer was founded by Khalil Ammar and Zaki Hashem, who continue to operate the restaurant with several members of their families.
