Aminul Islam Chowdhury (born 1921) [1] was a Bangladeshi politician and businessman. He was a Member of Parliament of Pakistan (MNA) before East Pakistan became Bangladesh and represented a region in Comilla. [2] [3]

Early life and career

Chowdhury was the son of Serajul Islam Chowdhury, Zamindar of Alkora. He studied Economics at the University of Calcutta in India. He was involved in many industries such as aluminum, deep sea trawler fishing, seafood export etc. and won international awards for outstanding business performance. He was also the founder and chairman of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce & Industry. Chowdhury created various companies such as Bayview but the most successful were Amin Fish Farms and Industries Limited. Located in Chittagong, the company's factory covers 20,000 square feet (1,900 m2). It has been awarded numerous times for its export performance.

After retirement, he was involved in various organizations such as the Bangladesh Human Rights Commission where he was the chairman for many years.

Personal life

Chowdhury was married to Jahanara Begum Chowdhury and had three daughters, Zakia, Mumtaz and Rebeka.

Comilla Victoria Government College is a college in Comilla, Bangladesh. It is one of the oldest and renowned colleges in Comilla as well as in Chittagong division. The college is located beside of Ranir Dighi on 32 acres of land including its intermediate and honors section.

Chowdhury is a title of honour, usually hereditary, originating from the Indian subcontinent. It is an adaption from Sanskrit. During the Mughal rule, it was a title awarded to eminent people, while during British rule, the term was associated with zamindars and social leaders. The common female equivalent was Chowdhurani. Many landlords under the Permanent Settlement carried this surname. Land reforms after the partition of India abolished the permanent settlement. In modern times, the term is a common South Asian surname for both males and females.

Mohammad Fazlul Azim is a Bangladeshi industrialist, business magnate and former politician. He is the chairman of Azim Group, a leading industrial conglomerate and exporter in Bangladesh with business concerns in Garments, Steel, Engineering, Agro and various other sectors. He last served as an independent member of parliament of the Jatiya Sangsad. Azim was the only independent lawmaker in the parliament during the 9th Jatiya Sangsad. He also served in the parliament from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

Sultan Ahmed Chowdhury was a Bangladesh Nationalist Party politician. He served as deputy Speaker of Bangladesh Parliament.

AKM Fazlul Kabir Chowdhury was a Bangladeshi politician and member as well as Leader of the Opposition in East Pakistan Provincial Assembly.

Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury Babu was a Bangladesh Awami League politician and a former Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Chittagong-12 constituency. He was awarded Independence Award in 2021 posthumously.

Mohammad Khaled was a Bangladeshi politician, academician and journalist who was a Member of Parliament for Chittagong-6 constituency. He was awarded the Swadhinata Puraskar by the Government of Bangladesh in 2019 for his contribution to the war of liberation.
