Anambra State House of Assembly is the Legislative Branch of the Anambra State Government created in 1991 when Anambra State was created. It is a unicameral body with 30 elected members who represent 30 constituencies. As of June 2019, Uchenna Okafor is the Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly. [1]

Composition

The Anambra State House of Assembly has 30 members. These members represent the 30 constituencies that are under the 21 local government areas of the state. [2] The local government areas are divided into three senatorial zones which comprised Anambra Central, Anambra North, and Anambra South. These Senatorial zones comprised 10 constituencies each that have representatives in the State House of Assembly. [3]

Anambra Central Senatorial Zone: Anaocha I, Anaocha II, Awka North, Awka South I, Awka South II, Dunukofia, Idemmili North, Idemmili South, Njikoka I and Njikoka II.

Anambra North Senatorial Zone: Anambra West, Anambra East, Oyi, Onitsha North II,

Onitsha South I, Onitsha South II, Ayamelum, Onitsha North I, Ogbaru I and Ogbaru II.

Anambra South Senatorial Zone: Aguata I, Aguata II, Ihiala I, Ihiala II, Nnewi North,

Nnewi South I, Orumba North, Orumba South, Ekwusigo and Nnewi South II

Defections

The Anambra State House of Assembly has witnessed a series of defections. In September 2021, six lawmakers defected from All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to All Progressives Congress (APC). [4] [5]

In the same vein, 11 members of the House moved from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into the All Progressives Congress (APC). The defectors were five

serving members, four former House of Representatives members, and two Anambra House of Assembly members. They were Douglas Egbuna, Ebuchi Offor, Vincent Oguwelu, Ifeanyichukwu Ibezi, Emeka Anoku, Chris Emeka and Ifeanyi Monah, Ohwudili Ezenwa, Chinwe Nwaebili,.Chuma Nzeribe and Emeka Azubogu. [6]

Its main campus is in Awka, while its other campus is in Nnewi. There are also other campuses of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. These include Agulu in Anaocha local government area and Ifite-Ogwuari in Ayamelum local government area in Anambra State. This makes Nnamdi Azikiwe University to operate in the three Senatorial Districts in Anambra State, Nigeria having Awka campus, in Anambra Central Senatorial District, Nnewi in Anambra South Senatorial District and Ifite-Ogwuari in Anambra North Senatorial District, respectively.

Nigeria has 774 local government areas (LGAs), each administered by a local government council consisting of a chairman, who is the chief executive, and other elected members, who are referred to as councillors. Ekwulobia is an Igbo-speaking town in southeastern Nigeria. It is one of the largest cities in Anambra State after Awka, Onitsha, and Nnewi and their respective conurbations. It is the headquarters of the present Aguata local government and the headquarters of the old Aguata Local Government that comprised the present Aguata local government and Orumba North and South local governments.

Anambra Central senatorial district in Anambra State is one of the three Senatorial Districts in the State. It has seven local government areas. They are Awka North, Awka South, Njikoka, Anaocha, Idemili North, Idemili South and Dunukofia. There are 1,556 polling units (Pus) and 109 registration areas (RAs) as of 2019. INEC office in Amawbia, Awka South LGA is the collation centre. This Senatorial District covers the Anambra State Capital, Awka, and its environs. It also has prominent and notable people.

The 2021 Anambra State gubernatorial election took place on 6 November 2021, to elect the Governor of Anambra State. Incumbent APGA Governor Willie Obiano was term-limited and could not seek a third consecutive term. APGA nominee, former Central Bank Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, retained the office for APGA with a 24% win over PDP nominee, former Transcorp CEO Valentine Ozigbo.

The 2019 Nigerian Senate election in Anambra State was held on February 23, 2019, to elect members of the Nigerian Senate to represent Anambra State. The 2023 Nigerian presidential election in Anambra State was held on 25 February 2023 as part of the nationwide 2023 Nigerian presidential election to elect the president and vice president of Nigeria. Other federal elections, including elections to the House of Representatives and the Senate, will also be held on the same date while state elections will be held two weeks afterward on 11 March.

Dozie Ferdinand Nwankwo is a Nigerian politician who represented Njikoka/ Anaocha and Dunukofia Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives. He is a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). He won the primary election under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for Anambra Central Senatorial District for the 2023 Senatorial election. However, he lost the senatorial seat to Labour Party (LP) candidate.

Somtochukwu Nkemakonam Udeze is a Nigerian lawyer and politician who had served as the speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly since 2023.
