History

Ananda Sastralaya National School Matugama [1] is a school in Sri Lanka. It was established on 22 February 1942 by Dayasena Turnolius Pasqual, the founder of Matugama Ananda Sastralaya. He later became a parliamentarian and also a deputy minister. This school was established due to the prevailing war situation in Colombo City during World War II. At that time schools were closed in Colombo. Kotte Ananda Sastralaya was also closed due to the war situation and it was converted into an army camp. Eleven students from Matugama attended Kotte Ananda Sastralaya. Most of them were from Pasqual families. They had to come back as their school was closed. Daya T. Pasqual was among them. At that time he was a teacher. He decided to start a branch of Kotte Ananda Sastralaya in Matugama. His uncle Brampi Pasqual, Munasinghe, Wijegunawardanea and Dr E. W. Adikaram, principal of Kotte Ananda Sastralaya, helped him to start this school.

In the evening of 22 February 1942 Hon. Minister of Education C.W.W. Kannangara was the chief guest of the opening ceremony at Sri Sudarshanaramaya temple Matugama. Dr E.W.Adikaram also attended the ceremony.

At the beginning there were eleven students and three teachers in the school. Pasqual was also among them. School manager was Brumpy Pasqual.

C. W. W. Kannangara Sri Lankan politician and lawyer

Dr. Cristopher William Wijekoon Kannangara was a Sri Lankan Lawyer and a politician. Rising up the ranks of Sri Lanka's movement for independence in the early part of the 20th century, he moved on to play a pivotal role defending leaders of the independence movement in court and achieving vital legal victories contributing vastly to the cause of independence as a lawyer and orator, soon achieving the Presidency of Ceylon National Congress, the forerunner to Sri Lanka's Parliament UNP. Later, he became the first Minister of Education in the State Council of Ceylon, and was instrumental in introducing extensive reforms to the country's education system that opened up education to children from all levels of society.

Mahatma Gandhis visit to Ceylon

Mahatma Gandhi the 'Father of the Nation of India,' paid a historic visit to Ceylon in 1927. On his first and only visit to the island, he was invited to Chilaw by the famed freedom fighters of Sri Lanka, Charles Edgar Corea and his brother Victor Corea. E. W. Adikaram Sri Lankan activist (1905–1985)

Kalutara Koralalage Edward Winifred Brito Adikaram was an educationalist, writer, social activist and a philosopher in Sri Lanka. In 1931 he obtained an M.A degree from London School of Oriental Studies and in 1933 a PhD on the thesis "Early History of Buddhism in Ceylon". After returning to Sri Lanka he started to teach in Ananda Sastralaya, Kotte and in 1934, he became the principal of the school. He was a prominent nonviolence activist in Sri Lanka.
