Ananya Vajpeyi is an Indian academic and writer. She is Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies. [1] She is the author of the book "Righteous Republic: The Political foundations of Modern India" published by the Harvard University Press. Born in 1972.
Vajpeyi is the daughter of Sahitya Akademi poet Kailash Vajpeyi. [2]
Vajpeyi received her MA at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, [3] M.Phil. from the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, [4] and Ph.D. at the University of Chicago. She has taught at the University of Massachusetts [5] and Columbia University. [6] She is currently a visiting professor at Ashoka University.
Her book "Righteous Republic" won the Crossword Award for Non-Fiction (2013), jointly with "From the Ruins of Empire" by Pankaj Mishra. [7] It also won the Thomas J Wilson Memorial Prize from Harvard University Press [8] and the Tata First Book Award for Non-Fiction (2013). She is the co-editor with Ramin Jahanbegloo of Ashis Nandy: A Life in Dissent (OUP, 2018) [12] and with Volker Kaul of Minorities and Populism: Critical Perspectives from South Asia and Europe (Springer, 2020). [13]

Bhimayana: Incidents in the Life of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar is a graphic biography of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar published in 2011 by Navayana and was hailed by CNN as being among the top five political comic books. It was created by artists Durgabai Vyam, Subhash Vyam and writers Srividya Natarajan and S. Anand. It depicts the experiences of caste discrimination and resistance that Bhimrao Ambedkar recorded in his autobiographical illustrations, later compiled and edited in Babasaheb Ambedkar: Writings and Speeches by Vasant Moon under the title “Waiting for a Visa”. It is one of India's top selling graphic books.

Kailash Vajpeyi was an Indian poet, writer, and lyricist who chiefly wrote Hindi language poems throughout his literary career. He wrote more than 28 books, including one of his publications Hawa Mein Hastakshar which translates to "signature in the air" for which he was awarded a literary honour Sahitya Akademi Award in 2009. The University of Lucknow awarded him Vachaspati title in recognition of his contribution to Hindi literature.
