Appalachia is a socio-economic region located in the central and southern sections of the Appalachian Mountains of the eastern United States. It stretches from the western Catskill Mountains of New York state into Pennsylvania,continuing on through the Blue Ridge Mountains and Great Smoky Mountains into northern Georgia and Alabama. In 2020,the region was home to an estimated 26.1 million people,of whom roughly 80% were white.
Cynthia Rylant is an American author and librarian. She has written more than 100 children's books,including works of fiction,nonfiction,and poetry. Several of her books have won awards,including her novel Missing May,which won the 1993 Newbery Medal,and A Fine White Dust,which was a 1987 Newbery Honor book. Two of her books are Caldecott Honor Books.
The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) is a United States federal–state partnership that works with the people of Appalachia to create opportunities for self-sustaining economic development and improved quality of life. Congress established ARC to bring the region into socioeconomic parity with the rest of the nation.
Appalachian music is the music of the region of Appalachia in the Eastern United States. Traditional Appalachian music is derived from various influences,including the ballads,hymns and fiddle music of the British Isles,the African music and blues of early African Americans,and to a lesser extent the music of Continental Europe.
Louise McNeill,also known as Louise McNeill Pease,was an American poet,essayist,and historian of Appalachia. She began teaching in a one roomed schoolhouse in West Virginia and would eventually move on to teach at other universities. She would eventually become a professor of history and English at West Virginia University where her archives are held today.
The West Virginia &Regional History Center (WVRHC),is the largest archival collection housing documents and manuscripts involving West Virginia and the surrounding central Appalachian region. Because of name changes over the years,it is sometimes referred to as the "West Virginia Collection." The WVRHC is the Special Collections division of the WVU Libraries. According to the University,the Center holds over 36,000 linear feet of manuscripts,100,000 books,100,000 pamphlets,1,200 newspaper titles,over 1 million photographs and prints,5,000 maps,and 40,000 microfilms,as well as oral histories,films and folk music recordings. Through donations,the WVRHC provides access to and preserves information on the history and cultural aspects of West Virginia and the central Appalachian Region.
Denise Giardina is an American novelist. Her book Storming Heaven was a Discovery Selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club and received the 1987 W. D. Weatherford Award for the best published work about the Appalachian South. The Unquiet Earth received an American Book Award and the Lillian Smith Book Award for fiction. Her 1998 novel Saints and Villains was awarded the Boston Book Review fiction prize and was semifinalist for the International Dublin Literary Award. Giardina is an ordained Episcopal Church deacon,a community activist,and a former candidate for governor of West Virginia.
The Encyclopedia of Appalachia is the first encyclopedia dedicated to the region,people,culture,history,and geography of Appalachia. The Region,as defined by the Appalachian Regional Commission,is a 205,000-square-mile area that follows the spine of the Appalachian Mountains from southern New York to northern Mississippi. It includes all of West Virginia and parts of 12 other states:Alabama,Georgia,Kentucky,Maryland,Mississippi,New York,North Carolina,Ohio,Pennsylvania,South Carolina,Tennessee,and Virginia. Forty-two percent of this Region's population is rural,compared with 20 percent of the national population,but the region also includes urban areas,such as Pittsburgh and Chattanooga. The encyclopedia is 1,832 pages long and contains over 2,000 entries. Produced by the Center of Excellence for Appalachian Studies and Services at East Tennessee State University (ETSU),Rudy Abramson and Dr. Jean Haskell,are the two main editors of the encyclopedia. Jill Oxendine served as managing editor. The volume was published in March 2006 by the University of Tennessee Press. It includes a foreword by William Ferris,former chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities,who called the encyclopedia "truly a feast of information about its region. .. a remarkably detailed portrait of a landscape that runs from New York to Mississippi.”The volume also includes an appreciation by Henry Louis Gates Jr.,Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and Director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University,who is a native of West Virginia. Gates wrote that the encyclopedia "lays out for everyone else what we who grew up there have always known. Appalachia is a rich and beautiful land steeped in tradition and open to change. It is home to countless storytellers and stories without end. Both its lushness and its rockiness teach us to make our way in the world,but Appalachia never leaves us."
Ann Pancake is an American fiction writer and essayist. She has published a novel,short stories and essays describing the people and atmosphere of Appalachia,often from the first-person perspective of those living there. While fictional,her short stories contribute to an understanding of poverty in the 20th century,and well as the historical roots of American and rural poverty. Much of Pancake's writing also focuses on the destruction caused by natural resource extraction,particularly in Appalachia,and the lives of the people affected.
West Virginia University Press is a university press and publisher in the state of West Virginia. A part of West Virginia University,the press publishes books and journals with a particular emphasis on Appalachian studies,history,higher education,the social sciences,and interdisciplinary books about energy,environment,and resources. The press also has a small but highly regarded program in fiction and creative nonfiction,including Deesha Philyaw's The Secret Lives of Church Ladies,winner of the 2021 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction,winner of the Story Prize 2020/21,winner of the Los Angeles Times Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction,and a finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction in 2020. John Warner wrote in the Chicago Tribune,"If you are wondering what the odds are of a university press book winning three major awards,being a finalist for a fourth,and going to a series on a premium network,please know that this is the only example." In 2021,another of WVU Press's works of fiction,Jim Lewis's Ghosts of New York,was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. WVU Press also collaborates on digital publications,notably West Virginia History:An Open Access Reader.
Crystal E. Wilkinson is an African-American feminist writer from Kentucky,and proponent of the Affrilachian Poet movement. She is the winner of a 2022 NAACP Image Award,a 2020 winner of the USA Fellow of Creative Writing,and a 2021 O. Henry Prize winner. She teaches at the University of Kentucky. Her work has primarily been in involving the stories of Black women and communities in the Appalachian and rural Southern canon. She was appointed Poet Laureate of Kentucky 2021.
The Appalachian region and its people have historically been stereotyped by observers,with the basic perceptions of Appalachians painting them as backwards,rural,and anti-progressive. These widespread,limiting views of Appalachia and its people began to develop in the post-Civil War;Those who "discovered" Appalachia found it to be a very strange environment,and depicted its "otherness" in their writing. These depictions have persisted and are still present in common understandings of Appalachia today,with a particular increase of stereotypical imagery during the late 1950s and early 1960s in sitcoms. Common Appalachian stereotypes include those concerning economics,appearance,and the caricature of the "hillbilly."
Dr. Mildred Mitchell-Bateman,M.D. was an American physician and medical administrator. She was West Virginia's mental health commissioner in 1962,and was the first woman and first African-American to hold the position.
Fannie Cobb Carter was an American educator,humanitarian,and activist for school integration in the United States.
Memphis Tennessee Garrison was an activist for African Americans and young women during the Jim Crow Era in rural West Virginia. Garrison was a McDowell County teacher and community mediator,famous for organizing West Virginia's third chapter of the Gary Branch of the NAACP in 1921. Additionally,from 1931 to 1946,Garrison was the community mediator for U.S. Steel Gary Mines. Some of Garrison's other notable achievements range from establishing the Gary Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People,to organizing Girl Scout troops for African American girls,to creating a breakfast program from impoverished students during the Great Depression and finally to creating the "Negro Artist Series."
Affrilachia is a term that focuses on the cultural contributions of African-American artists,writers,and musicians in the Appalachian region of the United States. The term "Affrilachia" is attributed to Kentucky-based writer Frank X Walker,who began using it in the 1990s as a way to negate the stereotype of Appalachian culture,which portrays Appalachians as predominantly white and living in small mountain communities. Walker could be said to have made this word global. The term Affrilachian stands for an African American who is a native or resident in the Appalachian region. Affrilachia is also the title of Walker's 2000 book of poetry,published by Old Cove Press.
The city of Baltimore,Maryland includes a significant Appalachian population. The Appalachian community has historically been centered in the neighborhoods of Hampden,Pigtown,Remington,Woodberry,Lower Charles Village,Highlandtown,and Druid Hill Park,as well as the Baltimore inner suburbs of Dundalk,Essex,and Middle River. The culture of Baltimore has been profoundly influenced by Appalachian culture,dialect,folk traditions,and music. People of Appalachian heritage may be of any race or religion. Most Appalachian people in Baltimore are white or African-American,though some are Native American or from other ethnic backgrounds. White Appalachian people in Baltimore are typically descendants of early English,Irish,Scottish,Scotch-Irish,and Welsh settlers. A migration of White Southerners from Appalachia occurred from the 1920s to the 1960s,alongside a large-scale migration of African-Americans from the Deep South and migration of Native Americans from the Southeast such as the Lumbee and the Cherokee. These out-migrations caused the heritage of Baltimore to be deeply influenced by Appalachian and Southern cultures.
The Metro Detroit region of Michigan is home to a significant Appalachian population,one of the largest populations of Urban Appalachians in the United States. The most common state of origin for Appalachian people in Detroit is Kentucky,while many others came from Tennessee,West Virginia,Virginia,Ohio,and elsewhere in the Appalachia region. The Appalachian population has historically been centered in the Detroit neighborhoods of Brightmoor,Springwells,Corktown and North Corktown,as well as the Detroit suburbs of Hazel Park,Ypsilanti,Taylor,and Warren. Beginning after World War I,Appalachian people moved to Detroit in large numbers seeking jobs. Between 1940 and 1970,approximately 3.2 million Appalachian and Southern migrants settled in the Midwest,particularly in large cities such as Detroit and Chicago. This massive influx of rural Appalachian people into Northern and Midwestern cities has been called the "Hillbilly Highway". The culture of Metro Detroit has been significantly influenced by the culture,music,and politics of Appalachia. The majority of people of Appalachian heritage in Metro Detroit are Christian and either white or black,though Appalachian people can be of any race,ethnicity,or religion.
Queer Appalachia began as a zine founded by Gina Manone for the Appalachian region and the South at large,and transitioned into a larger project allegedly focusing collaboratively on mutual aid. Established in 2016 after the deaths of Bryn Kelly and Amanda Arkansassy Harris,Queer Appalachia distributes its art,writing,and other work through an Instagram account and a publication called Electric Dirt. According to the magazine Esquire,the collective "seeks to unify the queer people of Appalachia by capturing the variety of races,abilities,genders,religions,and addiction statuses of an area that is largely believed to be straight and white".
Barbara Ellen Smith is an American author,activist,and educator. She is known for her involvement and writing about social justice in Appalachia,particularly the Black Lung Movement and advocacy for coal miners. Smith sustains her career of more than 40 years by continuing to make contributions in the intersecting disciplines of women's and gender studies,sociology,geography,and Appalachian studies as a professor and author.
