The Andhra Pradesh Library Association was established on 10 April 1914. It is the oldest state library association in India. [1] The association is headquartered at Vijayawada. The association emerged with a noble mission of spreading literacy, knowledge, and awareness among the public. Since its inception, the association has been functioning with the sole aim of taking library movement to the public. [2]
Andhra Library Movement and Andhra Library Association have had their origin with organizing Andhra Library Congress on 10 April 1914. Iyyanki Venkataramanaiah and Suri Venkata Narasimha Sastri initiated the formation of Association of Libraries of Andhra Area (Andhra Pradesha Grantha Bhandagara Sangham), which was later renamed as - Library Association of Andhra Area (Andhra Desa Granthalaya Sangham) and it became Andhra Pradesh Library Association (Andhra Pradesh Granthalaya Sangham) after the formation of Andhra Pradesh State. The Ramamohana Public Library, Vijayawada (formerly: Bezwada), organized "All India Conference of Library Organizers" and on the same day, the first Andhra Desa Library Congress was organized under the Chairmanship of Chilakamarti Lakshmi Narasimha Pantulu. His motivational message on this occasion was described as ‘Granthalaya Veda’ (Library Anthem) by Iyyanki Venkataramanaiah.
As a result of this conference, the Andhra Pradesha Grantha Bhandagara Sangham came into existence. At this congress, Dewan Bahadur Mocharla Ramachandra Rao Pantulu as the first President and Iyyanki Venkataramanaiah and Nalam Krishna Rao as first Secretaries of the association were elected. [3]

APLA is involved in printing, publishing books, journals in regional language Telugu, organising the teaching & training programs and furnishing information for the smooth functioning of various libraries.
The Andhra Pradesh Library Association has celebrated its Golden Jubilee for two days on May 26 and 27, 1964 at Vijayawada in Sarvottama Bhavanamu. On the first day, the program started with Saraswati Pooja at Ramamohana Library. Ayyanki Venkata Ramanaiah lit Jyothi and it was presented to the Committee Secretary Chennuppati SeshagiriRao. The Jyoti was taken up to Sarvottama Bhavan in a grand celebration of the procession and presented to the Association Secretary Paturi Nagabhushanam. Later on, a Conference of poets was conducted under the chairmanship of Viswanatha Satyanarayana. Several Telugu poets participated in this program including the secretary of the Association Paturi Nagabhushanam. In the evening, Acharya Rayaprolu Subbarao presided over the session of the Celebrations. The then state Law minister PV Narasimha Rao inaugurated the Celebrations. Then the community founders Ayyanki Venkata Ramanaiah and Komma Sitaramaiah were felicitated. On the second day, the conference papers presentation sessions were organized by the members of the association. It was chaired by Kodati Narayana Rao and Goparaju Ramachandra Rao. It was followed by a meeting of library workers and also a public meeting. Andhra Prabha editor Neelamraju Venkataseshaiah chaired the meeting, while Andhra Jyoti editor Narla Venkateswara Rao inaugurated. The Andhra Pradesh State Industrial Minister M.S.Laxminarasaya unveiled the publications of Golden Jubilee Proceedings of the Association - "Grandhaalaya Pragati" 1,3 volumes. [7]
The Association conducted 34th Andhra Pradesh Library Association Conference at "Orugallu" on 1981 March 22-21. The Diamond Jubilee was celebrated on the same occasion at the conference venue on March 22, 1981. More than 1000 fans and library activists from all over the state participated in the event. The dignitaries of the day include P.V.Narasimha Rao, External Affairs Minister, Government of India, T.Hayagrivachari, Technical Education Minister, Government of Andhra Pradesh, Majji Tulasidas, Small Industries Minister, Government of Andhra Pradesh and Kaloji Narayana Rao, the poet laureate of the Association. The well-known literary scholar Marupuru Kodandarami Reddy acted as the chairman. P.V.Narasimha Rao, External Affairs Minister, Government of India, rendered the presidential address. A number of writers, journalists, and other speakers have discussed issues in their speeches and provided suggestions. [7]
The Andhra Pradesh Library Association Platinum Jubilee Celebrations were held at Vijayawada, Sarvottama Bhavanamu. The Association President Kodati Narayana Rao presided over the event. R.Krishna Murty, the Director of Andhra Pradesh Public Libraries, inaugurated the celebrations and M. V. Venkata Reddy, the Director of Andhra Pradesh Adult Literacy Programme unveiled the Golden Jubilee issue, the 50th volume of the association’s journal – “Granthalaya Sarvaswam.” The leader of the library movement, Vavilala Gopalakrishnayya, the Mayor of Vijayawada Jandhalaya Shankar and Member of Parliament Vadde Shobhanadeeswara Rao graced the stage. Khammam is the city in Khammam district of the Indian state of Telangana. It is the fourth largest city in the state. It is the headquarters of the Khammam district and Khammam mandal also. It is located about 193 kilometres (120 mi) east of the state capital, Hyderabad, 61 kilometres (38 mi) from Suryapet, 120 kilometres (75 mi) from Warangal and also it is located about 121 kilometres (75 mi) North of the Andhra Pradesh state capital, Amaravathi. The river Munneru flows on the western side of the city. As of 2011 census of India, Khammam urban agglomeration has a population of 313,504. However, on 19 October 2012, the civic body of Khammam was upgraded to a municipal corporation. Post- upgradation to corporation, the population of Khammam was approximated to be 3,07,000. During 2014-2023 under BRS regime Khammam got a major changeover, roads expansion, Medical College, Engineering College, ITHub.
Telugu theatre is Indian theatre in the Telugu language, based in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Gurajada Apparao wrote the play, Kanyasulkam in 1892, which is often considered the greatest play in the Telugu language. C. Pullaiah is cited as the father of Telugu theatre movement.
The Ramineni Foundation was founded in 1995 by the children of the late Ramineni Ayyanna Choudary in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA for the purpose of protecting and promoting the monumental heritage of Indian culture and the ideals of Hinduism. In addition, the primary mission of the foundation is to facilitate the valiant, relentless and altruistic efforts of all those high priests drawn from a cross-spectrum of fields in arts, science and humanities.

Andhra Mahasabha was a people's organisation in the erstwhile Hyderabad state of India. It was an association started by Telugu people of Telangana region against Nizam rule. The people of Telangana formed the Andhra Mahasabha as they could not tolerate the injustice being done to the Telugu language and Telugu culture. In the late 1920s, under the leadership of Madapati Hanumantha Rao, the Telugu people united and formed a union and organized 13 Andhra Mahasabhas from 1930 to 1945. The activities of the Andhra Mahasabha in the Telangana region created awareness among the people against the Nizam and led to the armed struggle in Telangana. Chief among the people who led the Andhra Mahasabha were: Madapati Hanumantha Rao, Ravi Narayana Reddy, Suravaram Prathapareddy, Baddam Ella Reddy, Burgula Ramakrishna Rao, Dasarathi Krishnamacharya, Susarla Srirama Narasimham, Pulijala Venkatarangarao, Allampalli Venkatarama Rao, Kaloji Narayana Rao, Konda Venkata Rangareddy, Vattikota Alvaraswami, Potlapalli. Rama Rao, Arutla Ramachandra Reddy, and many more.
International Telugu Institute was established by the Government of Andhra Pradesh in 1975 in acceptance of a resolution unanimously adopted by the delegates to the first World Telugu Conference held at Hyderabad. It was later merged with the Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University in 1985 and renamed as the International Telugu Centre.
Mandali Venkata Krishna Rao was an Indian politician, social worker, and Gandhian from Andhra Pradesh, known for his contributions to Telugu language, culture, and rural development. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) from Machilipatnam (1957–1962) and as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Avanigadda (1972–1985), holding various ministerial portfolios in Andhra Pradesh cabinet, including Social Welfare, Fisheries, Education, and Cultural Affairs.
Sri Krishna Devaraya Bhasha Nilayam earlier known as Sri Krishna Devaraya Andhra Bhasha Nilayam is one of the oldest non-Government Library in Telangana.
Kalyanam Raghuramaiah (1901–1975), popularly known as Eelapata Raghuramaiah, was an Indian actor, and thespian known for his works in Telugu cinema, and Telugu theatre. A recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, and the Padmashri, He was known for the roles of Krishna or Dushyantha, Bhavanisankar, Narada etc. He performed those roles for about 60 years. He indulged in elaborate raga alapana, based on different ragas while rendering padyams.

Gadicherla Harisarvottama Rao was a freedom fighter from Andhra during the Indian independence movement. He was inspired by the ideologies of Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Bipin Chandra Pal and joined the freedom movement at a very young age. He is the person who named the region as Rayalaseema when everybody taunted the region as Ceded because Nizam ceded the region to the British.
Mandali Buddha Prasad is an Indian politician and former Deputy Speaker of Andhra Pradesh, India. He is a staunch follower of Gandhian principles and a leader with Service motto and national outlook. Especially, he is known for his love and affection for Telugu language and Culture and for his unstinted efforts for their development and also for the welfare of Telugu people living all over the world.
Krishna Patrika is an Indian Telugu-language newspaper. It was founded in 1902 by Konda Venkatappayya and Dasu Narayana Rao as a weekly magazine. Mutnuri Krishna Rao was the editor of the publication from 1907 until his death in 1945.
Duggirala Gopalakrishnayya, was an Indian freedom fighter and member of the Indian National Congress from the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Known by his title of Andhra Ratna (Telugu: ఆంధ్ర రత్న, translates to "Jewel of Andhra" or "Gem of Andhra." Sri Duggirala Gopalakrishnayya, Gopalakrishnayya was the first Andhra leader to become secretary of the All India Congress Committee. Sri Duggirala Gopalakrishnayya, was a very captivating poet, speaker, songwriter, philosopher, singer and an extraordinary revolutionary with a philosophy of non-violence. Sri Nadimpalli Venkata Lakshmi Narasimha Rao worked in tandem with Sri Duggirala Gopalakrishnayya. For his exemplary work and sacrifices for freedom movement in Andhra, he was fondly conferred the name 'Andhra Ratna'
Digavalli Venkata Siva Rao, or Digavalli Śivarāvu, was a lawyer, historian and Telugu writer from Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. He is the author of forty-two books and some 300 articles written between 1924 and 1987. Some of his works are available in the Indian Digital Library.
Ayyadevara Kaleswara Rao was an Indian freedom fighter and the first Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Andhra Pradesh. He was born in Nandigama village, Krishna district, then in Madras Presidency, British India and now a part of the state of Andhra Pradesh. The Kaleswara Rao market in Vijayawada was named in his honour.
Saraswata Niketanam Library is located in Vetapalem, Andhra Pradesh, India. It is one of the oldest libraries in India, and has on display a rare collection of Palm leaf manuscripts and paper written in Hindi, Telugu, Sanskrit and a few other languages indigenous to India. The collection comprises well over 90,000 volumes, with a majority of these on display. The library has a complete catalogue of holdings, which is being made available online. Some rare holdings can be viewed on site by prior arrangement.
Paturi Nagabhushanam was described as the doyen of the Andhra Library Movement from Andhra Pradesh, India. Paturi was associated with the national independence movement and an ardent follower of Gandhiji. His contributions are noteworthy - in spreading library movement in the state of Andhra Pradesh among the public, strengthening Andhra Pradesh Library Association propagating adult literacy, the establishment of library school for imparting training to library workers and giving library education under State government certification and publishing books, periodicals, LIS textbooks. He is the founder of Sarvottama Granthalayam in Vijayawada.
Grandhalaya Sarvaswam is a Telugu periodical related to the library science and Library and information science. The Andhra Pradesh Library Association in India has been publishing this periodical since the year 1915 for the development of the library movement. It is the oldest regional language periodical in the country.
The Boat Libraries were operated under the auspices of the Andhra Pradesh Library Association, Vijayawada. They are mobile libraries or bookmobiles as per the functionality, but boats were used as a conveyance for transporting books to the boat travellers/users.
